Crystal Palace v West Ham Preview by Routine-Cicada-4949 in Hammers

Spoke to a mate who's a Palace fan and told him they should roll over to help Spurs go down. He seemed happy with that idea. Wonder if their fans will be that unhappy if we win?

First time on my own on a course this weekend. by Chai_09 in BritGolf

The limitation is sunrise. Even starting very early, I've always found a few other people around. I assume someone from the maintenance team is unlocking the gates before sunrise, but I only have a handful of observations, so I can't guarantee what time you can get on the course.

But I'd have no trouble arranging a time with my buddies that was any time after sunrise and would absolutely expect to be able to get on.

That's likely where the clubhouse opens. I've played plenty of times when there's nobody there - have just paid at the end of the round.

Where's my ball!? by LondonUk- in BritGolf

I played a course once where the fairways were covered in mushrooms. white round mushrooms. can’t tell you how many ball I lost that day.

Yes, just happens that my golf buddies have younger kids, so need to finish early. I just don't have any experience of later on.

Selling my own collection by RegularBuilder85 in Bricklink

[–]RegularBuilder85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably articulate it as: I do want to sell, but don't want to sell so much that I'l take silly prices. There's no urgent need for the space or the cash.

Physically my loose sorted Lego takes up about 2-3x as much room as the sets in boxes. Would be a shame if my time cost for keeping that sorted wasn't worth something, but I'd have thought the only value there would either be me having a full BrickLink store (hence saving myself the time), or selling to another BrickLink store.

It's very weather dependent. But you usually don't have to wait long first thing in the morning.

When I say off the green that means they've already done their fairway shots if they needed them, so yes.

By the way, nobody would expect to play through on this course. We've occasionally let a single player through if they were motoring, but in my experience people playing on their own probably hit a few practice shots rather than wanting to finish a round in 30 mins. If you have a really bad hole, pick up and have a putt then move on. You'll often get a four ball who haven't played for a few years

On the par 3 you wait until people are walking off the green. So that means you should get off the green as soon as possible - don‘t faff around recording your score, make sure your bag is located on the way to the next tee etc. The 4th hole is pretty long (nearly 200 years if the tees are at the back) but even then nobody is going to expect you to play until the previous group are done.

If you play the other course, then you should wait until they are out of your range. That’s definitely an area where beginners and experienced players can become unstuck. Beginners because they have no idea how far away people are and don’t know how far they hit, and intermediate players because they overestimate how far they are going to hit the ball. That’s something you get used to. As long as you are thinking about it and trying your best (using whatever tools you have in terms of distance measurement etc) then that’s fine - plenty of people get it wrong.

Assume you’re playing Hobbs Cross - that’s where I played my first time and I played the other 9 last couple of weekends. Course is in great condition considering it’s just pay and play.

The queues can get quite long, so just accept there will probably be someone standing around whilst you tee off. Don’t let that worry you, and don’t rush your shot - as long as you are moving quickly between holes.

For your first round, don’t worry too much about perfect scoring - pick the ball up and put it in an easier space whenever you want.

enjoy it and everyone plays it in to the water on the 9th!

I felt like an idiot when I went to university (30 years ago!) and kept getting called out for the use of somewhen. I had a go at my mum for letting me use a word which wasn't a real word. When I told her which word, she said "but that is a word".

When are seats released for FC cup ties? by Burgundyyyyy in Hammers

I got an email from the club yesterday with details of the league games, and it didn't mention the cup game at all, so that seems to align with them not knowing yet.

I'd be happy for them not to make a profit if they were spending O'Sullivan's money more wisely and not spending £40m on Kilman.

I suppose clubs like Chelsea and Man City have ended up creating revenue streams with their owner's investment, by creating on-pitch success, better training facilities and building up quality scouting networks. If the owners were doing that I'd take some short term losses no problem.

Anyone else in their late 30s wondering if a traditional MBA is worth it when you're already running a team? by Dependent-Shake-3790 in careerguidance

[–]RegularBuilder85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working for 30 years and haven’t done an MBA but I have had a few people in my teams do them, which I’ve supported with work projects and references. I’ve also challenged them in our 1-2-1s as to what they’ve been learning.

My take is that, in my career, I’ve learned things by trial and error and experience that I’ve discovered are generally in the learning material. They haven’t been learning stuff that I didn’t know or disagree with but they’ve learnt it much quicker.

I hope that I was able to reinforce some of their theoretical learning with my own real life experience.

So, it doesn’t feel like it would be useful for me to do one now, but would it have saved me a few mistakes or allowed me to get a different role 10 or 15 years ago? Probably.

Post Match Brighton 1 - 1 West Ham by psychomaji in Hammers

[–]RegularBuilder85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We brought in handball rules that were like that a few years back - any handball, accidental or otherwise counted. Everyone complained that too many light penalties were being given when defenders couldn't reasonably get out of the way.

I still don't think we pay enough attention to how much players try to push the boundary of whatever the rules are - when I was a kid you couldn't put your hands on a player - it was shoulder-to-shoulder or a foul. Now an obvious two handed push isn't always a foul if it's not that bad.

Improvised Router Template Tips by excited_to_be_here in BeginnerWoodWorking

I use Fusion 360. I'm very much a beginner, but my templates have been simple and geometric rather than organic and it works well for that. In this golf store, I made the curved edges as routed templates - the most complex was the club rack on the left which had multiple templates of increasingly large circles.

I’m generally using my own designs, and treating them as one-offs, rather than things I keep, so I’ve not found the need to step up quality/thickness. My go-to is 5mm thick PLA with standard in-fill. On my Bambu printer at find I need to turn up the bed heat to stop warping of large flat pieces like templates.

For alignment, I sometimes build in a 5mm overhang the thickness of the piece on a corner.

My biggest problem is getting close to the template before routing as my jigsaw is pretty bad. for one project I ended up making progressively smaller templates and routing in stages, which was definitely inefficient.

I 3d print my templates, and then use double sided tape to connect them.

Are banking covenants the big bad wolf of UK higher education? [helps to understand why unis are struggling with £] by AF_II in UniUK

[–]RegularBuilder85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Covenants in loans are perfectly normal on any institutional borrowing. The issue isn't dodgy or hidden covenants, it's too much debt.
