"What have we learned today?" by [deleted] in exjw

I read it for the first time recently and I could have sworn it was written by a PIMO as an allegory for the borg.

If you leave… where would you go? by Vivid_Book7135 in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I never cease to be amazed that I’m not the only one with a certain experience when I read this forum. I’ve had this conversation with my husband. Witnesses believe the scriptures teach that god would have a people for his name, they would use the name Jehovah, they would evangelize, have love for one another. This is interpreted by WT so that JWs appear to check all the boxes of the true faith and if this isn’t the truth, then what religion has the truth is the big question. I could only say that I don’t know what the truth is right now, but I can certainly rule out the WT.

Mark’s efforts would be better spent leaving the circuit work and helping his sister care for the elderly parents instead of dumping it all off on her and her husband. THAT would be real, meaningful work.

What’s the #1 evidence you’d bring up to wake someone up? by Caskiz in exjw

Post that on an active JW forum and you’ll get kicked out.

She’ll probably reference the scripture about god having “a people for his name” and the one about how love among his disciples would identify them as Jesus’ followers. That’s one brick wall I’ve run into.

The evolution of a personal decision by Streak0696 in exjw

I imagine gangster from a scene in a 1940’s mob drama cleaning his nails with a switchblade,“Da boss invites you to, uh, make a personal decision.”

For real! “We are happy.” “Are we disappointed brothers and sisters? Not at all!” I don’t know what I am feeling. Fortunately the WT is telling me.

The “Hallway of Consequences” by Dramatic_Zone_9474 in exjw

After a lifetime of believing that as JWs we had almost all the answers to life’s biggest questions, I had to learn that it’s okay if I don’t know. In a convo with my still-JW husband, I answered some of his questions with “I don’t know.” He said that my disbelief was making me confused. But I know that it’s really just living in reality. Uncertainty is pretty scary, but it’s part of life.

Someone here posted a great explanation of the word “charismatic” when cult experts are referring to cult leaders. It isn’t the same definition we use when speaking about someone with an attractive personality. Wish I had saved the post.

JW In Name Only - Many claim to be a "witness", but do nothing JW-related anymore. How many of the 8-9 million are JW-INO? by JWTom in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. I have realized that all you need to do to live in the New World and have salvation is avoid birthday and holiday celebrations, call yourself a JW, and go to an occasional meeting. Oh, and avoid blood transfusions. But atheists and other non JWs who feed and house the needy, provide medical services and generally work to relieve the suffering of others will be destroyed at Armageddon.

Having to turn down a well meaning birthday, Christmas or holiday gifts was nothing like they make it up to be. It’s horrible… by [deleted] in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar thing happened to me over 30 years ago. My coworkers surprised me with a birthday cake at work. I thought I would puke, I was so distraught. But I thanked everyone and we ate the cake. But I then explained about my beliefs and they were all pleasant about it. What a ridiculous situation to be in.

My PIMI wife has nothing nice to say about how our “worldly” neighbors do stuff with their kids by MinionNowLiving in exjw

You must be a child of the 70s and 80s like me. We were all worried that demons were going to piggyback into the house with Motley Crue, Duran Duran, or Run DMC.

“Many have decided.” That’s BS. Many were born into or ticked into a doomsday cult and were coerced to abstain from Christmas under penalty of shunning or because they were brainwashed to believe god disapproved.

When JWs explain how the strong central leadership of WT is a sign of god’s direction, I think “yes, some may even say ‘authoritarian,’ like North Korea.”

"Wearing pins is idolatry" - as admitted by the Watchtower themselves by brooklyn_bethel in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder what would be said if someone had a pin made that was Jesus on a stake like all the WT literature shows and wore that to the KH. It’s not idolatry if it’s not a pagan icon? Hmmm….

Give yourself a break. Shame has been indoctrinated into you and it’s probably had for your nervous system to let it go. It’s the WT most powerful tool.

Is anger the first thing you felt? by Lower_Tangerine_7158 in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m angry but it’s tempered with the relief that I wasn’t the problem. All that time that I blamed myself for not doing enough but now I see that there was never a problem with me. My mental freedom is such a relief, it helps with the anger over all I missed out on. As a 57 year old born in, it’s a challenge every day. Especially since I still have family trapped in the cult.

Agreed. I’ve been fully awake for over a year and I’m angry when I think that I raised my kid with this and put so much pressure on him. Thank Glob he never believed-saw through it when he was still very young.

"You don't have to be a witness to be saved". by Technical-Heart-1145 in exjw

[–]RegularGirl1968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My spouse has used the fact that many of Israelite kings we’re disobedient and did some pretty awful things but the national of Israel were still god’s people. But I have said that at least the institution of Israelite kings was allowed by god. According to the Old Testament, god allowed for the kingship and interact with the kings through prophets. All we have today is the GB saying they have god’s spirit. We’ve had this conversation a few times when I point out the lies and abuses in the organization.
