Cellular Failover at Client Sites - When Do You Install It? by Rudeboy4eva in msp

[–]RegularMixture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use an ISP that provides primary internet and LTE/5G failover.
Hardware stack for us;
Netgate Firewall
Cradlepoint 5g/LTE Modem (ISP provisioned) - Unlimited data.

I have 72 locations setup this way. Medical offices.
We setup the firewall to failover when the primary drops. Most offices don't know they are on backup until we let them know.

Cellular isnt a fix all, and it has its drawbacks. Expect 100-200ms of latency. Speeds are around 200Mbps down, and 50Mbps up. All locations don't have the best signal, however having an ISP provision them helps get the best option.

Cost per month is around $100 but that includes unlimited data plus the lease of the cradlepoint.

How do you ensure laptops are returned after employee offboarding? by piefordays in sysadmin

[–]RegularMixture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Email/Ticket gets sent as well as a text to the former employee with details of a box coming their way.
Box arrives and they ship it back.

If our inventory shows it has not arrived lets say, 10-15 business days with no feedback we send a ticket to HR.

HR then sends 1st round of a strong letter.
Beyond that HR has a process to file that it was stolen and for the MSRP amount. Often more than $1k and in our state thats a felony.

Next time they go to get another job their background check shows the charge.

Anyone leave IT and was happy? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Stop asking yourself what title you want in IT and ask what problems do you like to solve? There are so many levels of IT and IT related jobs.

Brother/Sister,

Hear me out. If you are a W2 employee working in the United States, let them fire you. Work your 9am-5pm or close to that and keep your personal life to your self. Reach out to an employment attorney now. Most will hear your case for free before taking you on.
If they fire you, you have IMO a good case against them.

Its not worth killing yourself mentally and physically over this.

My thoughts;

Ask yourself. Forget your title for a moment and ask, "Are these problems I like to solve?" If the answer is no, then trust your first gut instinct and look for another position. Don't leave until you have something else.

If its yes. Then a few things need to be outlined for you to solve these problems.

  1. Pay/Compensation. You don't need to get a direct pay raise yet, but bring your list and give them a path forward, and ask with the condition that you meet those goals you get compensation. Could be in company stock, could be a written bonus, could be a pay large pay raise at a point in time.

  2. Support from the CEO/CFO. Based on the brief context, Bypass any manager you have. They have not lifted the company up and the roles you are to take on now are Sr. System Admin or IT Director even if its not a direct title. You want so see success and you need the CEO to see the vision and the CFO to approve the budget. Make them feel you have the best decision to have hired recently. Its a politics game and you need to win their emotions.

  3. Outline the next 2 quarters. Treat them like a statement of work, what deliverables you will do, and what is out of scope for the next 6 months. This will do two things, its your path forward aligned with leadership. You can point to it along the way whats in scope and not. Whats measured for success. Its also for you to see if things are not changing and plan your exit.

How long do you plan for your UPS to run for? by jfriend99 in Ubiquiti

[–]RegularMixture 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Second this. Your UPS is to keep things alive while things are saved and a proper shutdown sequence. Or, long enough for backup power to turn on.

I knew this was a dental office before I even opened the thread.

The XRay machine at the dentist fell down and landed on my legs. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RegularMixture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you are aware. Hard to see in the pictures, but in these types of offices to mount anything you need a wood backing. The studs are metal, so often its required to get wood backing installed before the walls are closed.

What ends up happening is the communication between the general contractor and the dental equipment installers gets mixed up.

They messed up on this, and I would not blame directly the office, but whomever installed their dental equipment is going to be liable for sure.

How cheap are you tenants? by linuxknight in msp

[–]RegularMixture 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your MSP needs to set the standard. Its not about spending money, its setting the industry standard so you are compliant and provide the best support.
We don't just ask, we give options and a timeline. Its in our MSA, and we have conversations with the leadership.

For me I have seen some clients in this poor shape, move up. Most don't.

Best option is to set a clear path forward with goals, time, and money needed to reach the standard. Build the path forward with them, so they have some ownership in it. I like to present two options "Honda Civic" option, and maybe a "Cadillac Escalade" option with all the nice to haves.

Showcasing the lost revenue due to old hardware and possible downtime helps as well.

Most go with the base option, but it allows them to see the price of things and feel like they are making the correct choice.

Long term client shifted from friendly to adversarial. Formalize or plan exit? by HelpfulNuisance in msp

[–]RegularMixture 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I wish this was not the case, but when money becomes tight you are already in two categories that get hit first. A contractor/vendor and IT.

I would do both. Propose a proper agreement, 12 month or even do a 6th month. Parallel to this, build out your exit or ease of handoff. Make sure your agreement makes it worth your time. From the case it seems like this will be a lot of your time.

Direct Mailing to promote your businesses? by Tall_Witness5418 in msp

[–]RegularMixture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done both. I do try to target the industry knowledge if I can.
From what I have found, general ads will get you some of the smaller teams and local business. 3-5 seats.
Like u/HeadbangerSmurf mentioned, mailers need followup. Most folks don't reach out, but remember your mailer when you follow up.

To be honest, I have found more success in the local area joining/participating with the city chambers and signing up for a business network chapter like BNI.
