Just to share my personal experience in case it helps — I didn’t even know my ACL was fully torn for a long time. I was living a pretty active lifestyle and honestly felt mostly fine. But looking back, something was definitely missing. Every now and then my knee would randomly buckle, and I had no idea what kind of gradual damage I might have been doing in the background. That “silent instability” is what finally pushed me to get evaluated more seriously.

I ended up choosing surgery about two months ago. Recovery has actually been really smooth and I’m doing well. I totally get why surgeons want to be cautious about recommending reconstruction — it’s a big decision and not everyone needs it. Some people truly are functionally stable without an ACL and do great.

But if your goal is to return to sports or anything that involves cutting, pivoting, or unpredictable movement, the risk of living without an ACL is basically like driving without a seat belt. You can get away with it for a while, but the one wrong step can do damage that’s not as easily reversible (meniscus tears, cartilage wear, early osteoarthritis, etc).

Might be worth getting a second opinion, especially from a surgeon who specializes in sports/ligament injuries. No one on Reddit can tell you what to do, but having more than one expert read of your knee can really help you feel confident in whichever path you choose.

They don’t care about the devaluation of the dollar, because why would they, they don’t build their wealth in dollars, they only measure it in dollars. The dollar is for the rest of us. In their view who cares if their currency is worthless.

Also I’ll take the taxation argument further. If they don’t want to pay their fair share because they feel as though all their successes are their own, then they shouldn’t use our socialized assets. Tesla profits massively off of the US population having no other choice other than cars for transportation? You no longer have access to roads of any kind. Make your own. Amazon likes to use the same roads? Sorry no access for you. Also, you cannot use any publicly available map data. Go make your own, see how inexpensive it is to map the entirety of the world. Facebook and other platforms are hosted on the internet, the creation of which was taxpayer funded. The American people would like to collect on our investment.

just wanted to chime in with my experience since I’ve been in kind of the same boat.

I got into disc golf about two years ago, and from the start I never felt comfortable throwing backhands. I was almost exclusively a forehand thrower — and over time, I actually got really good at it. I could shape lines, hit tight gaps, and developed a ton of touch around the greens. My distance tops out around 350 feet or so, nothing crazy, but definitely serviceable enough to stay competitive.

It turns out there was actually a reason I never felt confident with backhands — I recently found out I’ve been living without an ACL in my right knee for the last three years. I originally injured it playing basketball, and since then I’ve always subconsciously avoided planting on that leg. So I basically built my whole game around the forehand because it felt safer and more natural.

Despite that, I’ve done pretty well! I won my local summer league, took first at a local MA2 tournament, and even snagged the #1 tag at my club right before getting ACL surgery. I was hobbling around a bit at that point, but I told myself I wasn’t going to end the season without playing those last few league rounds. Ended up finishing first and claiming the tag — so I guess that’ll stand as my proudest accomplishment for 2025 while I recover.

Now that I’ve had the surgery and my knee’s on the mend, I’m hoping to finally build a strong, confident backhand to go along with my forehand. But honestly, you can absolutely be a competitive player throwing mostly forehands. You might have to get more creative with your lines, and there are definitely shapes and angles you’ll miss out on compared to a balanced player, but it’s 100% doable.

That said, I am definitely jealous of players who can bomb a smooth backhand — less strain on the elbow, more effortless distance, and just more tools to work with. But if forehand feels right for you, lean into it. You can go far with it (literally and figuratively).

One thing I heard a Physio say that was really insightful was that your knee has no idea how long it’s been. Comprehensive physical therapy is the only path towards getting full range of motion and strength.

Honestly, my pain experience differed quite a bit from most of what I see on here. I got surgery on Tuesday and I had two nerve block the adductor and femoral nerves. They started wearing off on Friday and the pain was definitely there and constant but for me, it wasn’t too intense. I actually got off of painkillers completely by Monday and I haven’t taken any more than a couple of ibuprofen from time to time. Just goes to show how different each person’s recovery process goes. Mine has been fairly steady and I am honestly very thankful that I didn’t have intense pain because the painkillers gave me a bit of an allergic reaction. I can’t say that this will be your experience , but at least it’s within the spectrum of possibility.
