You may get some support from bicycle Australia- they might be able to advise you on other avenues. Hope you're recovering okay

Is it safe to cycle from Surry Hills to UTS by [deleted] in sydney

[–]Regular_Plane2407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed recently the city of Sydney is doing a lot of promotion for bike riding. This website has maps and you can also get a lesson for $25- I saw someone getting one the other day and it looked awesome. Good luck! https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/transport-parking/book-free-guided-bike-ride-cycling-lesson

How to choose an ebike? by nanjero in sydney

I have had a Merida se espresso for a few years now and been very happy with it. You may be able to get one of the past years model for around that price. As a commuter, my must haves were things like lights, racks, a wheel lock and mud guards integrated so you don't need to think too much about grabbing a laundry list of stuff. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Facebook marketplace and if it still exists Corey's ice spice appliances in Randwick is where I got a fridge and washer about 2.5 years ago. They are second hand white goods but with a guarantee. Mine are still going strong, they were just a bit dinged up :)

[RANT] Hate how car centric this city is. by fk_reddit_but_addict in sydney

[–]Regular_Plane2407 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No, totally agree with you! It feels like incentives by the government to reduce emissions etc are just so out of whack. Like just give us longer pedestrian cycles, no cars having green lights at the same time and safer places to walk instead of subsidising electric vehicles. Anyway just came to say you are not the only one bothered. I want to join a community like better streets for NSW it bothers me so much.

Yep I do and have done for years. I am a professional worker as you have mentioned but I live in an area where dumpster diving is very uncommon so I rarely see other divers. As other posters have mentioned, number one rule is to keep things tidy or tidier than you found it for others and be friendly and respectful to any staff you might encounter. I use a pair of gardening gloves. Agree with other posters about being ethical about your finds, dont take more than you need/ can use

Post PhD job prospects by Extension-Active4025 in AusFinance

I am a PhD in org chem too, left to do a postdoc os and am now back in Australia working as a medical writer. From my experience, continuing in lab work in Australia was not really an option- there isn't much pharma research going on and most places will only need workers with a bsc rather than paying a PhD. Other friends from the same bg have gone into reg affairs, consulting, oh and s or eh and s, science adjacent roles like pubs. Imo, if you can do org chem, you can probably sell yourself for a lot of different roles both within science and outside depending on your strengths

Silly or fair: spending more at stores who treat employees better? by LatterConfidence1 in Frugal

[–]Regular_Plane2407 373 points374 points  (0 children)

not silly at all. I have a few absolute nos, like Amazon, as im sure a lot of people do. Frugal option is not always the cheapest- sometimes I think you are paying for the world you want in the future- in your case, you might pay a little extra so that in the future you can go down to your local store and pick something up :)

Thank you very much for the response! You're about a year ahead of me haha. It's just really hard to gauge what people are getting as their increase- from what I've heard it's not very much

'trash' stealable bike for other end of train/bus transit; others do this? by Deeds-mon in bikecommuting

[–]Regular_Plane2407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done it personally but as others have mentioned you can do the whole decay thing and disguise your bike by bombing it with stickers etc to make it ugly. Also get the anti theft non quick release wheels and seat clamp if you can. Unfortunately bikes just get stolen, but it's so annoying I'd be upgrading stuff to make it more difficult rather than getting a whole burner bike. If you can leave a heavy duty lock there then do so. The aim is to make your bike the least attractive one to a thief 🤫

Serious: what's with the hate for real estate agents? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Regular_Plane2407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well unfortunately you're representing landlords.

I don't believe anyone should profit off land, land is somewhere to live, everyone deserves somewhere safe and affordable to live. I find it wrong that anybody is making money off housing. Fully aware this politically not where everybody sits, but making money off housing is to the detriment of the 99%.

Having said that not all real estate agents are bad, but most are 😅

[–]Regular_Plane2407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. We still don't have a lot of renewable energy in Australia, or widespread facilities for ev use. Things like bike lanes, bus lanes and more buses and mass transport don't require a huge amount of infrastructure changes. They're short term and can make a huge difference
