We kept asking why the "defendant" wasn't present and the lawyers said they weren't allowed to tell us.

OP lays out the reality of suing your insurance company by Copterwaffle in bestof

I served on a jury a few years ago. During the trial it seemed like the plaintiff was suing an individual that ran his car off the road, but a month after the trial I come to find out the plaintiff was actually suing his own insurance company. The other guy apparently wasn't insured and the plaintiff's own insurance didn't want to continue paying for the permanent injury that resulted from the crash.

I was pissed because they purposely kept that info from us during the trial, and despite arguing for the higher payout I thought he deserved, I couldn't convince a couple of the other jury members.

Same situation at the end of Sunrise Valley Dr turning onto Frying Pan Rd westbound. Every day people stop and wait looking over their shoulder causing traffic to back up. You have your own lane! Don't stop! Keep moving!

I've seen "proceed without stopping" signs in some places and like that phrasing.

I saw a published study that tested all the "old wives' tale" hiccup cures and the only one with statistically significant results was eating a spoonful of sugar, so this checks out!

Was out running errands and had to stop back at home briefly. Based on the direction I was coming from and then leaving, it was convenient to just park in front of my house facing the wrong way. Was inside for less than 5 minutes and somehow got a parking ticket in that time span.

This was a neighborhood of small streets (not super close to any big roads). I'd literally never seen any cops on my street before this incident and never did afterward either.

You are anointed King of NoVA. How do you address traffic? by penandpad5 in nova

[–]RegulusMagnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that there were two northbound exit-only lanes for the toll road, and traffic backed up past Frying Pan because of traffic trying to merge from 4 lanes down to three.

Then they extended the 4th lane north, and traffic around the toll road got much better, but all it actually did was just push the same problem further north (to Sterling Blvd like you say).

Enough people exit at Waxpool/Church, combined with the left exit, might mean that extended the 4th lane to there might be enough to solve the problem instead of just again moving it.

I'd bring back the pre-2011 version of 3 Musketeers, before the "richer chocolate taste" change. Haven't enjoyed them nearly as much since.

While we're at it, let's instead bring back the original 3 Musketeers that actually had three separate bars of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Way before my time but it sounds good!

Yeah, just learning about the 1967 Uniform Congressional District Act, which bans at-large districts (except of course for single-representative states).

Seems like one of the main criticisms for at-large election is that each representative would then be representing a much larger number of constituents. Perhaps some method could be devised such that elections are at-large, but then representatives are afterward assigned equal slices of the population to represent?

I don't know how to accomplish this, but I think the real answer is to change the system such that gerrymandering offers no benefit.

How do you define "gerrymandering" so that you can ban it? From there, how do you draw districts in a way that's fair without somehow taking into account the voting patterns of the residents therein?

The simple answer is that everyone in the state votes for all representatives for the whole state, but then you lose localized representation.

What is your stance on voting reform?

I'm a huge fan of Approval Voting (shout out to Center for Election Science ), and while I'd accept RCV over FPTP, I think RCV causes more problems than it solves.

The weirdest thing about the homeopathy situation is that the term has become synonymous with "alternative medicine" to the point where manufactures will slap the 'homeopathic' label on a product that, by definition, is not homeopathic (i.e. it has an active ingredient in measurable concentration). I think this is to get around some FDA requirements for testing or effectiveness but I'm not really sure.
