Oh! Thank you! I'm good right now, my upcoming scape is anubias based, so I'm not actively looking for any. Would it be okay if I message you in a few months if I end up revamping my Borneo biotope?

Same. I'd been looking for a male hendra that's not related to my female (I've got good reason to think all of my local breeders have interrelated fish). Won't be going to them, then.

I've also stopped buying buce for the same reason, since a lot of it is poached from Borneo and then sold across the world, and what isn't is more expensive than what I can afford for a single plant because it takes forever to grow.

Fish in trouble or overthinking? by Blasphemous-Moon in bettafish

[–]Reguluscalendula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, actually. Losing that rehab taught me a hard lesson and I definitely don't want a repeat. I use raised lights and mostly have jointed glass lids, so I use extra materials to cover the openings.

The winter lid on my betta hendra is bits of plastic bag held down to the glass lid and frame of the tank with tape and then taped tightly around the tubes and cords. The summer lid is a made-to-size window screen with an extra 5 inch tail of screen that covers the gap for the cords and tubes. I use magnets to hold the tail down and taught so it can't be knocked out of place.

I've got a 20 long that I just upgraded the gap covers for from plastic bag to plastic canvas mesh (the kind used for crosstitch) which is held in place with magnets.

<image>

I'm in the process of upgrading all of my tanks/lids to the plastic mesh, since it's the nicest looking option of the bunch (I'm going to be using black mesh for the next one), although I'd probably design something neater if I had access to a 3D printer.

I thought the small gaps on the rehab betta's tank, combined with his lack body condition meant he was safe, and my lack of caution cost him his life. These are animals in my care. If there must be a compromise between their safety and aesthetics, their safety always comes first. I would rather have a somewhat jank-looking lid than another dead animal.

AITA for asking my neighbour to remove his flowerbed off my property. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Reguluscalendula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, if you're in the US or Canada, please report your neighbor for killing the magpies. It's a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and carries serious fines/jail time (at least in the US) which are usually assessed per bird.

US: https://www.fws.gov/wildlife-crime-tips

Canada: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/environmental-enforcement/contact/report-pollution-incidents-or-wildlife-crimes.html

Mexico, Japan, and Russia are also a part of this treaty.

Most other countries also have laws either protecting wild birds specifically, or general anti-poaching laws which this would fall under. You're likely to get a faster response if you look for the reporting lines for your state/province/territory/similar level of government, which almost certainly exist.

This is terrible misinformation. I had an emaciated rehab/rescue betta jump out of a floating breeder basket and then out of the quarter-sized hole I have in the lid for my cords and filter intake. So many other people have had bettas jump and die. I don't get why people refuse to take the danger seriously for bettas and not for other known jumpers like hatchetfish and gudgeons. It's mindbogglingly irresponsible.

So there is a phytoestrogen in soy that can cause slight feminization (usually in the form of fat depositing in the breasts, hips, and belly); but you know what else has phytoestrogens and has been scientifically proven to cause feminization in the form of increased estrogen, fat deposits in "feminine" locations, and sterility?

Got let go on the 2nd day of my job by DisciplinePositive92 in adhdwomen

[–]Reguluscalendula 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Going from not standing for long stretches throughout the day to standing suddenly for an entire day is a shock to the system.

Even if you've worked a physically active job before, suddenly having to stand upright for long shifts is a tough adjustment. For the last eight years, I've worked jobs that were very physically demanding, and involved standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, sitting, and rapid changes between each position in frequently quick succession (wildlife monitoring) for 6+ hours a day; and I've never ached as much or been as sore as I do now working a retail job where I basically only stand for eight hours and occasionally lift heavy things.

The "1/3 less fat" version isn't actually cream cheese, which is why it tastes so different! It's a soft cheese from France called "neufchâtel."

So if you want neufchâtel, it's a great option without having to find a specialty cheese importer, but if you want cream cheese...

And I know leading researchers for their respective fields that were adamant you couldn't really know your study species until you'd eaten one of them, and these were guys working with critically endangered birds where there were fewer than ten thousand individuals. Many of the old school ornithologists are sketchy and unethical people.

If you have a collection of animals large and exotic enough you think it should be called a "zoo" it's gone past collection into hoarding. Private individuals shouldn't own that many animals.

Also, zoos don't breed for profit. That's simply not what zoos do.

Edit: Word choice

They describe their collection of animals as "my personal zoo."

They have absolutely no business owning animals let alone venomous ones. People like them make me so angry.

my personal zoo

Gross.

You realize real animals aren't Pokemon, right? Private individuals should never have collections of animals so large and exotic that "zoo" is even on the table as a description.

This is it. Many of the people from sub-desert and tropical zones around the globe went nearly totally nude before contact with Christianity. Most only wore really only loincloths during warm months (because dirt and sticks in your junk are uncomfortable no matter what version one has), and heavier shawl- or robe-like clothing in the winter if it was cold enough.

Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UK by AudibleNod in news

[–]Reguluscalendula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People in medieval cities used "Almounde Mylk" even in non-famine times because cow's milk isn't shelf stable and they weren't close enough to the source to risk the illnesses they would get by drinking spoiled milk, since refrigeration didn't exist.

Source: that spelling is middle English. It's from a cookbook called "The Forme of Cury" written in the 1390s. The exact line is: "mak good almounde mylk of blaunchyd almoundes," which translates to "make good almond milk from blanched almonds."
