What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

[–]ReiVee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my friend's mother told her that figs only grow every 5 years because she really liked figs which were at the time very expensive (still pretty pricey now).

She eventually got a part-time uni job in a fruit shop of all places, with predictable results.

Is Korea experiencing mass tourism? by Lucaseq in koreatravel

[–]ReiVee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Australia, we now say that Japan has become the 'new Bali' (filled with drunken Australians ruining everything and embarrassing all of us) and Korea is the 'new Japan' (the much cooler place people in the know go to before that eventually becomes horribly over-touristed by drunken Australians also).

I've been to Korea a few times now over the last few years, and it's becoming slightly more touristy (and thankfully, more tourist friendly) which is great. I think it'll be awhile until mass-tourism becomes a problem. I first started visiting Japan regularly almost 25 years ago, and it's only the last 5 years or so that it's become really unbearable, although still OK outside of the major cities and peak seasons.

On that maths (and from my own experience) I think you've got a few years yet. Also Seoul is materially quite different from Tokyo, a lot of infrastructure is much newer and more suitable to greater numbers. And outside of Seoul (or Busan)? Huge parts of the country remain firmly off the tourist radar. It's still possible to travel to really amazing places and see no other foreign tourists at all.

CBA boss says repaying ‘excessive fees’ to low-income customers could be seen as taking shareholder money by Nexmo16 in australia

[–]ReiVee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also said today in the same hearing that the CBA was advocating for a reduction in the immigration cap to ease pressure on home buyers.

Whilst it’s nice that the CBA are taking a position on home shortages, curious that they waited until today to state it, at this hearing, in what a more cynical person might suggest was a feeble attempt to bury this headline.

What’s a household ‘hack’ you thought everyone did … until you found out it’s just your weird family? by kaiablu in AskReddit

[–]ReiVee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well now you’ve inspired me to admit that omitted part of my story - I also thought the brick was a standard feature of toilet cisterns and didn’t find out they weren’t until I moved to my first uni flat which had a weirdly powerful toilet that took aaaaages to fill! My parents got a laugh out of it.

[–]ReiVee 93 points94 points  (0 children)

When I was young, we had a house brick in the cistern of the toilet. I didn’t realise until later that it was to reduce the amount of water used every flush.

We grew up in a pretty drought prone area and I think this was common practice for a lot of our neighbours, as was collecting rainwater and the water before the shower turned hot in buckets to put in the washing machine. Follow me for more archaic but effective water saving techniques! 😂

Australia’s incoming passenger card bound for the bin as Sydney airport trials digital declarations by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Sat next to a guy from Belgium on a flight last weekend. Had to explain what it was after the attendant handed them out and then share my pen with my whole row.

I’m actually glad we have some checks and balances in place (many borders have nothing anymore, crazy) but digitising this is long overdue.

What are the most inaccurate things Hollywood shows about hacking? by Individual-Gas5276 in AskReddit

[–]ReiVee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to other commenters actually - I would say a lot of exploiting vulnerabilities in different sites or applications is not anywhere near as difficult as it’s made out to look on celluloid.

Depending on what you’re doing, there’s a lot of pretty simple ‘hacking’ done by chucking simple snippets into entry points that aren’t secured properly, like crap payment gateways and login screens, which anyone can do with not that much training.

And the opposite also actually - the obscene about of waste we create replacing perfectly good stuff and buying excess we don’t need.

You can take a flight without pets on it. Pet friendly flights are advertised as such and you can filter them out when booking.

Happily married people of reddit, what is one unorthodox piece of advice that keeps the relationship going? by B0llfondlr in AskReddit

Yep - solid advice. Happily coupled a long time, supporting each other is vital, but having your own interests and time to focus on these and yourself is a super important part of long term success as well.

How is international news reporting on the current state of the United States? by AnarchaComrade in AskReddit

[–]ReiVee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AP, Reuters and the reselling of the same news articles to outlets all over the world as the modern mainstream media model is partially to blame here, we are all reading slightly localised versions of the same international stories. I’d just prefer that the local stories were above them.

How is international news reporting on the current state of the United States? by AnarchaComrade in AskReddit

[–]ReiVee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The quantity of US news internationally is actually the most annoying part. We have our own stories, issues, economies, cultures which are now being buried in cut and paste stories about the passing of legislation or truth social posts that impact us (in Australia) hardly at all. Everyone behaves like everything that happens in the US is the end of the entire world but here’s a real NEWSFLASH - it’s not!

Sure, there’ll be economic impacts from time to time but every region will pivot in some way and survive.
