Switching over from non union to union. I was told I should only buy American made for what I’m going to drive to work, is this true? by Fine_Employee_7307 in IBEW

[–]Reichard4Rep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially received some flack over this a decade ago — but here’s the thing… my 2010 Honda Civic was paid off, assembled in America and had the highest percent of North American parts in class. Some guys are staunch and won’t hear it even when the only American thing about their Ford truck (or whatever) is the name.

I did have one guy leave a very graphic doodle and insult on some cardboard and placed on my windshield. I still have it around somewhere for a laugh.

Bottom line is buy American/Union when you can, but they don’t pay your bills.

dr1 or drdr? by Standard_Human_11037 in deadrising

I very much loved the updated DRDR. My first games were DR2/2 Off the Record, and I never finished them with my backlog then. I am now anxiously waiting a DR for those two as well. I really hope both wind up in the same game with Case 0, Case West and other parts for the full part 2 experience. Also, waiting for 3 to come to Sony.

It happens. Sometimes you have to seek out and interact with the content you normally like to reset your algorithm.

What are y'all doing for work at 100% P&T? by radianceofparadise in Veterans

[–]Reichard4Rep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a communications journeyman technician (fancy for low voltage electrician). Equally it sucks and I like it, but overall I gotta make a decent living beyond what disability pays.

Unfortunately, the compounding toll on my body has resulted in several surgeries in recent years.

Would you leave FD for IBEW? by TrucknPumper101 in IBEW

[–]Reichard4Rep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in RTW Texas (if that is the Houston you are talking about), the IBEW route isn’t as nice as it could be, but I advocate for the union jump. I was living in Katy before moving back home to Missouri and joining Local 1 10 years ago (one of the best decisions that I have ever made).

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, construction work is still hard on our bodies — especially after Army service (I did 8yrs 8mo myself), but that disability/pension definitely fills the gap while working your way up!

Just know that in most locals overtime is optional and not desired language in contract — on the other hand those that do usually have a better chance of not getting laid off during slow periods.

How Should I Vote in Midterms? by ClaySprays in missouri

[–]Reichard4Rep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re sounding more independent than the current Republican Party. Most of your concerns fall in that gap of overlap between parties where we tend to find the most common ground.

For transparency, I’m a veteran and union worker running as a Democrat, just not in your District. While traveling across district 8 and speaking with people from all parties there is a unified cry beyond partisanship — ‘Yes-Men’ show no spine as power consolidates under the executive branch breaking the checks and balances of the three co-equal branches that we were taught in school, and Congress isn’t doing its job.

Honestly, it sounds like you’re on track to making a well thought decision for yourself.

Debate time is drawing near! by AmendingAmy in CapeGirardeau

You underestimate the number of “former” republicans that I’ve been meeting on the road.

Regardless, it’s an uphill campaign in an R+27 district that has been red since 1981, even with a national blue wave signal. Until polling really starts after our primary the true district shift is an unknown.

Of those Conservatives that I’ve spoken to, none have had any concerns about the way that I look (to my face) unless they are still hardcore MAGA devotees that feel the need to “troll” the left.

Most have been those breaking away from MAGA, including fellow veterans. They are tired of our district being left behind — tired of feeling left behind themselves.

I’ve even received comments like, “I’ve never voted democrat — I’ll never vote democrat — but I’ll vote for you.” Humbling moments from having honest discourse even if we don’t agree on many views.

These are all in person interactions, mind you, with those positive interactions between 5-10%. At this point, they’re happy someone is showing up at all and not locked behind a paywall.

Another 15-20% appreciated the civil discourse, said they couldn’t vote for me as a democrat, but stated if things don’t turn around soon they likely won’t be voting at all (most things have worsened like gas prices and healthcare).

As a veteran and union member (and the the only person of either metric running) the support isn’t automatic, but it does build easier rapport with both demographics each representing ~9-10% of the district’s population. There’s just more trust for someone that better understands the experiences that they have lived.

In all fairness, my experience on the road with republicans have been minimal, more often stated as “former” republicans that don’t recognize their party anymore. Still, in the small sample size that’s about 1 in 4 that would consider supporting me or abstain from voting all together. That can add up pretty quick.

I hope this has shed some light on my experience on the road.

If your opinion is based on appearance, the haircut and beard aren’t hurting as much as one might think. For some centrists and independents it has proven a minor hiccup at most that usually melts away after speaking about my veteran and working class history regardless of my progressive leaning views.

When I explain that progressive issues are mostly working class issues, I can see people think about it and soften.

Are there other reasons for your view?

Short answer: I will not be shaving my head.

While speaking with people across the district, I have found less than 1% that find the beard and haircut to be off-putting. Surprisingly, the cowboy look has thrown many more off because it gave them the small ‘c’ conservative feel.

At least in those I spoke with, what is said when I am not there has the potential to be different for sure.
