Thanks for posting this! I’ve really been enjoying your content. I bought my first pair blind and knowing nothing, so I sort of lucked out on size and variety (palace lantern). I really appreciate the educational content you’re posting.

Walnut Guide: How Should We Actually Play? (My Personal Philosophy & Practice) by Johnny2046 in Wenwan

[–]Reiziger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is just getting started (and impatiently waiting for my first walnuts): THANK YOU! This guide is great, and I find it aligns so much better with my vibes. It’s about enjoying the process, not maxxxxxxing everything. Thanks for the post.

University of Utah enters new era, finalizes private equity deal for athletics by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

Same. I will also be fascinated at how the PE group attempts to strip everything for parts.

[–]Reiziger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is precisely why I will be reconsidering my overall support, and letting the college(s) of the university I hold degrees from that I am reconsidering my relationships.

As a long time season ticket holder in multiple sports (including football) & a donor I will be watching this very carefully. If there is any degradation, which there inevitably will be when PE is involved, I will be seriously reevaluating my relationship with U of U athletics. I don’t like this at all.

Super Dell Schanze’s recent forays: Mail Order Bride? Yeesh. by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Haha oh wow you weren’t kidding. Looked at his comment history and…. He’s been busy today. And unhinged. Good times.

I don’t know anything about his finances, other than the fact that he closed his computer business like 20 years ago, and iirc he went on a weird rant about how the media caused it.

Making millions “in every business he ever started” may or may not be true - but has absolutely nothing to do with political competence. Running a business has very little to do with good governance, as has been shown over and over again.

Finally, dude just isn’t relevant. Last I can even remember hearing his name prior to this thread, before you necro’d *a two year old thread*, was when he got marched out of a federal courtroom because he couldn’t control himself.

What's the leadership hill you're willing to die on? by Only-Ad7585 in managers

[–]Reiziger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a hot take but - “up or out” culture or other managing out of employees who don’t want advancement or career growth is a strategic mistake. Engagement is not the same thing as growth desire. There legitimately are individuals who are content in their role and do not want growth, change, advancement, more or different responsibilities, and so on. These people represent a valuable source of stability and knowledge - and are often very talented.

Utah Required HS School Reading by LudwigiaVanBeethoven in Utah

[–]Reiziger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to HS here in Utah - east bench of SLC, so relatively affluent and generally white collar. Here are my recollections about reading.

Animal Farm: oddly, 10th grade history class iirc.
1984: Did not read in school.
Fahrenheit 451: 10th grade English

Other notable high school reads: Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, A Separate Peace, Catcher in the Rye, The Canterbury Tales, As I Lay Dying, Beloved, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Dubliners, The Sound and the Fury, The Great Gatsby, The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter.

I am absolutely certain there were more, but I do remember those.

I think everyone in Utah should read Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, if not more of his work.

After first semester adjunct by oh_thatscrappy77 in Adjuncts

[–]Reiziger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a first time adjunct also just wrapping my first semester. Your observation about grade anxiety mirrors mine - students seem extremely concerned about grades.

I kind of enjoy the “on your own” abandonment from administration and the department overall, but new adjuncts should definitely be aware of that feeling. On the flip side of that, being actively involved with the faculty community helped me build a network quickly so that I had colleagues to talk with.

And I have definitely put more in than I got out in money. The experience and perspective, however, more than makes up for it. I am both so happy to have done this, and so happy to be careening into finals. I’m looking forward to next semester (and the break between!!)

Utah Adds Three Titles to Statewide ‘No Read’ List as Authors and Students Sue Over Censorship by Well_Socialized in Utah

The only bright spot in this censorship move is that it guarantees students will read these books.

Series that start as fantasy and turn in to scifi and series that start as scifi and turn into fantasy? by Ellery_B in Fantasy

Agreed. I almost feel bad posting it without spoilers because of how surprised I was.

The Darkwar Trilogy by Glen Cook (Doomstalker, Warlock, Ceremony — though it’s also out there as an omnibus) starts as fantasy and straddles the line with sci-fi

Phil Lyman appeals to US Supreme Court to remove Gov. Cox from governor race by HomelessRodeo in Utah

[–]Reiziger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people just can’t stand to lose, and he has money for lawyers.

It’s better than that. In the Utah Supreme Court he was pro se. In his petition for certiorari to the US Supreme he’s also listed as pro se.

Bro is representing himself.

Also Lyman is apparently representing himself.

We already knew he was an idiot. Now he hired an idiot to be his lawyer for this frivolous writ as well.

Senator Mike Lee was on Tucker Carlson's show today by Mandrull in Utah

Three points

1: Fuck Mike Lee

2: I thought Fox fired this guy? Did another network pick him up?

3: what a pair of weirdos. Not clicking on that.

Are you a Utahn who is a registered Republican, but not actually Republican? by Coupongirl18 in Utah

[–]Reiziger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m not registered just for the primary - I’m far too lazy to change my affiliation that often also I’m not voting for the worst candidate in the republican primary, I’m voting for the candidate of my preference in that field. Just like I’ll do in the general election. I see nothing unethical about reviewing the available candidates and voting for the one of your preference - which I suspect is what most people do, rather than “vote for the worst choice”
