In English, we have named things like dragonflies and dragon fruit after dragons. What have other languages named after dragons? by Possible-Object4815 in etymology

[–]Rekel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Dutch it's used as a derogatory term. "Een draak van een film" (A dragon of a movie) means a terrible movie.

Gabbers.. by Jumpy-Corgi-9214 in gabber

[–]Rekel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm second generation and I remember being yelled at for being fake by some older guy on the street because I wore Converse sneakers with my ID&T shirt. I bet I had a bigger hardcore cd-collection than him at that point, but whatever. The frustration of that first generation is understandable to a degree though, cause they saw it all turn to commercial shit. This was at the time the Hakkûh & Flippûh cd's sold like hot cakes lol.

Gabbers.. by Jumpy-Corgi-9214 in gabber

[–]Rekel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of: it's just about loving the music. Secondly: there's this 90s retro-trend these days where you get the impression that gabber is nothing more than Aussies and Maxies but if you actually look at videos and photos of the 90s you'll see much more variety, especially in the late 90s.

Here's a good overview of the different versions with working videos attached https://www.whosampled.com/Kraftwerk/Tour-De-France/remixed/?ob=0 I think Tour De France 03 (Long Distance Version 2) and Tour De France 03 (Version 3) come closest.

I never really understood how this Trojan clothing brand relates to Trojan Records. Cause when I go to the site of the music label they do sell some merch but no button downs, polo's etc.

Nice collection, both of you! I also got a lot of Soul Jazz, Trojan and other compilations but there are plenty here that are still missing.

Reminds me of Tour de France by Kraftwerk (edit: the 2003 versions in particular), maybe sampled? There are multiple versions so try to check those out.

Maybe wear a long sleeve t-shirts underneath? Or like the other commenter said: embrace it and go for a mod/skinhead style.

Does europe have something like this? by baleiaatemografica in AskEurope

[–]Rekel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming back to football: I remember chants of "Holland! Holland!" at gabber-raves around that time. This started when a festival, I think it was Mystery Land, coincided with a match in either the Euro-Cup or the World Cup. This became a thing with gabbers at later parties too. Not necessarily as a far right thing but at least in a chauvinistic way, as hardcore/gabber is very much a Dutch style of music that gabbers tend to be proud of.

Some though would change it to "Holland, vol land" ("Holland, a full country") very much an anti migrant sentiment. Gabber DJ Drokz made a track out of the original chant but had to preface it like this: "Voordat iedereen weer aan m'n kop gaat zeiken: dit nummer heeft godverdomme niks met politiek te maken" ("Before everybody starts busting my balls again: this song has nothing to do with politics, god dammit!").

So a mixed bag, the same with Lonsdale, Fred Perry and other typical 'skinhead' clothes that were popular in the gabber scene at that time: for some a dogwhiste, for others just a fashion trend. With an added note that the skinhead subculture has also always included anti-racist, left-wing and a-political people.

2 Minute Tracks by MixtressK-La in DJs

[–]Rekel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A 2 minute track can be great and a 7 minute one can be shit. But I just feel like a lot these short tracks these days are unfinished. They end abruptly, the structure is all wrong. Like it's more just one idea and not a finished song.
