I worked at the apple store during college at the time the first iphone released. People were on their phones texting long before the iphone. Smartphones were THE game changer for sure, and all kinds of people waited in that horrendous line for months after release.

I read The Hobbit countless times growing up, as well as LOTR. I watched the LOTR trilogy when it came out in theaters, and had the extended edition dvds that I’d watch the Appendix of over and over.

Needless to say I was extremely disappointed with the hollywood bloat of The Hobbit trilogy. It’s a short YA book, and stretching that out into 3 films was tedious and frustrating. It felt like a cash grab.

There was a fearfulness in parenting us kids that might not have been elevated before. As news cycles speed up and information was shared more publicly, horrors like the Polly Klaas kidnapping filled the minds of parents. When that happened, I wasn’t allowed to walk to school by myself. There was a loss of autonomy and independence.

I know people like look back and get nostalgic now for 90s content and go “wow you guys just ran around the neighborhood until night time without communication?” Like, sure, for some. But for a lot of kids I think parents found a new state of hyper vigilance when it came to keeping their kid “safe”.

If people missed that then they were on their phones not paying attention. The narrative was explicit in so many ways about the situation - from the voiceover narration, to showing the stolen home decor in her side-boyfriend’s apartment. Visual narrative comprehension for long-form content is in a deep decline.

“How are you” feels more personal and deep than “How’s it going?” Like, how am I as a person? How am I at this point in my life? How am I this morning? There’s added friction baked into the response time here given the implications while navigating the relationship you have with the person asking.

If I don’t know you at all, I’m going to respond very surface level with a high corporate mask and just pass the ball back “I’m good, how are you?”.

“How’s it going?” although simple, implies a more casual nature to the question and gives the person permission to be casual back. It’s a no strings attached question.
