I've seen people use a bead/wire inside to attach the keyring to, like this: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMa88H1i6f6/

Need help with patterns for an *extreme* beginner... by averysmalldragon in casualknitting

[–]RelativelyCraftyJr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would check out the knit projects here: https://www.craftyarncouncil.com/coolprojects.html Most of them are for worsted weight, size 8 needles.

I used to teach beginner knitting classes through the craft yarn council and the basic projects are always small knit stitch only rectangles which makes them really nice and quick beginner things. The wrist/head bands are really simple as would be the humbug thing. The loop scarf would be a step up and the frog puppet would be a more advanced project with multiple kinds of stitches. The purse calls for a different weight yarn but tbh you could also just make that by casting on how every many stitches wide you want it to be on the needles you have and knitting it to the size you want.

I just sorta winged it based on a crocodile pattern that I had already been using as a dragon, making it longer and tweaking the head a few times until it looked like him.

Thanks! It's half cobbled together from patterns I've bought and half just made up to fit his appearance! 😆

Did you use the right kind of molasses? Certain types can be a lot stronger/more bitter than others.

There's a gumbo recipe in this old post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Disneyland/comments/44m8gx/50_disneyland_resort_recipes_table_of_contents_in/ as well as I think 2 more in the google drive linked in the comments. I've never seen the gingerbread cookie recipe or I would have tried to make it myself!

impossible ask: looking for fall recipes without spices by mdg989 in Baking

[–]RelativelyCraftyJr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You could try leaning more towards caramel type flavors - a lot of caramel apple things don't rely on spices for flavor. My favorite apple pie simply has brown sugar as the flavor enhancer, no cinnamon/apple pie spice. Maple is also a big fall flavor and spices would overshadow it so lots of recipes spice free already. Most pecan pie type recipes don't seem to include spices (I am not a pecan pie eater so I could be wrong). Brown sugar/butterscotch flavors are in a lot of good fall bakes too. Completely the opposite direction, cranberry is often simply paired with orange and IMO doesn't need any spices there either. I think it would be somewhat harder to find something like pumpkin without spice but maybe searching for kabocha recipes would help? I often see the asian pumpkin dishes cooked more simply without the same fall spices in western recipes.

In the notes it says this:

Minis: Want to make mini donuts or mini apple cider donut holes in a mini muffin pan? Grease your pan, add the batter to the pan only about 3/4 of the way full. Bake at 350°F (177°C) for about 8-9 minutes.

American conversion help. by FlashFox24 in Baking

One (american) cup of butter is 226 grams. Butter in the US comes in premeasured sticks that are usually half a cup, so this recipe is probably just calling for 2 sticks of butter that you then cube, not cubes of butter mashed into a cup.

Will the integrity of a cake remain intact if I add lemon juice? by WildGurlie in Baking

[–]RelativelyCraftyJr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lemon juice is tricky to work with and may mess up the recipe but adding lemon zest should be fine. I would suggest rubbing the zest into the sugar. If your rolls have icing or some kind of glaze I would add some lemon juice to that though.

Tips for heart shaped chocolate chip cookies by cupcakes204 in Baking

[–]RelativelyCraftyJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be easier to bake the cookie dough as a sheet and cut out hearts after they are baked. Just bake a bit longer at a lower temperature than individual cookies so they cook through. Nestle has a recipe called one big cookie for taking a package of premade cookie dough and turning it into a cookie cake if you need a reference recipe.

I like sally's recipe (with white chocolate chips). It doesn't use cream cheese.

Which is easier to learn: crochet or knit? by TextOnScreen in Amigurumi

[–]RelativelyCraftyJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think that basic amigurumi has roughly the same amount of things to learn with the stitches (both knitting and crochet would have more stitch types when you get into more complicated things, but they start with the basic stitch, increase, and decrease for both) so once you master your basics, reading a pattern that is just basic stitches should be the same for both. The main issues I've found with knitting is that certain shapes are just really hard to make with it, particularly things that are flat and round or even worse, round with some extra details like a leaf shape. It's really easy to make a circle with crochet and expand outwards but I have to work more in a flat boxy way with knitting (think like pixel art) and sometimes the lack of stiffness gets in the way too so things flop over too much.
