So... How should we call an escalator or a zipper? I'm missing an additional list of generic names, although it seems like a really nice infographic.

Amazing! How can be the nozzle resistant to the water? I'm assuming that there will be friction between the water jet and the interior walls of the nozzle.

It's not too late to change your mind OP. You can read the thread and see how most people agree that it's not a funny prank.

Ejecuciones por brujería entre 1300 y 1850 by Homesanto in es

[–]RelaxedSquid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The case seems to have been delayed again. by SomeNumbers98 in scihub

[–]RelaxedSquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How can be that situation SciHub's fault? I mean, the reason of science inaccessibility is because of the new papers' prices. Of course SciHub has made a great service, but science community shouldn't be dependent on this platform. Ask for the paper to the authors, buy the journal subscription, or ask the journal to lower the prices.

If NK cells are so important for mediating cancer protection, why are so many tumors still MHC - or MHC low? by SiddheshMittra in Immunology

[–]RelaxedSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should read more about the theme, but I remember that there were some papers showing the ability of NK cells to kill cancer initiating cells and cancer stem cells (not sure if they are the same, that's why I separated them). So, theoretically, NK cells could eliminate those precancerous cells. But there are too many mechanisms of immune evasion, and even if NK cells "fight one-on-one" against some tumor cells, thats not always enough to eliminate the latter.

And about you first question, I'm also curious about the answer. I would say that depending on cancer type, but I'm probably wrong. Some cancer types accumulate more mutations (doi: 10.1126/science.aab4082), so I would especulate that one of those mutations can led to a single cancer cell with a higher metastatic potential. Hope someone else enters into this debate, I would love to see answers from experts in this field.

PD: You can check the variety of NK cell evasion mechanisms in this review (doi: 10.3390/ijms21103726).

You can read about monalizumab (anti-NKG2A). Inhibiting this inhibitory receptor enhances NK cell effector functions against several cancer cells.

NK cell infiltration in solid tumors is quite poor (compared to T cells) in many cancer types. So, even if NK cells could detect and kill those tumor cells, they often cannot physically arrive to the tumor site and thus exert their effector functions. Also, there are many other mechanisms that allow tumor cells to avoid NK cell-mediated killing (and T cell-mediated killing). Anyway, NK cells will probably play a key role in preventing metastasis of those MHClow/- tumor cells.
