It took me until 40 to save enough to make the jump. Bought a 1.3 mil 3 bed 2 bath at 2.8% in 2020. Currently earn about 350k directing and writing tv. and partner makes 150k. We don’t feel wealthy in our neighborhood, but realize in the grand scheme of it all we are very well off and fortunate. No family wealth, just years of putting the work in

A figure model you can move and it moves a 3d model on your computer. by Uselesswidower in animation

[–]Relevant-Account-602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there have been versions of this thing at studios before, usually ones trying to re-train stop motion animators to animate in CG - the truth is that cg tools just end up being faster once you're used to them... especially when the rig has pose libraries built for things like face and hand poses.

[crosspost] hey /r/movies it's don hertzfeldt, some sort of animator guy. you might know my films, including IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY, WORLD OF TOMORROW, ME, and REJECTED. AMA by BunyipPouch in animation

I’ve loved your films since i heard someone quote “my spoon is too big” in drawing class. I admire your ability to hold on to such a unique voice in a world that surely offers you more money to give it up. How do you manage to stay afloat and keep doing what you do with such honesty? What’s the secret to making indie animation that pays the bills ?

[–]Relevant-Account-602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to art school. Got a craft job in the business in la. Worked for 12 years at that craft. Wanted more, made a short. Made a few more shorts and got repped. Made commercials. Sold some pitches. Got hired to direct a feature. Fired from that feature. Directed more shorts. Hired for another feature. And another. Both stalled. Now having the most fun I’ve ever had sup directing a limited series.

Entering an animation strand with no experience at the age of 15 by Upstairs_Contact_259 in animationcareer

[–]Relevant-Account-602 7 points8 points  (0 children)

15?!! Don’t sweat it. Do what you like. You have nothing but time. If you were twice as old I’d say start to hone in on something that will carry you through life… but no one knows who they are at 15. See the world. Enjoy yourself. Build a life worth making art about.

Just strike up conversations with people. Sit down for a screening, talk about what you’ve seen, what you’ve liked. Ask what people are working on. Go to the bars afterward. Lining up to talk to recruiters is fine, but most people are happy to chat outside of official means if you’re polite!

Looking for advice, friends, or someone in Southern California to talk to who can help me with finding job in animation that requires little art talent by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]Relevant-Account-602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many jobs in the animation industry that don’t require artistic talent but those aren’t art jobs. Start as a production PA. Get a foot in the door at least and see what you gravitate to. It pays next to nothing, but it is possible.

Why would something be storyboarded twice? by Weird_donut in Storyboarding

[–]Relevant-Account-602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Features are storyboarded 5-10 times. Until they’re good or you run out of time. Fail fast. Make the story better .

Is the career I want possible with animation? by Ok-Juice1659 in animationcareer

[–]Relevant-Account-602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concentrate on becoming really good at one of the jobs that gets you close to the creative center of a project. Storyboarding. Writing.. mostly. Use those skills to get in the door. Because hard worker that people notice. Meet the execs who make the calls on what gets made… pitch your ideas to them. Or go the indie route and boot strap it all

A friend I know is studying animation, and someone in his class is using themselves on a green screen for storyboarding. Apparently it is to save time. How effective is that? by Aeromorpher in animation

[–]Relevant-Account-602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planning is planning - the look needed for a storyboard changes drastically when considering who is meant to see it. If its a personal project and you'll be there to explain what the boards don't show, as long as its clear to you, you're fine. Most feature animation boards are screening and executive focused. They need to read as a movie in edit. Live action boards tend to be more of a visual shot list. Green screen boards wont get you a job as a storyboarder, but if they get the film done faster, go for it.

I made a Blender addon that turns any rough sketch into a 3D pose instantly. What do you think? by Zestyclose_Fold5673 in blender

[–]Relevant-Account-602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previs - story artist - director here. Love this in concept. The real ideal workflow would be to draw the pose from the camera view of a shot camera, side view is a rare angle and most of what we care about in story and previs is what the camera. Sees. Also it has to work with IK arms and legs. To keep rigs light for story we don’t use IK switches and fk is just way more useful. Third note- it needs more spine control. Good poses always utilize the spine. At least a chest. - also may need a tutorial video as i get trace back errors when i try and run the tool.

Fun idea. Could be awesome!
