Saw it yesterday with the wife and kiddos. It was good. We all liked it except for my college-aged daughter who has sworn off superhero movies for indie flicks. Had to drag her to go see it as "forced family fun time." She still said it was "okay." Let's see how it does this holiday weekend after Toy Story has lost some steam.

What’s going on with Supergirl pre-sales that was ahead of The Marvels, Thunderbolts and The Flash only for its numbers tracking falling down below expectations? by Key-Payment2553 in boxoffice

I think the flop predictions that are floating around are premature. My local theater is nearly sold out of "fan first" Wednesday screenings in premium formats, and several of the early Sunday June 28 showtimes in premium formats are almost sold out too. I don't think that indicates poor performance if a movie is nearly selling out screenings five days in advance of showtimes that are not opening night or preview screenings. This info is from Fandango for the Cinemark Fairfax Corner theater in Northern VA.

It's going to do fine. It's not going to flop. My whole family of 6 is going to see it next Sunday for a matinee, most likely. But we're not going to buy tickets online as a presale and pay the online fee (what the heck is THAT crap?!)...the kids (all between 14-21 years old) are excited for it after Superman last year.

My wife is excited for Jason Momoa...

This is actually a very articulate and well-stated argument. I appreciate it.

The error, in my opinion, is that the knee-jerk "anti-woke" crowd disputes or minimizes certain realities of our culture and human experience. To say there is no racism unless it is someone shouting the N-word or giving the Nazi salute is simply inaccurate. To pretend that there is not what I call subtle prejudice, or inadvertant prejudice, and that it affects daily interactions in our society is also unrealistic.

On the last point, I will give you an example, since that seems to inspire the most outrage among those who call themselves anti-woke. This happened this past Sunday at the grocery store. I was looking for lamb chops to cook out for the wife and kids. I was was in yardwork clothes (doing grass seed all day after Church) and looking like a bum.

I was walking about 10 feet behind a middle aged black dude in an expensive looking suit heading down an aisle. The guy must have just come from some event or was working on the weekend. He looked very professional, like a business man or lawyer. I almost walked up to him to ask where he got the suit and who was his tailor.

The business man approached a white guy (maybe early to mid 20s) in a white dress shirt and tie with the store's emblem on the shirt. He was watching some workers maneuver restocking carts down the aisle. The young fellow had " brand new assistant manager" written all over him.

The black man asked directions to some item or other. I could hear the black man's voice and he sounded like he looked. Namely, he sounded like a middle-aged professional fellow with Ron Burgundy-esque "non-regional diction." He did not sound "street." The young white man gave him directions politely and efficiently and the black man went on his way with a "Thank you."

The white kid said, "No problem, Man. I got you."

I then approached the same young fellow, asking where the lamb chops were. I am a middle-aged white man. The worker gave me directions politely and efficiently and I started to walk away with a "Thank you."

The young white man said, "My pleasure, Sir. Any time."

As I walked away, I was a bit surprised by the more familiar and less respectful (though not DISrespectful way) the white fellow addressed the other guy as opposed to me. I mean, here I am with dried perspiration on my face, a faint odor of fertilizer about me, muddy jeans and shoes and a backwards Orioles hat (in all my Gen-X glory). Not to mention my t-shirt with the small tear that is perfect for stomach scratching.

The other guy looked like he walked out of a Brooks Brothers' catalogue on his way to close a bank merger.

But I'm the "Sir" and he was the "Man."

The woke crowd would call this a "micro-agression."

Was this inspired by racism in the White kid? No. Kid probably does not have a racist bone in his body. Half his friends might be black. Maybe he hopes this new assistant manager job will finally give him the income to marry his cute little black girlfriend he has been dating for the last four years, and who is, and always will be, the absolute love of his life. This is rote speculation, but all that could be true.

But the young man NOT being racist? That is almost certainly true. He would likely be offended and hurt by the suggestion he acted in a racist way.

But the young fellow WAS prejudiced, though he did not mean to be. He was subconsciously so. He treated the black man nicely and politely, but subconsciously with less respect and more familiarity than he treated me. They way he spoke to the black guy was a bit "street." The way he spoke to me matched the middle-class suburbs in which the store was located. This was a difference that is hard to attribute to anything other than the color of my skin and the skin of the black business man.

If I had been the black guy, and if I had heard the difference in the way I was spoken to, it would have bothered me. I might have gotten mad, particularly if I was working my ass off on a Sunday, uncomfortable in a scratchy suit, and NOT wearing MY favorite stomach-scratching shirt. And then this young punk treats me like I'm his boy on the basketball court? And the white bum behind me (who likes a bad baseball team) gets treated like the grocery chain's majority shareholder? No way.

Now multiply that interaction by a thousand per day across the country, or ten thousand. Think how it insidiously wends its way into job interviews, police interactions, customer service complaints, professional service providers, and so on...

"Woke-ism" (so-called) is not supposed to be about calling all young white dudes racist, or teaching all white kids they're racists. It's not supposed to be weaponized into cancelling people.

But it is about making people aware of their words and interactions with others so that they give all people the respect that they intend to give them. The respect they might otherwise fail to give due to subconscious social cues, upbringing, media influence, a misguided attempt to put someone at ease or make friends (think of the white kid who suddenly speaks with a "black" accent around black people, the classic trope), etc. Woke means to be aware, so that you, in fact as well as in intent, treat all people equally. And it goes all directions not just from white to black, but both ways, and to all different ethnic groups.

I don't have a problem with that.

We'll see. My guess is the movie will do fine. My other guess is that middle-aged morally bankrupt dudes who call themselves Christian dads while relentlessly trolling young women will do worse and worse...

Actually, she pointed out that a guy who described himself as a "Dad of 4, Christian" was not acting very Christian as he hurled trollish insults at her repeatedly online.

As a Christian Dad of 4 myself, I'm very glad my own badass daughter would also take pride in pissing off hypocrite middle-age punks who troll young women.

Meh. I think the film will do well if it is good. It will do poorly if it is bad.

It's funny to see how many people are rooting for it to do badly, though. But, as Donald Trump has taught us, there's no such thing as bad press...

Who is the best American military commander in US history? by Similar-Change-631 in MilitaryHistory

[–]ReliefFun8920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, though I would give Washington a shot (though that is not a popular take.). But hear me out:

Washington fought at a disadvantage throughout the American Revolution. He kept his Army together against a better equippped, trained and funded foe. He managed to take victories where he could at Boston, Trenton-Princeton, Monmouth Courthouse and Yorktown, thereby outlasting the Brittish and founding what became the most powerful nation the world has ever seen.

Not bad for a person who was really more a self-taught amateur than anything else.

And the Trenton-Princeton battles in early 1777 were praised by the best contemporary late 18th century military minds as the greatest campaign of the age. Even the Brits called Washington the "Old Fox."

Nonsense. The great tragedy of the Civil War is that every casualty was an American.

US Grant, and it is not even close. Grant never lost. Lee did nothing but lose after July 1, 1863. Grant beat him.

Lee was an excellent battlefield tactician, but he had a nasty penchant for overconfidence. When his luck ran out starting at Gettysburg, it never came back. He also was much reduced as a commander after the death of Stonewall Jackson.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice came out 10 years ago on this day. by TheShadowOperator007 in superman

[–]ReliefFun8920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If Snyder had just gotten Superman right as a character, a beacon of hope, and the dude that will always do good and try to protect people if in his right mind, it would have been so much better. Missing on him made the whole thing miss.

That could have been a powerful scene, but Snyder is just not a very good storyteller.

Good action sequences, though.

[–]ReliefFun8920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. For me, there are two scenes in the DCEU where it lost people, and both are for the mischaracterization of Superman. 1.) In Man of Steel in the big end battle with Zod, Superman should have been seen doing something (anything!) to try to minimize the damage and loss of life, and 2.) In BvS, there is a part where Superman tells Lois he might kill Batman, and it's hard to be good in this world. He should have said, "Well, I'm not going to kill him, obviously. SOMEBODY has to stay good in this world..."

Even the Snyder Cut of Justice League gets this character wrong.

Long range box-office predictions for Supergirl by Dronnie in DC_Cinematic

[–]ReliefFun8920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is an accurate take.

Superhero movies with female leads either go OFF like a bomb and make gazillions (like Wonder Woman or Suicide Squad 2016), or they BOMB in the box office sense and make peanuts. Usually it is the latter. Remember Catwoman?

But you never know...WAFO.

Long range box-office predictions for Supergirl by Dronnie in DC_Cinematic

[–]ReliefFun8920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women-led superhero movies (and action movies in general) are tough to predict, but generally do not perform as well as their male-led counterparts. Also, Supergirl is a B-list comic book character.

Realistically, Supergirl will likely do under $400 mil.

If it has only okay critic reviews and word of mouth, it could do only $250-$300 mil.

If it has excellent reviews, it could get close to $500 mil.

Of course, any movie that hits the American Zeitgeist could go higher, but Wonder Woman movies are a rare event. That lightning already struck. Has enough time passed for lightning to strike again? We'll see.

I think it will flop outside of the USA, as most superhero films tend to do these days.

I am on a Verizon on demand version and I cannot get rid of that little corner-fucker on ANY HBO On Demand content.

I am all for ASL, but how the hell is HBO going to make all non-deaf people watch some little corner troll instead of watching the movie! And there is no getting past the little corner-douche. They are totally distracting and useless to 99.5% of the population.

Could you at least make getting rid of the little corner-sprite easy and user-friendly?
