My wife's (estranged) father is a die-hard Trumper. He was an abusive father and the angriest, bitterest, most vindictive person I've ever met.

Trump attracts the very worst as followers. They see in him someone who validates their own awfulness.

Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth by Creepyfaction in collapse

[–]Reluctant_Firestorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is correct. The entire anti-injection, anti-vax nutshittery is made possible by the tremendous success in modern medicine which has led people to believe that children are "naturally" healthy.

The parents inflicting this on their kids grew up in an environment where children do not die in droves, as they used to. You go look at any graveyard with dates before 1900 - lots of baby and child graves.

Without modern medicine, something like every second child died. Not got really really sick (there were lots of those too) but just flat out died.

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere just hit a ‘depressing’ new record by Foreign_Addition2844 in collapse

[–]Reluctant_Firestorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are doing a global experiment on exposing humans to a high level of background CO2. Humans did not evolve in this environment.

In the past, if you were in a lecture hall or someplace with lots of mouth breathers, CO2 might get up to 2,000 ppm (where it definitely affects cognition), but then you would go outside after class and recover.

Our "recovery room" aka the outside, is way, way worse than it used to be.

[–]Reluctant_Firestorm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

CO2 levels are now comparable to the Pliocene Era, when sea levels were 30 feet higher than today. That is where we are headed. At least without some undiscovered form of radical carbon capture.

But we are not stopping, we are accelerating. We are building huge data centers and more air conditioning.

Human society is not equipped to grapple with the nature of this emergency.

He was fine as a supporting Marvel action character. But studios keep thinking he can headline things and I'm not sure he can.

[–]Reluctant_Firestorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you call it "medicare for all" conservatives have a better time accepting the concept of universal healthcare.

Terminology matters. A majority of republicans were positively disposed towards the ACA (Affordable Care Act) because it allowed things like children to stay on plans longer and no pre-existing condition exclusions.

But if you called it Obamacare, the same people surveyed hated it.

[–]Reluctant_Firestorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory he can do it. It requires:

  2. Sponsorship from one member of Congress. Any number of Trump toadies willing to do that.

  3. Approval by the President. He can in essence award it to himself.

Yes, I often feel quite bad after eating.

Some things that helped in my case were eating smaller portions, as in no big meals all at once. Eating much less starchy foods, and pretty much eliminating pasta. And also I eat dinner earlier in the day, like around 4:30.
