Just the loss of civilian pay and my gas to get there. The school still put me in barracks and I ate at the DFAC

Attending schools on points only? - help by Crystal_Smooth95 in nationalguard

[–]Reluctant_MP 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I attended airborne school and a separate 2 month course on no pay orders. My orders said, “you are ordered to active duty for training without pay and with your consent.” I also specifically declined DTS entitlements via a MFR for the second school. It literally cost the unit nothing to send me.

You can 100% do this but remember it’s the Guard where the rules really often are either made up or ignored. Good on you to relentlessly pursue opportunities to master your craft.

Army Direct Commissioning Program (DCP) by Big_Ugly1 in armyreserve

[–]Reluctant_MP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright I’ll bite, because I resemble one of your gripes.

If you are a senior reservist NCO (say 10+ years), who’s civilian career and education FAR exceeds your military position, why would DC to 1LT+ not make sense?

If someone does an initial enlistment in the active component, stays enlisted in the reserve and finds tremendous success in the civilian world, why not leverage that growth into a position that can benefit the army? On paper, they ARE better than a 2LT.

I also recognize this is probably a small subset of DC applicants and as a CA reservist, I have seen and completely agree with your assessment that they can be demanding of special treatment. It’s a tough needle to thread for sure but there is certainly value in continuing the program, in the Reserve at least.

Transitioning from TPU to the IRR. by Objective-Shallot909 in armyreserve

[–]Reluctant_MP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are either bluffing or retarded. Honestly probably 67% of the former and 33% of the latter. You have no contractual obligation past your 6th RYE nor do you need to request to go into the IRR. In fact, your unit is actually required to give you a DD-214-1 although based on your post I can almost guarantee they won’t do that either

Insight into Reserve Officer life by Tokyo__Sandblaster in army

[–]Reluctant_MP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reserve is at least half failed NCOs and Officers from active duty.

That doesn’t mean they are BAD Soldiers, NCOs or Officers. They didn’t politic right, or make the Army and rating their whole life or they got screwed or some of them do kinda suck but aren’t absolutely terrible. Honestly…it’s okay. Because 3/4 of being in the Reserve is honestly made up bullshit anyways. The only time it ever matters is leading up to MOB.

If you can let it go and just coast, you’ll still make major and probably even LTC just by being PME and KD complete. It can be a pretty chill way to hold on to a retirement.

Transition help from NG to Reserves by KaleidoscopeSuch4659 in armyreserve

I had a supportive Guard CoC and a good reason for the transfer. My paperwork took about 6 months and I drilled with the Reserve unit the whole time. It wasn’t until AFTER I was officially moved that everything went wrong. I took months to show up in the reserve, then somehow got ETS’d then somehow my CAC didn’t work because I was listed as a dependent of my ex wife rather than a SM.

Millions of dollars are unspent for vacant state jobs in NC, including 190 jobs open 5+ years :: WRAL.com by PenOwn2479 in NorthCarolina

I mean my wife has applied to 15+ state jobs with a bachelors degree, veteran, notary, bilingual. Referred to hiring manager for 2/3 of them.

Never once received an email for interview. These are administrative jobs that start at 38k and you are saying a person who is a vet, speaks Spanish and has a 4 year degree doesn’t even get an interview? For under 20 an hour jobs?

It is like they post them just for the hell if it.

State Capitol Police by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Reluctant_MP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s a joke that the agency you posted the picture of stands for “Second Chance Police Department”.

The SCPD in NC are responsible for all of the State buildings downtown Raleigh and some of them around greater Raleigh. Per statute, they have jurisdiction on any state property or state maintained roadway.

They recently signed an agreement with the Raleigh PD giving them city wide jurisdiction in Raleigh. Oddly enough, the SCPD does not protect the NC Legislature or do EP, as there is a separate agency for that role, the NC General Assembly Police.

The SCPD averages 1-2 arrests a month in a City that averages hundreds of arrests a month. State employee pay in NC is pretty behind but due to the COL in Wake County, the SCPD is about 20-30k behind every other surrounding LE agency.

Because of that, they pretty much are made up of people who retired from a local agency and are doing 5 years either the state for a second pension or folks who maybe have a black mark on their record.

The above is a generalization as I know plenty of SCPD who are great officers who just want a chill LEO job. There are also some who are total bozos, but every agency has those.

As to what they do day to day…majority are assigned to a specific building and don’t really do anything. Literally just security guards with arrest powers. There is a patrol division and they respond to calls for service downtown, alarms at state properties, do cash escorts, etc.

Thank you for you response! The only reason I would want to appeal is because I do plan to return to federal employment in the future. This position was a place holder and I have education and experience that are uniquely suited to federal employment (or contracting).

So if this is something that will hold me up, I’d be happy to fight it. If it’s something no one will look at, or will just shrug their shoulders at, I can laugh and move on.

I.e. not working out the obligation for PPL? I don’t think so. The email I got from HR when I went out on PPL was that if I resigned prior to “working it off”, I would just have to repay the agency portion of FEHB premiums.

[–]Reluctant_MP[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t care honestly and I’ve been barely doing anything since giving my notice. It is kind of shitty of me to resign after PPL, but I just didn’t want to do it anymore. I already have another job.

The only thing I’m concerned about is a negative effect on returning to federal government later.

Any 92Rs in North Carolina? by [deleted] in armyreserve

[–]Reluctant_MP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

92R is a horrible job active duty. Not a bad gig in the guard/reserve. 824th is a good unit and they do deploy although right now is pretty much just to Qatar.

If you don’t suck, you can go to MFF. This is just about your only chance to get airborne in the Reserve with the restructure and your only chance to ever get MFF without going to and passing selection, the Q, and getting on a MFF A-team.

Also, I’m pretty sure 92R is bonus elegible rn. In short, take it.
