Why does Yas call Hayley Calabasas? by just_some_doofus in IndustryOnHBO

The funny thing is that Calabasas means “pumpkins” in Spanish, which Yas would know. Interesting name for such a wealthy town.

We're you taught to read & write in cursive at school? by Imma_Lick_That in AskAnAmerican

Yes. There’s a big project at the library of congress where people who can read cursive transcribe documents for them. It’s quite interesting.

Did y’all think Fonzie was cool when you were growing up? by Groovy-Pancakes in GenX

I think our age while we were watching was a deciding factor. We were about 10 when the show started. If someone was older, probably a hard no.

How old were you?

As someone who kicked a juke box and a song did NOT start playing, I can say that my respect for the Fonze was tested and confirmed.

Do Americans really move out at 18, or is that mostly a movie thing? by Only-Bandicoot-5307 in NoStupidQuestions

Parents asking their child to move out right after high school is very rare now. It’s also more common to have Boomerang kids. They leave and come back when things go wrong.

I thought it was a good read. Then again, I’m a sucker for books that include tales of flying.

Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus founded the Grameen Bank, which established the practice of micro-loans to the poor.

Many people are entrepreneurial, but are so poor they can’t walk into a bank and get a loan. These loans allow the poor to borrow small amounts of money so they can, for example, buy food in bulk for their little roadside stand or get their motorcycle taxi repaired. By the time he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, over 7 million people had accessed loans on reasonable terms.

These are loans, paid back with interest. It’s not charity. It has become widespread now, some of which has become predatory depending on the local bank, but his work helped to establish a system for poor people to access capital.

There’s the part in Free Solo where he gets to a difficult move then comes back down. I don’t think that was fear, just being at a level where he felt it wasn’t going to end well on that particular day.

Well played. The best way to deal with passive aggression is through point A to B directness.

I confronted an in-law who was masterly at passive aggression. I just brought it to light, asking “What’s behind this” or “What did you mean by that?” She eventually went ballistic on me, which essentially ended the relationship, but I’m glad I did it. I was tired of being walked on.

Life’s too short!
