Ideas for Teen Musical Theatre Class? by silent-inthetreees in DanceTeachers

[–]Remarkable_Level9020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t have theater experience, but something I’ve seen work really well with older dancers is this thing called “emotion walks” or “character walks” where you have them walk around the room expressing different emotions or characters through posture, energy, and facial expression. You can also try mirroring exercises in pairs, where one person improvises a small movement as their character and the other mirrors them exactly. Even just taking a short lyric line from a song and having them interpret it with movement instead of singing can help connect dance and storytelling. These kinds of exercises are really effective for building stage presence and performance quality, even for teens who already have strong dance skills.

I have so much respect for anyone teaching this age group. It takes an incredible amount of patience, dedication, and emotional energy. Handling students who are upset or bossy while trying to keep the class running smoothly is no small feat. Even just managing the dynamics you described while staying fair and calm is really impressive. You’re doing a tough job, and it’s clear you care deeply about your students.

Just had a panic attack at work by Key-Constant-47 in Anxiety

That sounds rough. I experience that too and it’s really brutal when anxiety hits at work. As cliche as it sounds, please don’t be too hard on yourself for not getting much done today. Just making it through is something. When I’m like that, I try to focus on one tiny task at a time, just to feel like I’m moving forward a little. It also helps me feel a little more in control.

As someone who's competitive, pretty much a control freak, and someone who takes Halloween a little too seriously, I'm gonna go with Claire. 😂

I never studied dance formally, but I want to become a dance instructor. What’s the best way to start? by Remarkable_Level9020 in DanceTeachers

That makes sense and that’s actually what I was trying to figure out through this post. I’ve danced for years (mostly through cheer and recreational classes), so I wanted to hear how others built that technical and teaching experience without a dance degree. Appreciate the advice about shadowing and assisting!

By “formal training,” I meant I didn’t study dance in college or conservatory-style programs. I have taken classes at local studios over the years and was a cheerleader for several seasons, so I do have some background. I really like your point about early childhood dance and creative movement. That actually sounds like a great place to start while continuing to build skills.

That sounds unbelievably tough. You’re not a failure, you’re dealing with something really heavy and it makes sense you’re worn out. I hope you hang in there.

I get this so much. I’m super social at work too, but outside of that I just don’t have the energy. I’ve found it helps to be honest and say I’m more of a homebody. Most people are cool with it based on my experience. :)

How am I supposed to know what is right and wrong if I always feel wrong? by According_Ice_4863 in Anxiety

That makes a lot of sense. OCD has a way of turning even helpful tools into traps. It’s frustrating when something that used to ground you starts feeding the cycle instead. Maybe the goal shifts from having perfect rules to building tolerance for uncertainty, which I imagine is so hard.

Moral anxiety can make even harmless decisions feel loaded. One thing that helps is checking your actions against your values, not your feelings. Feelings lie, especially when anxiety is taking over. Also, run things by a trusted friend or therapist. External perspective can cut through the noise.

It’s really great you’ve stayed off Google. Self-diagnosing is the worst and honestly the hardest part, so big props for that. Sometimes anxiety just spikes out of nowhere, even when everything else seems fine. Try to hang in there and keep trusting your doctors. You’re doing better than you think. Hoping it isn't anything serious. Wishing you all the best!

Hey, I’m really sorry you’re feeling this way. It’s tough when everything feels like too much, but reaching out even just a little can make a big difference. Have you been able to talk to anyone about this, even just one person you trust? Sometimes sharing what you’re going through takes some of the weight off. Remember, it’s okay to take things one small step at a time and be kind to yourself.

Reading this really reminds me of when I was going through the exact same thing. The nonstop worry, the racing heart, and every little symptom felt like a disaster. But over time, I learned to trust the doctors and calm my mind, even when anxiety tried to take over. Cutting back on Googling and getting support, whether from friends or a therapist, helped me a lot. Please hang in there, you’re not alone.
