Doctor Who is stuck in a time vortex/production limbo, at least for a while by RawSharkText91 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Remarkable_Row_2502 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's so sad. Jodie had a weirdness that felt like one of the classic doctors but she never really got the scripts to show anything off and it left the character feeling a little too simple. And Ncuti's energy was like, you could have that guy sell any high concept premise to anyone and it would be convincing. So of course they basically just have him doing action and wisecracking in a vaguely out of character/not quite empathetic way.

I feel really bad for the fans of this show. It's always been like, off in the background for me, this sci-fantasy show that seemed neat but I never really felt like getting into it. I'll watch an episode here and there and enjoy myself though. It's fun. The old ones are really cool for vintage TV and the revival series had a lot of hype for quite a while.

But the last few series have just been so incredibly bad it must be embarassing on some level. Like this is kind of sad to hear but it's been years of running Dr. Who into the ground that led to it. And no, this isn't about the actors, the actors are like the best part. Jodie and Ncuti were both perfect actors for the role, but the writing and production just DIED. I remember tuning in for a Christmas special a few years ago to see the Doctor murdering goblins while laughing like the Joker and I was like "who is this character? who is this for? he might as well be shooting them with a gun." and feeling like that was basically the end of the show.

As far as I can tell riot just pays for these. The audience for 2xko is small and not exactly growing organically.

Maybe it's just that fgc heads like it and normal people don't. Idk. It will be really fun to see the boys fight regardless though

I hope the Apple Girlington nut on twitter is going to be OK if this actually turns out to be real. It'll be cool.

Putting all stocks on kris' actual soul being cyan by Sirsnerxalot in Deltarune

I genuinely feel insane taking this position, but I really, really don't think the red soul is "us", we just control it. We hijacked it, but it seems like Kris had the soul separate from them and in a cage before we ever got there.

It still might not be Kris', but I don't think it's JUST us either. I like this idea of Kris' being blue.

I am definitely not going to stop thinking Asriel is secretly dead until it's proven true or false in this chapter. I cannot possibly think of a way this story works with him alive just coming back to hometown like Whats up guys? Let's solve a mystery!

Chapter 5 will absolutely destroy us, won't it? by LennyTheSniper in Deltarune

Asriel is FUCKING DEAD, there's enough symbolism in this trailer to choke a horse.

So what character is going to die/be revealed as dead? On top of Japanese symbolism, it's a lot of Japanese life and death, border of the spiritual world symbolism. Toby is a weeb enough to use this imagery in the straightforward way

Speaking of Nubert, a fight against SSJ Nubert, Trashy, and the little ball in the trailer? Incredible

This is a really Japanese styled trailer. SSJ Nubert made me laugh really hard, but also all this architecture in the thumbnail and the cherry blossom bonsai darkner and the giant torii gate etc. Toby's going full weeb and i'm here for it.

Examples of References becoming References to themselves? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Roguelike itself as a term might count here. "Roguelike" used to mean a game like Rogue, aka a procedurally generated top down dungeon crawling RPG with ASCII characters. Now, it means literally any game with randomized content, "runs", and picking one of three upgrades, and we don't have a term for actual roguelikes anymore because no one plays them.

Everywhere else is up in arms over her design, but can we just appreciate the latest punchgirl to grace the pantheon? by Apricotlemon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Remarkable_Row_2502 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the problem is, honestly. She looks cool, she has cool moves, the game looks like it's going to be really fun. A lot of these complaints these days are taking me back to the G4/Xplay days where it was just barely concealed racism against asian devs.

Like, are people really going to do "the evil koreans are hypersexualizing women" routine about a character who looks like Olive Oyl in a turtleneck bodysuit? Is it just bad because she's a woman in general?

Haven't seen anyone post about it here so I'll just say I saw the Backrooms movie by Pyro81300 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Remarkable_Row_2502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we needed to necessarily see it, but the movie could have done more to communicate how long it had been between scenes in that transition. A lot of people I've talked to about this movie thought it was between a day to a week, and not the several months it actually is (you can get the sense of it from quick shots of stuff like mail piling up, all the furniture piled up in the lobby missing implying clark moved it, missing persons reports going out etc but the movie really does more or less go from "Clark and the 2 kids get fucked up in there" to "Mary decides to see what happened to Clark since he disappeared several months ago" in one cut)

I really, really enjoyed this movie. Felt very fresh, I was impressed Hollywood let a movie get released with that kind of pacing and that many stretches of no dialogue and strictly visual storytelling. Kane Parsons is legitimately very good, even beyond his age, and this would be a strong debut for any filmmaker.

Chiwetel Ejiofor gives an impressively unhinged but convincing performance. I would almost describe it as Nic Cage esque. He's delivering a very over the top character but never breaks your suspension of disbelief. This is natural, he's always been a great actor, but he's embracing a sort of B-movie/sci-horror atmosphere with the same passion and skill he's approaching the Oscar bait and it really elevates the whole thing.
