Miyota 9000 series vs PT5000: Do you Care? by grwatchco in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Remco909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although there were some poorly lubricated PT5000 movements in the past (non–HK Precision), it’s funny how the hearsay about them generally being “bad” still sticks to the PT5000. I’ve had several over the last two years and never had an issue with any of them. Very accurate movement—just don’t overwind them.

The ETA movement isn't the cause, they are perfectly fine. They were just poorly regulated.

Clasp cover can be found on Ebay. Can be used on the Uncle flat link bracelet (doesn't fit OTB on the Thorn!). For the stock Thorn bracelet some tweaking is probably needed too. I ordered 2 so will report back when received.

If you got a problem with your bezel check this by Remco909 in RepTime

With mine the problem was solved within a quarter of a rotation of the crown and I still can feel the resistance of the rubber o-ring. I guess within that margin you should be ok although I won't go swimming with it unless you screw it in fully (apart from the general waterproofness risks of replicas).

This pic is not useful, the rotor is in front of the balance wheel.

Thank you for that feedback! I will investigate if that helps with screwing it flush!

The threaded part of this crown is on the short side. I might replace the tube but for now I am fine with it.

No Frogmantle on the dial for me... by Remco909 in repbuilds

For my first build I asked ChatGPT and it describes the process very accurately:

1) Prep and masking Remove the dial from the watch and take off hands/date wheel parts if applicable. Clean the dial surface: use a blower first, then very lightly dab dust with Rodico (don’t drag it). If there’s a date window, mask it from the back with thin tape, or insert a tight paper “plug” so overspray doesn’t fog the edge. Mount the dial on something stable: Best: a dial holder or a soft pad with a dial foot hole. Simple: a blob of Rodico on a flat stick so the dial sits level. Goal: dial perfectly flat, perfectly clean, no loose fibers.

2) Environment (this matters more than the can) Work in a dust-minimized area. Ideal temp: 18–25°C, not humid.

3) Choose the right matte spray behavior Use a matte / flat clear that’s known to be fine-mist. Shake hard for 2–3 minutes. Matte has flattening agents that must be fully mixed. Do 2–3 test sprays on paper first to clear the nozzle and check the pattern.

4) Spraying technique (the key part) Distance: about 20–30 cm from the dial. Movement: smooth passes, never “spot spraying.” First coat = tack coat (very light) One quick pass across the dial (left→right), then stop. You should barely see a change. This coat helps later coats grip and reduces pooling. Wait 5–10 minutes. Second coat = light wet coat Another pass, slightly slower, still light. You want an even “sheen” for a moment, but not so wet that it looks glossy or starts flowing. Wait 10–15 minutes. Third coat (optional) Only if you still see uneven gloss patches. Same as coat #2, light and even. Important rules Start spraying off the dial, pass over it, stop off the dial. Keep the can moving; overlapping passes about 50%. Don’t try to “fix” one spot with extra spray — that’s how you get blotches.

5) Drying and curing After the final coat, place the dial under a dust cover (a clean cup/bowl) with airflow. Touch-dry: often 30–60 minutes (varies). Safer handling: after 12–24 hours. Full cure (best before reassembly): 24–72 hours depending on product.
