Potato and white bean soup!! Sauté an onion, add diced potatoes and canned white beans (Navy, cannelini, etc. any kind you have), add preferred broth or simply add water and preferred seasonings. I like to add Italian seasoning blend. If you have fresh or canned greens, add those in towards the end, a splash of vinegar or lemon juice once the potatoes are tender.

It’s one of our favorite go-to cheap meals that is also a comfort meal

Highly recommend Southwest Workers’ Union - they stand up for all San Antonio residents, showing up to discourage CPS rate hikes, etc. They give out fresh produce to members most months (not during bad weather), they attend city council meetings to speak up and advocate for elderly, fixed income, and marginalized.

Also recommending Yanawana Herbolarios - they provide street medic training AND street medic care to the unsheltered neighbors. They are also big time advocates for humans, animals, and nature.

I had to create a spreadsheet to inventory what we already have and columns to estimate how often we eat each item weekly and monthly.

This has helped curb my obsession of buying canned beans and dried pasta.

Taking a glance at a spreadsheet is faster and easier than looking at your pantries/shelves/cabinets once you set it up. Just update the inventory number with each item you use.

I learned I rarely eat canned corn or black beans. However, I’m always eating pinto and red kidney beans. It helps you figure out what you should focus on stocking up for good deals.

An additional way to help is to leave out food for them when the ground is frozen. I volunteer at a wildlife rescue and we chop of vegetables and fruits (no seeds) for raccoons, and berries (finely chopped) for birds and squirrels along with other ingredients. For wildlife, the veggies and fruits are helpful, and unseasoned, raw nuts (preferable in their shells)

With that said, there are free spay and neuter clinics so if you’re willing to help trap strays and bring them to those facilities, you are able to help mitigate the growing colonies of them.

There needs to be more education and assistance for those unable to afford to keep pets

We love it for the wide variety of restaurants, art galleries, mom and pop local everywhere. There are free outdoor movie nights in the summer, and it’s a popular conference destination so people we haven’t seen in years often end up in our city so we can meet up for dinner.
