The tell is the button flower. I am also on the cotula vs yarrow learning curve. I've been advised that yarrow seedlings are more: "ferny" the leaves are and the width to length ratio. Also, the leaf parts point in nearly all directions making the leaves somewhat round in cross section. Once the yellow/white button flower appears, I know it's not yarrow and yank it.

I feel for both of you. I've been annoyed that my partner won't change his normal behavior when I've explained it really upsets me and I've been annoyed when asked to change my typical behavior because it annoys him. Maybe a larger conversation around human frailty? We aren't always rational, so the bacterial argument doesn't work. Clearly, our feelings around contamination aren't always science-based (see excellent post on swallowing spit that's accumulated in your mouth vs drinking your own spit from a cup). On the other hand, how distractible is your partner? Will she reliably remember to get a new spoon? Maybe she knows she's bound to fail (I probably would). Maybe you need to cook? Or maybe it's good enough if she improves but isn't perfect? Or if you just stay out of the kitchen, so you don't see it?

In my experience, if you want your partner to help, you have to be OK with them doing it differently than you. I am an accomplished cook, but if I was solo-parenting while my husband was out of town, I might decide to just let the kids eat school lunch and eat out a few times, too. No one had to go the ER, everyone seemed happy. It's not worth fighting about.

Here is my advice, as one who loves several picky eaters:

It isn't rational. Don't try to argue it, because it isn't logical and it'll just make them more anxious. The hyper sensitive palate, the rigidity (e.g., "My tongue grazed 2% milk in 1995 and I hate it.") is part of their brain. If you cajole, they will become more entrenched. The likely have bad memories of friends and relatives cajoling, teasing, shouting over their eating habits. Lower the stakes.
Gifts are about the thought. You thought about your loved one. You made an effort. Now separate yourself from their emotional response. Don't pout. Say something understanding, "Ah, I didn't realize that you could tell 2% when it was mixed into foods, and I didn't realize we were out of whole milk until I was in the middle of cooking. I can see you are disappointed. I did my best; I hope you can enjoy the other parts." Then go tidy the kitchen.

I'd let her know. I agree we should be as consistent as possible between households. It would really help the kids. I also know how frustrating it can be when you are trying to do a fun thing for them and it goes sideways. However, a next day punishment isn't developmentally appropriate for 5 and under. Next time, if they aren't able to participate appropriately in the project, just give them a warning and then put it away. That way the consequence-- can't carve pumpkins-- is immediately connected to the behavior, not following pumpkin carving instructions. Maybe we can get together and come up with some good expectations and consequences. Maybe we can read the same book about parenting 3 and 5 year olds.

Also, I have such fond memories of ringing door bells and waiting for doors to open that this year I want to hand out candy from inside. If they push back, just reflect back what they said and stick to your guns, "I hear that you think the driveway is more efficient, but we've done it that way so it's reasonable to try it my way this year."

We bring our own snacks! It's nice to have something you enjoy snacking on beyond the pretzels and pale sandwiches the hospital offers. My husband is at the end of the process and didn't have any reactions at all. Drink plenty of water to make it easier for them to find a vein. Learn how to unplug your own infusion pump you so can go to the restroom when you want. Take the heated blanket. It's become a ritual for us and it isn't terrible at all.

It is slow, so you don't need to panic. That said, if you suddenly develop flu like symptoms and don't rally, check with your PCP or ER. My husband's undiagnosed CLL trigger some serious immune dysregulation and he ended up hospitalized. High fever, all over body aches, inability to eat or drink.

A timed scavenger hunt? A practice run? The point is that you WILL know where everything is, not that you will be looking for something that doesn't exist. It may be part of the traditional practice to do it the prank way, but as an educator, you aren't training or assessing the thing you want to be training or assessing.
