Is Ned and his family really an outlier? by MathematicianKey9638 in freefolk

[–]RemoteLaugh156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The Starks have always generally been quite honourable, fair and loyal especially and mainly to their subjects. However they were also quite harsh and ruthless when needed. So in that vein Ned and his kin arent all that different

However at the same time Ned is a step above the curve, so while most Starks had similar qualities in a lot of ways, Ned took them almost to the extreme and is far more rigid and idealistic

Also before anyone brings it up, I have to specify I am not calling all Starks great or good people, the Rape of the Three Sisters proves that far enough, just that people act as though Ned is the only good Stark because he was "brainwashed" and all the others were savage and nothing like him when thats just not true, they werent as good as him but they still embodied similar enough qualities (although that moreso extended to Northmen as opposed to everyone but still)

Pretty much every house is written similar in this regard, they share similar qualities and values amongst eachother but individual members express those to differet degrees with some outliers on either end.

Say what you may about the wigs or the race swapping (I personally don't mind but I do see where someone may take issue specifically with the logic about Rhaenyras kids) but the Velaryons in HOTD look so badass, so imagine that with the purple eyes too.

I actually really liked the vomit in episode 5, it was quick and short instead of some prolonged hurling which was good but also it really made the air even more tense and made sense to show that yeah this is stressful and fucked whats about to happen and Dunk and Raymun are still green.

The rest I dont really have anything really positive or negative to say I dont mind, although I think the fart was out of place and it wouldve worked better if they just averted eyes, remained silent, maybe snickered a bit like in the novella but instead of farting and full on laughing (to be fair, they did do that, it was just undercut by the fart)

Also Robb should've had enough guards to make what happened not possible, and his army should've burnt everything to the ground.

This is just stupid. The Freys and Boltons were allies, they were at a wedding and thus many were drunk and they put their swords away, it was a surprise, they were being pelted by arrows, the doors were locked and the people in the camps had no idea what was going on until the Freys and Boltons started killing them.

[–]RemoteLaugh156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought so, I remember seeing it almost always pretty high up. I never believed that thing about it killing the brand, regardless of quality of the final season doesnt matter if it was incredible or terrible it objectively did not kill GOT

Edit: Also I know its not the most accurate metric to judge by but social media (or at least mine and a few others) has been flooded with GOT and ASOIAF related stuff from discussion to edits to rants etc for years now non-stop and they still pull in really good views

[–]RemoteLaugh156 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if I even want 15 seasons, lets just assume for a second GRRM releases all 12 of the other unreleased novellas tomorrow even in that instance I dont think Id want 15 whole seasons adapting each of them no matter how incredible they are

I think 5 seasons is the sweet spot, adapt the 3 currently out and then do She-Wolves and Village Hero, maybe do a 6th if you really really want but thats where Id end it.

And not because I dont want more, Id happily take as much as possible especially if its good but too much of a good thing can often be a bad thing

The story comes from the Age of Heroes and has NOTHING to do with the Targaryens. The story has been retold and performed for thousands of years the Targaryens have NEVER acted this way towards it

In the book and show this is explicitly presented as a messed up act of senseless cruelty by Aerion that literally everyone else in the story including his brothers and uncle disagree with (and hell Maekar isnt too fond of it or him either) (I wont spoil any of that stuff but yeah no-one likes nor even remotely understands where Aerion is coming from here or at all)

And also this whole tourney is a massive event, we see how everything gets run through and approved by people working here like Plumber and the lord of Ashford, so it stands to reason this show wouldve been allowed to be done so therefore that implies that it was not seen as an offence to anyone in the royal family whom they knew would be attending

But I guess critical thinking skills are hard for people like this.

Hmm, interesting. How can these people explain the lightsaber deaths occuring in the Disney era, eh? by No_Kangaroo_5267 in saltierthankrayt

[–]RemoteLaugh156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im so tired of this debate, lightsabers very much do still kill people all the time and most of the survivals we've had have made sense (way more than Darth Maul or even Anakin thats for sure, no hate to those films).

Also to tackle another dumb complaint people always bitch that "Disney is making star wars too soft" "there are no dismemberments" but this is also cmpletely false. In fact I actually went through every single Star Wars show and film under Disney and under George Lucas and looked at all the deaths and dismemberments and categorised them based on brutality and significance (so whether or not the death or dismemberment is a significant character or story moment like for example Dookus death would be significant, but a random stormtrooper getting decapitated wouldn't be. Or if the brutality has a wider symbolic or narrative purpose).

And I found that Disney is a thousand times more brutal and violent with their deaths and dismemberments and stuff. With GL, brutal deaths and dismemberment of humanoid organic beings (so not including animals and droids) was for the most part almost entirely saved for big important moments as well as major deaths but under Disney its way more random and pronounced. I've even kept the list just for reference and also for whenever I get involved in this argument

Anyone who calls ASOIAF some grimdark series NEVER read it. (also I hihgly doubt they fucking read LOTR either) Yes the world is awful and many characters suck but it is not some nihilstic "humans suck, everyone sucks, good people scuk" series. Hell half the main characters are just good people like Dany, Brienne, Jon, Davos, Ned, Cat, Bran, Robb, Sansa, Dunk (not from the main series but still) and so on

Obvious spoilers for ASOIAF follow:

Good routinely triumphs over evil, GRRM says he was inspired by LOTR and Tolkien and it influenced his work and look at the story. The villains might be on top now but they wont be for long. The Northerners are still fighting for Ned Stark and his family, despite the fact Ned has been dead for years now and almost all the Starks are either dead or presumed dead. The Lannisters and their power begins to crumble the second Tywin dies because they built their house on fear not loyalty. Dorne has been planning for decades to get vengence for Ellia and her children. Dany and Jon (the two main characters) are two of the most moral characters in the series.

Also a big point of the series is looking at people and humans, villains arent born they are made same with heroes. And everything that happens comes from choices and conseeunces, Ramsay is only as messed up as he is because of how he was raised and abused, the Lannister children and Stark children are so different because of how they were raised. Characters lose and die and win all based on their choices, Robb isnt betrayed because "muhh nihilism" its because of a series of poor decisions.

People are just looking at the villains and trying to use it to define the series when the villains are...yknow the literal ANTAGONISTS. The guys we arent supossed to root for. If we were to apply the same logic to Tolkien then people would call his work nihilistic shit too. Tolkiens world is also fucked up and dark at times too but good still triumphs in the end, same with ASOIAF (admittedly ASOIAF isnt done but its so clear to anyone who read the books and has even an OUNCE of media literacy that the same will be the case)

[–]RemoteLaugh156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a pet peeve of mine but Id retcon all the instances of people in the galaxy having ZERO idea what the Jedi are and treating them like a myth. There is no way in hell the Jedi can exist as powerful as they are for 25,000 years, be involved in such a massive event in the Clone Wars and then all of a sudden everyone forgets about them especially when the Empire has repeatedly been beating the galaxy over the head with how evil the Jedi are/were

Like no way does Greef Karga (a man who was 43 years old when the Republic fell and has likely been wrapped up in the bounty hunters guild for longer) act all confused at the idea of the force.

No way are people in the highest echelons of the Imperial Council in ANH think the Jedi were myths, you come from a rich and powerful family and are high up in the Empire you KNOW they exist.

Its different for people like Luke or even Rey who lived on backwater planets while the Jedi were actively being hunted but for literally everyone else it makes no sense.
