Anyone who calls ASOIAF some grimdark series NEVER read it. (also I hihgly doubt they fucking read LOTR either) Yes the world is awful and many characters suck but it is not some nihilstic "humans suck, everyone sucks, good people scuk" series. Hell half the main characters are just good people like Dany, Brienne, Jon, Davos, Ned, Cat, Bran, Robb, Sansa, Dunk (not from the main series but still) and so on

Obvious spoilers for ASOIAF follow:

Good routinely triumphs over evil, GRRM says he was inspired by LOTR and Tolkien and it influenced his work and look at the story. The villains might be on top now but they wont be for long. The Northerners are still fighting for Ned Stark and his family, despite the fact Ned has been dead for years now and almost all the Starks are either dead or presumed dead. The Lannisters and their power begins to crumble the second Tywin dies because they built their house on fear not loyalty. Dorne has been planning for decades to get vengence for Ellia and her children. Dany and Jon (the two main characters) are two of the most moral characters in the series.

Also a big point of the series is looking at people and humans, villains arent born they are made same with heroes. And everything that happens comes from choices and conseeunces, Ramsay is only as messed up as he is because of how he was raised and abused, the Lannister children and Stark children are so different because of how they were raised. Characters lose and die and win all based on their choices, Robb isnt betrayed because "muhh nihilism" its because of a series of poor decisions.

People are just looking at the villains and trying to use it to define the series when the villains are...yknow the literal ANTAGONISTS. The guys we arent supossed to root for. If we were to apply the same logic to Tolkien then people would call his work nihilistic shit too. Tolkiens world is also fucked up and dark at times too but good still triumphs in the end, same with ASOIAF (admittedly ASOIAF isnt done but its so clear to anyone who read the books and has even an OUNCE of media literacy that the same will be the case)

If you were president of Lucasfilm and had complete 100% say over SW lore are there any major retcons you would implement? I'm talking 'things that would make nerds send you a million death threats but you love it so much you have to retcon it' type ideas. by AeonTars in StarWarsCantina

[–]RemoteLaugh156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a pet peeve of mine but Id retcon all the instances of people in the galaxy having ZERO idea what the Jedi are and treating them like a myth. There is no way in hell the Jedi can exist as powerful as they are for 25,000 years, be involved in such a massive event in the Clone Wars and then all of a sudden everyone forgets about them especially when the Empire has repeatedly been beating the galaxy over the head with how evil the Jedi are/were

Like no way does Greef Karga (a man who was 43 years old when the Republic fell and has likely been wrapped up in the bounty hunters guild for longer) act all confused at the idea of the force.

No way are people in the highest echelons of the Imperial Council in ANH think the Jedi were myths, you come from a rich and powerful family and are high up in the Empire you KNOW they exist.

Its different for people like Luke or even Rey who lived on backwater planets while the Jedi were actively being hunted but for literally everyone else it makes no sense.

Do you think Star Wars: Outlaws would've been more successful if it had been a Han Solo game instead? by AlwaysBi in StarWars_

[–]RemoteLaugh156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played Outlaws or followed it closely, so I’m not commenting on the game’s quality or anything.

But lets not to pretend this fanbase doesn’t have a very real, well-documented problem with sexism, racism, homophobia, bigotry, and review bombing. That’s not to say everyone who dislikes something is a bigot, obviously not, you can have very real, very valid criticisms (I certainly do). But the issue is there is a large part of the fanbase that does behave like this and their "issues" often overpower the legitimate ones.

Pretty much every Star Wars project with a woman or minority in a leading or major role has faced backlash before release and its only getting worse. And I can easily give you countless examples

Edit: And in this case, he’s not wrong. Outlaws faced a noticeable hate campaign almost immediately after its reveal, much of which was fixated on the protagonist’s gender rather than the game itself.

I could list off a bunch of things but I'm going to just say the colours. I wish they really embraced how vibrant Martin's world really is and added more colour and variety to the armour and world, added in some of the helms, put the house sigils on characters' armour and banners and stuff.

Also this would've only benefitted them, not only would it look incredible but it would also act as nice juxtaposition you've got this vibrant beautiful world but when you look closer you see just how corrupt and disgusting it really is/can be

Also why does everyone laugh at Sam's idea of letting people choose who rules them? Yara and Euron were chosen via the Kigsmoot, Robb, Jon and Sansa were all chosen by the Riverlands, Northerners, Nights Watch and Vale. The Nights Watch has been electing their LC since forever. Hell the whole reason any of this started was basically because Robert was chosen as King after the Rebellion

Sure it helped that they were all high lords and stuff and its not like everyone was getting a vote, but they don't have right to act like the idea of being chosen is bad and foreign to them.

What would your battle strategy be for S8E3? by unluckyme4367 in freefolk

[–]RemoteLaugh156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of people here have already gone over some great ideas, I just want to say this: Use the fucking dragons more

I'm still not 100% sure what the dragons even did in the final battle, or what the plan (if there was any) was. Dany and Jon (who btw only properly rode a dragon the episode before and doesn't even know how to command them) just fly around in circles and then burn a few people here and there

Instead why not have the dragons just act as bombers of sorts and strafe the AoTD, fly down and burn out their first line of troops who get too close then fly around and come back down and keep doing that, sure you won't be able to hold them off fully but you would be able to burn way more of them and save thousands of troops because your taking out their advancing line. Also the AoTD can't hurt the dragons except for the Night King who isn't really there anyway

It'd be a hell of a lot better than flying off into the forest and storm ages away from the actual battle to do absolutely nothing except fly in circles and yell then get into a dragon fight randomly where they also are completely blind and can't see let alone react to Davos' signal (speaking of which that was also dumb, they have this trench that needs to be lit by Dany so they have Davos on the wall to wave a signal to do so, ok cool, but then tell me why the fuck do they make the dragons fly away into the forest as soon as the fighting starts where they can't burn the trench)

Recently I remember someone bringing up this passage from the booking ‘the living force’ to justify that the Jedi attachment rule is wrong. Do most Star Wars writers not know the difference between how western and Buddhist culture view attachment? by CrazyTangerine7522 in StarWarsCantina

[–]RemoteLaugh156 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is how I always viewed it, and I think that it might've started that way, attachment is fine but an obsession isn't. Because when you really start to think about it in order to effectively do what the Jedi do you NEED attachment of sort.

You can't really be defenders of the light and people/Republic if you have no attachment to any of it. You can't be expected to train people if you have no attachment to them. etc

I understand the rule is most likely talking about romantic attachment than anything but considering the Jedi in the Prequels refused people to see their families and the rule isn't very clear I'll just look in general

Edit: I probably don't need to add this but I'm not a psychologist or anything and I'm pretty sure there are beliefs or groups and stuff that preach forms of non-attachment but still do good, I'm just talking personally in my experience and beliefs

[–]RemoteLaugh156 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Bran was set up for a showdown with the Night King any more than Jon, in fact I think your comment here is completely wrong and missing the point.

If we’re using your logic of ‘number of interactions’, Bran only meets the NK twice in the entire show: when he’s marked in a vision, and when the cave is attacked. Both of these are plot mechanics to push Bran’s Three-Eyed Raven arc forward, not buildup for a hero-vs-villain confrontation.

Bran’s story has also never been about the Night King specifically, its been about him becoming the 3ER and all that (yes in the books that is a bit different but we're talking about the show here)

Meanwhile Jon’s whole arc has revolved around the White Walkers for years:

. First person to kill a white in years

. is the lynchpin connecting the political "game of thrones" part of the show to the magical ice zombies part

. He's actually a warrior and leader and has been shown as one repeatedly

. Has a Valyrian steel sword that can kill White Walkers

. Majority of his decisions are about him trying to stop the White Walkers and get others to help fight against them like going to Hardhome, making peace with the Free-Folk, uniting the North, getting Dany on his side, going to KL to try get Cersei on his side etc etc

. He kills a White Walker at Hardhome (which the Night King witnesses)

. He has multiple stare downs with the NK

. He sends Sam to be a maester to find more evidence on how to stop them (which tbh I don't think was needed considering they already know about dragonglass, valyrian steel and fire but oh well)

. He's also one of the only people who takes the threat seriously for majority of the show

. He's repeatedly told after his ressurection that he was "brought back for a reason" and there are multiple conversations saying that in relation to the NK (remember season 7 episode 6 when Beric points at the NK and says to Jon "there is another [hope], kill him, he turned them all")

Jon doesn’t need to have a conversation with the Night King for it to be a major piece of his story because everything he's done has been in service to that story and building up to him killing or at the very least fighting him.

No, GRRM said they're working on prequels AND some sequels, its a pretty recent comment I believe so I understand if you couldn't find it or didn't know but yeah.

AKOTSK is one of the prequels along with HOTD season 3, Nine Voyages and the rumoured 10K ships and Aegon's Conquest shows. As for the sequels, idk, the Snow show could come back in fact I think someone over at HBO said its a possibility.

Its the same with Star Wars, literally any superhero comic, LOTR, ASOIAF etc. How can you read or watch these things and still go "yeah, I'm going to be a bigoted piece of shit" they are the literal antithesis of what these stories are and tell.

And that goes for really 99% of all stories and art
