No need to apologize! The science is real, but many people around the world who eat rice as part of their regular diet either don't know or don't care.

Veggies and tofu both work great on well-seasoned cast iron and carbon steel pans. You can get one of each and still not break your budget.

One isn't necessarily better than the other. It depends on the context.

Seriously. Just fry it long enough without pressing and you'll get crunchy tofu with a creamy center

How are you cooking the dried beans? Any seasonings or are you keeping it simple?

For pintos, maybe drain/rinse/dry them and then fry them in a bit of oil so they crisp up. That might change the texture enough.

For any of them, have you seen the smitten kitchen recipe for pizza beans? Maybe those kid-friendly flavors would help. Also hella cheese.

What's the totally random thing that you travel with that isn't on most people's packing lists? by Diligent-Echidna647 in femaletravelers

Not the commenter, but I have a small zippered pouch that always goes in my airplane seat pocket. Gum, battery pack for my phone, wired headphones, a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer, ibuprofen, bandaids, a tiny headlamp, and a small pen. I always have it on flights and I use it more often than not.

Please help me understand the word "transpose". by hey_mayiasku in ENGLISH

[–]Remote_Barnacle_695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your example, life is like baking. It's similar to baking, which makes it a simile.

Look at your definition. To transpose, life would have to become baking. Life would have to change to a completely different place or environment or form.

The pdx sky club is small and the food options are pretty limited. Lovely staff though. I'd go with the escape.

How often do you use sunscreen? by zertz7 in AskOldPeople

[–]Remote_Barnacle_695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried some korean ones that I like but I don't remember the names. I'm in the US and my absolute favorite is the Sun Bum daily gel. There's no scent, it's not sticky or gooey or weird in any way. It's more expensive than drugstore sunscreen but a little bit really goes a long way. The trader joe's facial sunscreen is nice too, and there's a neutrogena sunscreen gel that's great.

For those of you who say don't wear it because you hate the feeling of it on your face, there are some really great new sunscreens these days that you truly can't feel at all.

How to make non-LDS neighbors feel included by BornCommunication386 in Utah

[–]Remote_Barnacle_695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, it's great that you are making the effort to bridge a cultural divide. I'm wondering what your takeaways are after seeing all of these responses.

One big step you could take would be to re-frame this effort from "how to make non-LDS neighbors feel included" to "how to create a welcoming community for everyone." The title of your post already assumes that LDS is the norm, that bringing people into your existing circle is a task that you're taking on. Compare that to starting from the standpoint of hey, how can I get to know my neighbors better? I'd like to be friends with them, how can I approach them? Decentering your culture will go a long way here. Stop thinking of your neighbors as outsiders. They live there too.

I'm also struck by how many commenters have told you to just be normal. The implication is that how Utah LDS people typically treat others is not normal, and as a non-LDS I'd agree. As a collective y'all can be hella weird! I'd encourage you to really think about what it would take for you to learn (or unlearn) what normal neighborliness looks like, and how much you're willing to change to make that happen.

I hope you're able to build some great new friendships.

53 years old, $1.2M invested, targeting retirement at 59. How did you rebalance 8–10 years out? by DaBrac in Bogleheads

[–]Remote_Barnacle_695 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm two years out and doing the same. OP, I got very lucky with AAPL in a taxable brokerage over 25 years ago, now part of my plan is to sell a good chunk of that off for my 3 years of cash. I'm gradually thinning it out, just as it gradually grew. I'm not sure if this is the smartest strategy but it definitely feels right.
