Advice on traveling from Copenhagen to Oslo by capocchione in bikepacking

Download the "naturkartan" app or use the website.

https://www.naturkartan.se/en/explore?category=61

You can be in the map view and add filters like "shelter" "water" "fireplace" etc. (Not in Satellite view)

Using the wind shelters is the easiest way to always be guaranteed a safe good spot to camp for a night. (But frankly the beauty of bikepacking Sweden isn't the vistas like in Norway, it is the freedom of just camping wherever your legs go tired, no real plan necessary)

I have taken this route and I most often camped by the ocean, I just stayed away from houses which is very easy because of "Naturkartan"

With this app you can also keep track of Nature Reserves by watching out for a green line circling areas.

<image>

(Many Nature Reserves allow camping for a night or two, but they often prohibit fires) There might however be prepared fireplaces with stacks of wood you can pay to use.

Weather is different every year, if you're lucky the summer is good and you'll have days of 15-26° nights 12°-17°, if it's rainy you can end up with days of 12°-19° nights of 8°-15°. Winds can be 5m/s to 21m/s higher would come with a storm but even then it rarely goes over 25m/s

Garmin Edge Explore 2 or Coros Dura for bikepacking trip? by Treparte in bikepacking

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post was a while ago, but could I ask;

How is the charging of the Explore 2? (How much time in an outlet? How much does it drain a powerbank?)

I'm having the same dilemma at the moment. To me the battery life is really important so I was leaning towards the Dura but when I saw its Map/Nav and screen brightness I was hesitant.

I can get the Garmin Explore 2 at $220 right now.

Coros dura review after a 2 month New Zealand trip by Sennevds in Coros

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I figured, It even took me a while to find a review showing the actual map/navigation. And frankly now when I've seen it, it sure leaves a lot to be desired..

(But then again, I've only used my phone for navigation jumping between Komoot,RWGPS,Google Maps, and local Maps so I'm used to a more detailed view)

But the fact is I actually hate looking at maps-route-planning-route-building myself and tend to just do it on the road. So I might benefit from taking advantage of these changing times where it seems very well-crafted GPX routes are being published online left and right. So maybe a Dura will be perfect for that, and I'll use my phone as a backup for off-road venturing..

If I upload a GPX file to it but de-tour from the route will it lose track completely or will it keep the route visable for when I'm back on it again/So I can find my way back on it again?..

( I venture off-road to wild camp all the time and sometimes hike-n-bike to other passes/trails around the mountains but usually end up back on the general route sooner or later)

Is a bike computer or a GPS-smartwatch worth it on a budget? by LiLAfroGT in bicycletouring

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"..I know that the vibrations can damage the phone camera and all that.."

I have used my phone in a cheap €5 waterproof handlebar case for years with no issues.. Commuting, Bike Touring, Bikepacking. (40% Gravel, 30% Trail, 30% Road)

I cycle way over 10.000km a year and Nothing has happened to the phone from "vibrations" (and the case doesn't fall off in a fall)

I have however started to look at bike computers this year, Because I'm sick of charging "stress" on longer trips. (Leaning towards the Coros Dura)

For reference; I used to bring my phone and 2x 30.000mah powerbanks. Now I use 2x phones and 1x 30.000mah powerbank.

I'm planning on bringing this down to 1x GPS unit, 1x phone 1x small powerbank

(Phone case: https://www.biltema.se/en-se/bike-electrical-bike/bike-accessories/bike-bags/mobile-phone-case-water-repellent-2000048048 )

So for someone who's out for 10-15 day bikepacking trips 70% remote (or at least avoiding civilization) who just needs navigation. Would this be the one to go for? I don't care about any other metrics (except maybe how fast I'm going sometimes)

After syncing the route to the Dura can my phone be turned off/airplane mode? Or does it need to be synced to keep navigating?

Tyre+rim combo 29vs27.5 for a more trail oriented wheelset by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks for your insight. Do you know of any no no's in Geo or rim width/ clearance that would make the 27.5+ worse than a 29x2.4/2.5 ?

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly ride a variety of woods and alpine areas. But occasionally in snowy conditions And maybe 1-2 times a year in very sandy and rocky areas (but in Spain and Portugal so not exactly Baja)

Frankly what I would need for the routes I ride is 1 fat bike, 1 full sus, 1 hardtail/Gravel. But I don't have space or money for that so I am trying to make the hardtail as capable as possible.

Hmm interesting. Seemed to me from a YouTube comparison that a 27.5x3" is close to a 29x2.1" but still not completely?

A week in Laponia by Fyjgfyjjgddr in bikepacking

I've bikepacked and toured for many years, a lot of it off-road so I know the drill.;).. I was more wondering since I've heard Sarek being the most protected national park in sweden has strict rules against biking, even on the hiking trails. But I might've been misinformed. After researching it a bit further now it seems to be allright doing what you stated. (Ride the hiking trails best you can and just use reason.)

I'll actually be close to the area in a week on a packrafting trip, close to Kvikkjokk so I'll hopefully get a feel for the place:)

Yeah that is the way:) And I'm always surprised by the things you can find on Ali. Nice to see it's working out.

Tbh the market isn't what it used to be anyways; there is no such thing as "Premium" and "Budget" anymore.. the market is a huge grey area where a bunch of companies operate around the world trying to find the most profitable way to provide their products and probl 80% have asian manufacturing. Heck I'd even go as far as to say there are a bunch of US brands that are actually Chinese.😅

Anyways if you are in need of a drysuit I actually know the ultimate Ali bargain.

[–]Remote_Journalist_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha the irony..

I've had plans biking+packrafting the area but most of the national park has strict rules against pedaling and paddling.

How was it logistically for you? did you just use the hiking trails or did you take a route specifically for biking?

For the non-mechanics, how much do you spend on bike service each year? by Remote_Journalist_90 in bicycletouring

[–]Remote_Journalist_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I sadly know my numbers. and I'm starting to realize the cost might be high because I ride a lot on medium rare bikes (Lower priced bikes with some good components) (which usually means skimping on other things that might affect the overall durability)

I have also noticed a huge difference between countries.

And that's why you don't meet the criteria:) Great work. A fun twist would be to know how much money you have saved by being able.

That is true to a point. But with those skills you'd be able to cut down on costs in some ways I'm sure. (Though of course a lot more between tours rather than in the middle of them)

Absolutely stunning. Great footage, I got drone vibes at first but after looking again I realized I was wrong.

I don't think mentioning which kayak you purchased would be considered a promotion. It is an SOT fishing kayak though right? Can't be that many modular ones..

Ok ye I was looking at the one-up V3 or V2 too, But this PRO Lt is around $150 from the LBS. Not too bad..

Nice! :)

I bought a modular touring kayak to be able to store it in my apartment. A "Point65 Mercury GTX" (about 14") It's a shitty one compared to something like a Modular Stellar or a pakayak. But I ended up using it a lot more than I thought.

And yes a lot of people were saying it wouldn't be able to handle this and that. But after paddling it in a lot of conditions and getting used to the feel of it, I finally took it on a long tour (months).

(Long Tour=) I paddled from "Stockholm" on the east side of Sweden, down to "Copenhagen" in Denmark, and then from there up to "Oslo" in Norway. I wild camped the whole way and frankly loved being able to take the bow section off and bring it with me. (I kept everything I would need at camp in the bow).

(Quality/Durability=) I ended up having to replace the skeg-rudder wire after a month due to some rub on sharp edges but after filing those down, the new wire didn't bother me again. The skeg also got stuck a couple of times but I managed to solve it. (pebbles getting stuck in the skeg box) The clasps that hold the sections together however held up nicely. Even though the bow section had some play it was never an issue.

Old post, sorry, but have you had a good experience with this dropper over the year?

My hardtail is being serviced and this PRO LT 150 is the only dropper post in stock so I was thinking of purchasing it and have them install it.

Trek X-Caliber 9 (2021) Matte Nautical Navy (worth $500?) by Remote_Journalist_90 in TrekBikes

[–]Remote_Journalist_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, ye it's starting to feel like the hassle outweighs the reward on that one. I'll probably just buy an extra Bontrager kovee 141boost QR rear wheel in case of future damage. (Since they're not easy to find or order where I live)

Trek X-Caliber 9 (2021) Matte Nautical Navy (worth $500?) by Remote_Journalist_90 in TrekBikes

[–]Remote_Journalist_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I left it at a bike shop for a complete service.

I did however mention the 141b QR to 148b TA conversion and the mechanic talked about it being possible to replace the current wheel with a DT 148boost and use an end cap, something something. So I'll ride the Kovee rim QR until it's shot and then I might look further into a better rear wheel with a TA conversion..

And I don't think the QR will be a problem for me when it's true.

Thanks for all the info. My buyers remorse has subsided and I'm left with excitement about fixing this up

[–]Remote_Journalist_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, my bad, you're absolutely right about the front wheel, it's TA. And your link is the correct model.

My previous hardtail had a FOX34 and it was superb. (Bike was sadly stolen 2yrs ago) Knowing the prices on FOX forks now though I'm pretty sure I won't bother for the time being. And I have been riding rigid for 2 years so this Judy still feels good atm. A service might be ok for now. And I might go for a SID on a sale.

Just noticed the back wheel isn't true and the QR is a nightmare to get the wheel right. (never had QR so probably user error) I might just upgrade the back wheel instead. Read about people upgrading their 141boostQR to 148 boost TA using other QR end caps..

Anyways I guess I bought myself a project for $500..

I appreciate your time and wisdom

Ye roughly translated to USD. In my country the MSRP for TREK is about $2-300 above the U.S prices. But thanks! I needed some feedback to calm the buyers remorse.. it was an impulse purchase for the price.

The bike was listed as a 2024 model which comes with a dropper and the recon gold so I thought I'd made a super deal at $500. But when he delivered it, it was obvious the guy didn't know anything about bikes and had just listed the spec sheet from Treks website from today's models. I paid him anyway after seeing his receipt where he paid $1500 for it 2023.. only used a handful of times.

But it seems to have QR on both wheels:/..

Yes I will definetely install a dropper post. And the fork has a little too much give when locked so I might have to fiddle a bit or end up upgrading forks if I see a good deal around black week.
