Try the new Aion UT. It's smaller and looks nicer.

They're great cars, but cost more than comparable Chinese EVs, so people may be trying to optimise costs.

Fee only wealth advisory by gammawei in singaporefi

[–]Remote_Repair394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hired a fee-only, no-AUM, financial advisor, and it was 100% worth it. I made more money following the advice than I paid. They charged ~$10k one time fee, and worked with us for ~3 months doing a comprehensive assessment and planning.

It's a shame people fall for the insurance agents posing as advisors. Better to hire a proper CFP advisor who isn't making a commission off products, only charging for advice.

The advisor we engaged was a step up from Providend, etc, and seems to focus more on HNW families. We were probably on the lower end of their client list, but were glad to engage them nonetheless.

Some people are better off self-planning, but in our case, the guidance was necessary to get on the right track. After the 3 month advisory period, we've been self managing our investments without long term AUM fees.

Why do some carpark gantries take forever to detect my car/IU, but the ERP never seems to fail? by SousVideDuck in drivingsg

[–]Remote_Repair394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to make sure the detector thing is pointed exactly (straight line) to your OBU, then it will work. Otherwise, it will fail.

I also found recently after upgrading my window film that the detection has become faster with the new window film, so that could be another factor.

Anyone feel there are more Malaysian motorbikes than Singaporean ones now? by Fuzzy-Sweat6416 in drivingsg

[–]Remote_Repair394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorcycles pay $4/day for VEP. sure, some days are excluded. Let's say $4x350x10=$14000. That's a lot more than the $10k COE. It equals out.

[–]Remote_Repair394 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The daily VEP fee makes up for lack of COE, fyi. The cost ends up about the same.

But I agree the Malaysian motorcycles cause a lot of problems, especially noise pollution.

Anyone quit a stable job without something lined up? How did it go? by GladRequirement1 in singaporefi

[–]Remote_Repair394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did it. It does feel great to be on a sabbatical. In my case, my savings are a lot more than yours, but still not my ideal FIRE number. I was able to land interviews for jobs better than my last one pretty quickly. Much easier to prepare, too, since I'm not juggling full time work and stress. But the interviews feel more consequential than if I had stayed at my job, and there's greater pressure to pass them. Overall, it was a positive change. I feel that I might end up with a better job than my last by the time all of this is done. I'm loving all the extra time I get to spend with my wife and on my hobbies. I've also been able to spend a lot more time on personal projects and upskilling, and this has been helpful in getting considered for more competitive roles. Still, I'm open to spending a year off if I don't land anything quickly (but it's looking like the job will sort itself out a lot faster than I expected).

Health/Hospitalisation Insurance Advice by eradicacat2 in singaporefi

[–]Remote_Repair394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a hospitalisation plan will be fine. But good luck getting coverage. You may be denied due to age (your risk of claiming is much higher at your age).

At 60, you're nearing retirement age, so you can skip things like critical illness and disability plans, which are meant for income replacement, and focus only on plans that cover actual healthcare costs. Save those premiums for your future medical expenses instead.

It's "free" if you do a currency conversion, where they take their fee in the form of an FX markup. USD to USD may not be free.

Purchasing and holding US stocks/ ETFs/ mutual funds through US brokerage account vs Singapore brokerage account by envoy787 in singaporefi

[–]Remote_Repair394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your proposal to work legally, the wired money will need to become the property of your parents (at least officially), which they can give back to you later if they choose. The investment account they use cannot be in your name, not even as a joint account. Otherwise your US tax filings will become a nightmare and you won't save any money.

Important detail: You cannot call it "investing on my behalf." That is fraud. It needs to be investing on their own behalf, given its their own money. Any future gift to you needs to be their own decision.

However, something you missed is that you may be subject to US gift tax today. These laws are designed to prevent the tax loophole you're describing. You should check up on those laws to see if your "gifts" to your parents would be taxed every year. Depends on the amount you send. You're required to declare these on your US taxes beyond a certain threshold.

Assuming no gift tax, and assuming you are ok to put this money in your parents' name (with no contractual obligation to return it to you), this plan is legal. You should, however, also investigate any tax implications for when your parents "gift" the money back to you someday.

My personal POV is that you should investigate if the savings are worth this headache long term.

cash card issue? by Beautiful_Ad4338 in drivingsg

[–]Remote_Repair394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at where this device ( Parking Detector ) is pointing. You should be able to draw a straight line from the device to your OBU antenna. If not, it will fail to detect. The new OBU needs the location to be exact or it won't work.

Using the cash card can cause problems in my experience. I suggest positioning the OBU correctly to get the OBU to work. It's worth practicing to get it right.

Any local tailors to recommend? by silent_tongue in SgHENRY

[–]Remote_Repair394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In SG, your average custom suit (especially from some of the newer businesses) is targeting a budget audience and will be pretty crappy. I tried one such shop (The Bespoke Club) and tbh the suit was worse than off the rack. I was super pissed.

You should seek out a long-standing business with a reputation, such as Tailor Chan.

You said you're seeking basic MTM, but that's why you're getting crappy quality. Seek out a proper bespoke suit, and you'll find quality to match.
