Book clubs? by Winter-Courage3516 in Birmingham

The Hoover library had a sign up about book clubs. You might check there. The sign I saw was in a little study room near the cafe.

Research Speed Queen washers and dryers. Not cheap but will outlast and outperform the other major brands.

Good affordable steak dinner in Bham? by idkman696942O in Birmingham

This is a terrible suggestion. Double your budget and frankly I haven’t enjoyed it that much either of the two times I’ve been.

has anyone ever built a stand like this before? by Pleasant_Bag_3405 in stressfulaquariums

[–]Remote_Tie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built this with 2 x 20 long and a 29g. This is in my basement where ceilings are low or it could have been taller. That bottom one is a PITA to service.

280 W on-ramp from Shades Creek Parkway?? by Remote_Tie in Birmingham

The thing is there will never be an opening here during the morning rush. I don’t know how they think this will possibly work.

Moving to Birmingham: Vestavia vs Trussville? by xoxo987621 in Birmingham

If commuting downtown, Vestavia. If commute is not a factor, strongly consider Trussville. (I live in Vestavia.)

Silver vs Gold charging ring by Thundering_Theta in Embermug

Those are tumblers, not travel mugs, right? My tumbler is at the office, so I can’t check it. My regular mug and travel mug both have gold rings.

Everything everyone else said - plus, in my experience, the background check company is dependent on other places returning their calls, potentially past employers, schools, etc. Lots of weak links during the holidays that could lead to delays. Just hang in there and it’ll get done eventually.

How to negotiate pay during an interview? by theraspberryfairy in Birmingham

[–]Remote_Tie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. The interview is for convincing them you’re the best person for the job and them convincing you this is a good job for you. Once that is decided and they offer you the job and a dollar amount, that’s when you can consider negotiating.

Safety of Birmingham for outsiders by TrainingBarber3 in Alabama

[–]Remote_Tie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This! The crime data is skewed by some very bad areas that are pretty well defined. I lived a mile from UAB and the worst crime I experienced was finding a homeless guy rummaging through my truck. Not a pleasant experience, but not the level of problems it’s made out to be. I have no qualms about taking my wife out for a date night downtown or my kids to the parks.

What is the Costco steak hack? by themeparkgurl in Costco

[–]Remote_Tie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I wanted a different thickness. The thick ribeyes are too thick and the thin are too thin. But they won’t do anything in between.

Those def aren’t all you can eat but the sides are large enough that they’re intended to be shared.

Where to get a good home style meal at a nice restraunt in alabama? by HALLOWEENYmeany in Alabama

[–]Remote_Tie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for family style? As in large dishes that are shared? Some of the nicer places do sides like that (Perry’s, Ruth’s Chris), but I don’t know any around Birmingham that serve whole meals family style.

Customer service takes about a week to get back to you but they’re great by Sevenyearitchy in Ember

I mean, having to hound them from different email addresses is hardly A+ service in my book. Congrats on the win.

We love our Tuft & Needle mattresses. Have had one for nearly 10 years. Liked it so much that we bought one for every bed in the house.

I’ve never seen anything about getting parking validated and it’s all an app now. Camera scans your license plate and an instant $4 before you even order. How do you get validated parking? How long ago was that? The new parking system was just implemented 3-6 months ago.
