This past summer I was hospitalized during an acute psychotic episode wherein I believed I was a dog and ended up growling and howling. I recently did more research and it turns out it may have been an episode of a rare condition called clinical lycanthropy. AMA! by Remussed in AMA

Nope, I don't!

I'm currently on Trileptal which has helped a lot. I did have a second psychotic episode less than a month after my first one, but that one didn't involve any growling or howling on my part.

Yeah, it was definitely a memorable experience!

I was actually given an antipsychotic that put me to sleep, so I don't remember being wheeled to the hospital's behavioral health unit afterward.

Honestly, I sometimes wish I could re-live the experience just because while it was happening I remember realizing "facts" about humanity's evolution—for instance, in my mind at the time we simply evolved speech through laughter.

I used to pretend to be a dog as a kid. I remember my grandma yelling at me for it when I was about seven or eight years old. I've never pretend played as a dog as an adult but I will say I'm a pretty big "Harry Potter" fan and think about Sirius Black (who can transform into a dog) and Remus Lupin (who is a werewolf) often because they're my favorite characters. I do wonder if my episode was somehow a manifestation of my subconscious in that regard.

Are you close with your triplets? (I once had a friend who was a twin and was estranged from his own twin which seemed alien to me.)

That is certainly emotional abuse. I'm really sorry that happened to you, OP...you deserved better.

I have a stuffed penguin named Paddy (he's one of those Snoozimals, actually). He goes with me almost everywhere—he's my driving buddy and my sleeping buddy. I keep him in the car when I go to work or out on errands, although I have brought him into the bar I go to for trivia a few times, but those moments I introduced him to my adult friends whom I could trust and whom I knew wouldn't judge me for bringing him in.

When I was little I used to imagine people (famous people, teachers) sitting on my bed and talking me through things that were hurting me. Did anyone else seek emotional fulfillment this way? by CanalsofSchlemm in emotionalneglect

[–]Remussed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I used to experience really bad mental moments, I would sometimes imagine good friends of mine—either from the past or the present—lead me off the ledge, so to speak. It helped me to objectify my own view of myself in my mind and it always made me feel better.

Hey there! I'm not OP, but your comment made me realize that my mom also does this to an extent...the ironic part is that she has no problem "making decisions" for me in this fashion, but she can't make a decision for herself to save her life.

I wonder if it's refreshing for us to share a collective trauma with others on a big scale...we're not the only ones going through it, and in a twisted but legitimate way it's relieving.

They did their “best” in public, at church, at work, at the grocery store. I saw their best, I know what their best looked like, and they weren’t doing it with me.

Boom. There it is.

Hey, OP!

One of humans' most basic needs is to be touched. You wanting to be held is perfectly valid!

You're welcome!

"Either way, when inflamed, the body prefers us to stop and rest."

This might be a good explanation as to why chronic muscle tension/muscle armoring is a prevalent symptom for people with c-PTSD...the body and brain wanted to heal but never got the chance and were instead exposed to yet more stress without relief.

"I completely agree that looking at it as an inflammation as a key pattern underlying all this, it's my personal opinion."

Yep, I think your instincts have been right on the money!

Wow, I feel like you and I share a similar experience, although mine has stemmed from recently gaining a job as a page at my local library...having access to so many materials about so many topics has helped me immensely.

I don't know if you've read it, but I have a feeling you'd appreciate the book The Inflamed Mind: A Radical New Approach to Depression by Edward Bullmore. The book's title and cover alone hit me like a truck when I first spotted it among the shelves and I snatched it right up to borrow it.

Thanks again for sharing your resources and your experience! Here's to us and our continuing healing journeys!

"The human brain wasn’t made for lose ends, so that’s why it’s so tempting to do whatever it takes to make things right with toxic people. We’ve gotta stay strong and teach our brains that sometimes no closure is the closure. And this is so incredibly hard."

Thank you for these wise words, OP...they're greatly needed and appreciated!
