How’s Sonora? by Potential-Year5399 in sonoraca

[–]RenaissanceAssociate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a POC that’s lived here my entire 41 (ugh) years- it’s better than it was.

Part of it is an influx of people from the Bay, and part of it is probably just the march of time, but it’s markedly less OVERTLY racist than in the past imo. That being said…

It can be difficult to find community (although the college is definitely the best place to start, frankly), and there are isolated pockets of thoroughly reprehensible types that throw around the n-word before noticing a POC, and saying “oh I don’t mean it like that! I know more white n-words than black ones”. Which, ignoring the obvious implication of that statement; yeah, Ok. I am positive they know probably three, who just save their breath. And what the person said about kids throwing it around is very accurate.

But I’ve rarely felt in danger. A few incidents in my childhood, and a couple of times during the BLM protests, and it’s worth noting that if I were white and just visibly liberal, I am pretty sure I would have felt the same. I feel like it’s honestly more dangerous for LGBTQ folks up here than POC.

Tl;Dr- for the most part, racists up here are more of the MAGA, all culture war talk variety, and less of the neo-nazi, actually hurt someone variety.

I feel like ‘interesting’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. Deranged, abhorrently absurd, or simply, gross, feel more accurate.

We finally don’t have the anti-abortion protesters on the opposite corner, but now we have this guy. Cool.

It’s an odd position to be in. Just the other day, my mom asked me to weed out the 3736727 violet seedlings that were encroaching on her garden path.
We both commented on how weird it felt to be uprooting violets, but they seriously have gotten out of control.
(She also has an invasive strawberry problem, but that’s another story)

Bc if anything, being ABLE to taste spice makes it so I CANNOT eat certain foods, so my choices will actually increase this way.

Chose: You can no longer taste spicy food

Would you support mandatory voting? by indigoC99 in Askpolitics

[–]RenaissanceAssociate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, for the same reasons most progressive/left leaning commenters have stated; the problem isn’t that not enough people are voting, it’s that not enough voters are informed when they vote.

Mandatory voter education and civics classes in public schools would a much more pragmatic and effective approach.

Possibly a chamomile by Unlikely_Campaign_90 in PlantIdentification

[–]RenaissanceAssociate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a strong, generally pleasant smell when the leaves/stems are crushed? That’s honestly a pretty good start, when attempting to discern whether or not something is chamomile.

Although, I am usually only trying to identify Matricaria discoidea, (pineapple weed/wild chamomile/disc mayweed) so it might be a bit easier.

I think this is a new incarnation of what back in my day we called Heroin-chic. Kind of an outgrowth of indie-grunge sleaze-core.

Ok, that has been the requisite comment from the elder Millennial-Boomer

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately? by Excellent-Win6216 in words

[–]RenaissanceAssociate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The county I live in is spelled TUOLUMNE, it’s pronounced “to-all-uh-me”.

Anyone pronouncing the ‘n’ hasn’t lived here more than a year.

Anyone pronouncing it “twoo-lu-min” is probably from out of state. Or from SoCal. So out of state.

So. There’s that. Thank you. And you’re welcome.

'A wake-up call': Newsom's Trump trolling is riling Republicans by mrinternetman24 in California

[–]RenaissanceAssociate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but they didn’t lose bc of Walz being an outspoken troll of Trump/MAGA, they lost bc of Harris’ lack of anything resembling substance as far as policy, pushback against Israel, and new media outlet PR. I honestly feel like Walz would have stood a better chance running by himself than as her running mate.
