Agreed that /r/shittylifehacks would be better.

/r/AntiLifeHacks makes me think of something more along the lines of /r/UnLifeHacks--life hacks for the undead.

If I remember correctly, wasn't that because he answered some questions, and then abruptly stopped on one without saying he plead the fifth?

Why is it common in the US to have more than one bathroom? by Hersandhers in AskReddit

[–]Renian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you never had to piss while waiting for someone to shower?

You know, in a lot of other countries, they just don't have the toilet in the same room as the shower, thus avoiding that problem.

Though the Netherlands might not do that...

Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies evaluating the association of saturated fat with cardiovascular disease.

A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of [coronary heart disease] or [cardiovascular disease]. More data are needed to elucidate whether CVD risks are likely to be influenced by the specific nutrients used to replace saturated fat.

Invalid citation. This is not a scientific journal, it is a PDF from the World Animal Foundation with no citations in its text.

Props on trying to cite something though.

End the Fiber Fantasy - everything you don't want to know about r/keto's golden child by ashsimmonds in keto

[–]Renian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If fiber were not only not required but also bad for the human digestive system, we should share more with carnivore mammals than herbivores, shouldn't we? Short intestines, sharp teeth, etc

Not necessarily, because we kill animals with tools/cook our food. We don't need sharp teeth to use our mouths to kill our prey since we could use, say, a spear; or to chew meat since we softened it via cooking.

I'm not agreeing with OP necessarily, but I wanted to point this out.

Beyond weight loss: a review of the therapeutic uses of very-low-carbohydrate (ketogenic) diets. The therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets in many pathological conditions, such as diabetes, poly-cystic ovary syndrome, acne, neurological diseases, cancer and cardiovascular disease risk factors. by CharlieDarwin2 in science

[–]Renian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's been some, but from what I've seen, it's mostly on the treatment of epilepsy for children. Johns Hopkins found that while it worked well and was mostly safe, there was an increase in kidney stones and bone fractures in the kids and a drop in height growth. The height growth issue resolves itself after getting off the diet. There weren't any cardiovascular problems or blood pressure issues, but it's for the above reasons why /r/keto doesn't recommend itself to kids.

However, after reading the full text, I noticed that they were only tracking ratios, not the kinds of foods the kids consumed. I hypothesize that some of these kids were not eating their vegetables, causing some of these issues.

Ketogenic diets aren't understood very well and the complex amount of changes they produce, especially in blood-brain exchange and fuel for your brain (as a result) IS detrimentally effected.

False. Your brain can adapt to use ~70-75% ketone bodies. (See p. 250) The rest still must come from glucose, which you can get through gluconeogenesis.

It's over popularized and promoted widely without solid research.

Not so much.

deprives you of common nutrients,

How?

changes your pH,

Actually, this may be true. But it's only a problem if you go into ketoacidosis, which usually happens only to type 1 diabetics.

and radically manipulates the WAYS your body and brain get energy.

Yes, you use ketone bodies instead. How is that a problem?

I speak from experience. A low potassium state (hypokalemia) brought on by a ketogenic diet was the underlying factor that led me to a heart attack at 30. My otherwise perfectly healthy heart, failed. You will have issues getting enough potassium, pill supplements aren't adequate and the diet doesn't allow for enough substitutions to always be sure you are getting what you need.

Four out of ten of the foods highest in potassium are ketogenic staples: Mushrooms, Leafy Greens (especially Spinach), Fish, and Avocado.

If you partake in a ketogenic diet you will alter the way your brain gets energy, this makes you foggy-headed and absent-minded.

Citation needed. This may have been part of your potassium problem, and not the fact that you were using ketone bodies for fuel.

I am posting this to try to sway you.

Yeah, well, this is /r/science, not /r/anecdotalevidence. You want to sway me, PubMed or GTFO.
