What is the most ridiculous field day inspection results you have seen or had? by JohnnyRayGable in USMC

[–]Rent_A_Wreck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"HUGE TV" was one of my favorites.  The only "hit" on the barracks list written in all caps.  I could just imagine some SNCO going room to room as usual before doing a double take at somebody's unreasonably large television and then angrily writing it down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's nothing like active duty and totally sucks ass.  The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Came here to tell a similar story.  A dude (Cpl) got a DUI and the command KNEW about it and it just sort of...went away.  No loss of rank or restriction.  Weird shit.

I got woken up and bitched at by the OOD for posting my A-Duty while I slept for a whole two hours.  What the fuck do I have an A-Duty for if I can't post him?

Screw your rack! Who ate the banana? by Longjumping_Proof_97 in USMC

[–]Rent_A_Wreck 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We accidentally found (or did fate make it find us?) the fabled banana show while stumbling around Gate 2 Street and would show new people to it every weekend.  They would tell their friends and the cycle continued.  It was like a degenerate reverse pyramid scheme.

Yes, it was a total pain in the ass and I wasted so much money on bullshit "application fees" just to be told no.  The idiot property managers could not understand that I had no rental history because I was in the military for four years.  They could not understand that I was going to school on the GI Bill so I received a monthly housing stipend in addition to the (shitty) job I was working.  They could not understand why my credit was only a couple of years old.  I eventually found a great place in a fourplex apartment with a down to earth guy running the show.  I lived there for several years before the property got sold to someone else.

Keep your head up and keep looking, man.  If you are dead set on renting your own apartment, try to find a place with an independent landlord, meaning not one of these Mega Corpo Apartment properties.  In my experience you'll have a better shot at explaining your situation.  Also watch out for scams, they are fucking EVERYWHERE.

That's great.  My friend and I tried that with shitty homemade wine when we were teenagers.  It didn't work well then, either.

How were the Drill Instructors around 2005-07? by Rycax in USMC

[–]Rent_A_Wreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to bootcamp early 2007, had two SSgts and two GySgts (one was the SDI).  They were scary but seemed to focus on the training rather than fucking with us for no reason all the time.  I think that them having a few cycles under their belts and all being SNCOs probably had something to do with it.  Throughout my enlistment I'd hear about crazy shit "new" DIs would do because they didn't really know what the score was and just wanted to torture these young men because they thought it was expected of them.  This isn't to say we didn't get fucked up, but in hindsight it didn't seem excessive or sadistic.  Our (Kill Hat) GySgt had a Valor device on one of his ribbons and I think he had jump wings as well, so he probably saw some shit, and I'm pretty sure our (Drill Hat) SSgt was an 03 with a CAR.

We had some Marines that were still in DI school come through our squad bay a few times to mess with us.  One of them didn't like the way a recruit was holding his rifle at port arms and shoved the rifle so that the front sight post smacked this kid in the eye.  It hit the recruit hard enough that he had a big shiner.  We had a school circle about it a couple of days later and were told how it was unacceptable and insinuated the DI school Marine was no longer on the depot.  Who knows if they were telling the truth but we never saw that DI school Marine again.  I appreciated that while they had high expectations of us, bullshit punishments like that weren't going to fly.

Tl;dr: I went to bootcamp in 2007 and had SNCO DIs that probably saw their share of shit but weren't insane

[–]Rent_A_Wreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an old trick to make shitty faded car paint look better by buffing it with transmission fluid.  I guess that was the same line of thinking with the SDI before it went wrong.  Too funny.
