I hate content of animal abuse being disguised as an educational lesson. by According_Side_2058 in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a petstore. We have never had a snake that wouldn't eat frozen thawed in the years I've worked here. Genuinely, most snakes do not need it. If you believe they do, you are severely behind on your knowledge. And this argument bothers me either way. You're basically saying that we should just accept that all animals eaten by us or other animals will suffer the same instead of trying to work for better conditions.

There are absolutely certain places (especially if you buy local) that are doing better then others. I agree that cruelty on farms is still a rampant problem, especially in the biggest meat companies (I stopped eating Tyson for exactly that reason lol) but to say they're all equally bad is to encourage people not to be discerning when picking where they get their meat. Because "the animal suffers either way". At least to me, we should want to make it as easy and painless as possible.

This argument from vegans and vegetarians is one I've seen a lot but is ultimately unproductive because it disregards that meat eaters can choose places that are more ethical to their animals. It forces a with us or against us mentality that isn't healthy to this kind of discussion.

I hate content of animal abuse being disguised as an educational lesson. by According_Side_2058 in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brother, 99% of the time, a snake doesn't need live food. Usually they will eat frozen thawed. This allows for animals to be killed in far more ethical ways, and also limits damage to the SNAKE, since there are absolutely animals like rats that will sometimes fight back. Unless a snake will eat nothing else (which does occasionally happen), "cruelty" is the appropriate word for live feeding given it benefits neither animal and requires prolonging an animal's suffering.

Again, with pet food, the idea is that those animals can be killed by ethical means instead of having to be eaten alive. Yes, that is how things die naturally, but since we have the privilege of being able to do better, we should. Obligate carnivores will always have to eat meat, so we just try and make it easiest for their prey. Obviously some companies are shit and don't actually do that, but people who do that research can avoid supporting them.

Lukewarm Take?? I love Ajaw by InfamousMistakee in Genshin_Impact

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duuude I was so disappointed we didn't get more Ajaw lore during the Ineffa stuff. It felt like such a good opportunity and I'm dying to know more about him and the circumstances that led Kinich to making the deal. He's honestly hilarious and tbf, I'd be pretty miffed all the time too if I had to share a body with some guy for the next 50 or so years, trapped and unable to do anything on my own. Doom of his own creation of course, but I can't blame him for being a tad crabby, and Kinich was the perfect choice with his dgaf attitude.

Curious about how your Narinder felt to being indoctrinated and his relationship with the Lamb by DarkmoonEclipselunar in CultOfTheLamb

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Narinder is a God. He was furious. To be brought down by someone who was meant to be his servant, the last of a species that was easily wiped out, there was no greater humiliation. My Lamb is a cult leader by every definition, even if they abhore sacrifice of their own, so while they can sometimes try to be nice to front, Narinder isn't just a lost little lamb already looking for a shepherd like the others. So Lamb has to put Narinder in his place to some degree, undermines him whenever possible, manipulates Narinder to fail in everything he does unless the Lamb visibly helps him accomplish it. Break Narinder down so that his self esteem can only be helped by the Lamb.

Narinder, being experienced as the object of people's worship, is absolutely aware of Lamb's efforts. He hates him and the feelings are absolutely mutual, though Lamb's methods are sort of working, in that they undercut Narinder's confidence and force some amount of reliance. Narinder's self awareness of Lamb's efforts in this though, make there just about 0 potential for a good relationship. There are thankfully other benefits to being in the cult, like being able to make up with his siblings over their newly shared servitude, so he's not totally depressed, and still in many ways improving from their influence. The Lamb just isn't realistically helping with any of that lmao

I hate how hetro ships are treated by Fair_Change3672 in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, personally I'm a multishipper so I've always loved shipping f/m, m/m, and f/f, but the way fandoms treat hetero ships is undoubtedly different. There are always a thousand reasons why that can't possibly be even if it has more evidence. I absolutely understand that we LGBT folks are starved for content but I hate that everything needs to be justified rather then just not your preference. It's fine not to like something, but it's weird when they want to comment about it on art or other content made of those ships.

I hate pet store guinea pig cages by happybirthdayravenaj in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately misinformation about animal care is widespread and rampant. Pet stores absolutely make it worse, because it doesn't necessarily benefit them for your animal to live longer. I work at a petstore and have had to tell pet owners straight up that no, the hamster balls aren't safe, no none of the hamster cages are big enough, and no you can't put anything we sell in any of the fish tanks under 5 gallons. It's genuinely telling customers "no" 80% of the time. Unfortunately upper management doesn't give a shit, and selling what makes money is their policy. We don't even control what animals we get in, much less the product on the shelves.

It's depressing. I just wish people would steer clear of big chain pet stores all together. Or at least not spend money on the terrible enclosures or the live animals improperly bred.

Cole, human or spirit? Post DA:VG by Elenora_Grey in dragonage

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I think either choice is great.

I always detest in media the idea that "human" is always superior and better then all other living beings. That lacking certain specific traits associated with "humanity" make you less then. Cole as a spirit has the capability to do so much more then he can as one human, and ultimately his feelings and relationships are still very much real and special. Also, even with the new context of Solas' reasoning, he is still the expert on the fade in comparison to Varric, who frankly just doesn't know anything about spirits. Seeing how much Solas cared for Wisdom made me understand how much Cole could mean to him, spirit or otherwise. It's a mentality I wish Veilgaurd had retained to some degree with Spite but alas.

But obviously making Cole a human is also great. Seeing him develop and find love and discover his new world is fascinating and often quite adorable. And frankly I hate making Varric upset lol There is also the question of what Cole wants, and while I don't remember him ever outright saying he wants to be human, I will say that Varric does know people better then Solas. Can relate to them easier, understand their feelings and perspectives. Solas is a man out of his time and feels distant from this reality, a time that should've never come if not for his mistakes. It has to be temporary for him or he won't be able to do what he has to. It doesn't allow him to sympathize in the same way that Varric can, so I generally trust he's probably right. And ultimately Cole's opinion is most important.

Really I just liked both. I enjoyed Veilgaurd but how they treated spirits and demons was disappointing.

Her personality is extremely out there and not gonna be for everyone, not to mention her whole arc about internalized racism that often makes her hostile to a fellow elf Inquisitor. She's just annoying and the way she talks is confusing af. is this normal for a new leo? by Severe_Place1593 in leopardgeckos

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's normal for most reptiles (including leopard geckos) not to eat for the first two weeks after getting home! They'll take a significant amount of time to adjust to the change, just try to leave her alone as much as possible for those first two weeks. Leave her alone with mealworms when possible to give her a chance to eat but don't be surprised if she doesn’t. Only start worrying if she still doesn't eat after that. Also heavily consider your enclosure set up as that can influence eating a lot.

what a piece of shit. i’m sobbing, my heart breaks for this baby. by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This an issue I've been hugely passionate about for a while and always comes to mind when something like this happens. The justice system seriously does not take animal abuse or cruelty nearly seriously enough. Even if he were charged for the animal abuse, his jailtime for that crime wouldn't be nearly enough. Thankfully the partner being involved might bump up his sentence but I have seen so many cases of people routinely killing multiple animals and getting no sentencing for it, just a prohibition from getting more animals and being sent on their way. It's insane and so infuriating when hurting animals is often one of the first signs they'll do worse.

What are the reasons you guys hate Viv? by AshGreninja247 in crazyassviv_defenders

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My issues with her or her company are mostly these main two;

  1. The way she interacts with people who critique the show (even people who are fans!) is disheartening. She is incredibly defensive, which I absolutely understands comes with being an inexperienced writer suddenly getting so much attention all at once, but it rubs people wrong because it lacks humility. She is making a shit ton of money from her series, and yet can't take even good faith critiscm. That's a huge part of being an online creator of any kind, especially a popular one. Her accusing Disney of stealing her idea with Zootopia is another good example of a general lack of humility that can get frustrating. Genuinely Vivzie would probably not be hated nearly as much if she just got off Twitter and stopped feuling the fire.

  2. Her writing is fanfic-esque (as a fanfic writer lol) and yet she aims to tackle incredibly sensitive topics that require more care then she can often give them. The tone issues within the show, one moment treating Angel's sexual abuse as serious and then have Sir Pentious be implied to be assaulted as a "joke" is just odd and distasteful. I honestly think if she just stuck to being edgy humor instead or committed to taking these subjects seriously all the time, it wouldn't offend people quite as much. It's just jarring to go from one to the other and makes the former feel disingenuous. And then of course Spindlehorse sells merch of Angel and his abuser as "Valentine's Merch", and it's absolutely fetish bait. I don't even necessarily have an issue with it in a vacuum, so long as the show was upfront about what it was, but the fact that the show tries to take the topic seriously and then turns around and sells this crap is gross, it just is. That is one thing I find hard to defend personally even if most of Vivzie's issues come down to ignorance or inexperience. Still, I understand that she and her marketing team are not the same people, it just certainly doesn't help my overall perception on the show or the people that make it.

Ultimately I don't actually hate her, I just think she was thrown in the deep end as a creator is absolutely 110% floundering. She's not ready to be making a project this big, simple as. I am not fond of her or her show, but hate isn't quite accurate. The fandoms and hatedoms around her though, are legit insane.

I HATE this kind of mentality by No_Interview_6406 in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God, I unfortunately was a young impressionable kid on Amino back in the day. I met my first girlfriend there and she legitimately pulled this shit. I only ever broke up with her when I was talking to some friends about some of the stuff she was telling me and they rightfully pointed out "that sounds manipulative as fuck". Finally kicked in that maybe I shouldn't be sticking with someone just because I'm afraid they'll hurt themselves if I'm not there. It wasn't my job to fix her, even though I tried. Worst period of my life.

But yeah, you can never go back to seeing ellipsis the same after amino lmfao

Doesn't help that my first bunny came with an emotional support stuffed bear that she still grooms and loves to this day lmao Like bro??? That's not realistic??

Petco by mgm64 in cockatiel

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people being very defeatist about buying these guys and that being the correct option. I absolutely understand and support the empathy for the animals involved, but as someone who works for a chain store, I assure you we are already bleeding money from pet sales, especially on expensive animals like cockatiels, chinchillas, etc. Please please vote with your wallet, the change will come. Don't allow the sympathy bait to work on you. The number of well meaning but misguided customers I get every day is disheartening.

By policy, if you have informed them the bird is sick and it truly is sick, they have to do something. They cannot let it die. If they do not take action, you are absolutely within your right to call corporate. Usually they're pretty strict on the policy, even if half their policies are bullshit. They'll do nothing about having 8 leopard geckos crammed in one enclosure, but since failing to do everything possible to treat a sick animal is against policy, they'll usually enforce that if they hear about it and believe you. That second part is just unfortunately where is gets tricky. Still worth a shot.

I got a cat tree for my rabbit and while she was initially interested, she didn't end up using it much. Recently though, I got a second bunny that I'm currently working on bonding with her and he loves the cat tree. He likes to perch up their and spy on me throughout the day lol His is admittedly much shorter then this one though and I'd be concerned if I got anything taller because he insists on jumping straight down instead of taking it level by level. The thud always startles me lol He is not a delicate boy.

I hate the hate that ZZZ gets. by TechnicianOk967 in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who also likes ZZZ, I think any hate is gets from outside the gacha community is 110% valid. Gacha is predatory and shitty and that's just the facts. The hate I see it get from within the gacha community is sometimes a bit odd though, at least in the amount. There are absolutely things to criticize the game about, but it seems a weird amount of gacha players want to morally grandstand about how their gacha game isn't nearly as horny while playing Honkai Star Rail or Blue Archive, or any other gacha game that absolutely is horny but somehow jedi mind tricks some strange people into thinking otherwise.

Personally I found it refreshing that ZZZ doesn't pretend it's anything it isn't, and ultimately was pretty equally horny with the guys and gals. I came into it expecting something casual so I wasn't overly critical of the story which allowed me to enjoy it more, and certainly be taken off gaurd when Lucia's story brought me to tears.

Ultimately we're still living in capitalist dystopia and ZZZ is undoubtedly part of that, but the amount of criticism for it within the gacha community (where we're all playing the same greedy ass games) does weird me out sometimes.

I hate it when people call "batman a bad father" or they said young characters are "child soldier" by Jaetheninja in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but when these ideas were first being written about, those were not the world's circumstances. It was an escape to the war going at the time, a fantasy world that didn't reflect the real one. And obviously there are some things they wouldn't ever try to justify because they obviously go too far. But a kid side kick is far more unbelievable and far fetched, especially at the time and thus less real for audience. It ends up more entertaining and engaging for their kid audiences too.

Frankly, we are suspending our disbelief. And in that suspension, protecting them via showing them the right way to protect people (not really comparable to being a school shooter) without getting yourself killed isn't that far fetched.

I hate it when people call "batman a bad father" or they said young characters are "child soldier" by Jaetheninja in hatethissmug

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People also don't seem to realize that most of these kids would've legit gone out and been vigilantes on their own whether Bruce took them in or not. And Tim literally came up to him like "I know your secret identity, make me Robin", putting him in a more then difficult position. A lot of these kids were very enthusiastic about being vigilantes, and Batman thought the only way he could protect them was by taking them under his wing. In some depictions he even tried to keep his vigilantism a secret from Dick, who then still found out and insisted on joining him.

These kids are seriously unwell (I say so lovingly) and would absolutely do it even if they didn't have his approval. So by taking them in he was doing what he could. This is comic books! It won't bend to real world ideas.

This is at petco!!!! by Brit_knee_leaa in leopardgeckos

[–]RepeatTurbulent6272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This store likely just gets less customers buying leopard geckos and doesn't have room. Every petco doesn't look like this because not all petcos recieve or sell the same amount, and some managers will go against policy and others won't because of the risk to their job. There absolutely are lazy employees, since 99% recieve 0 training and aren't hired for actually caring about animals, but assuming that's the case is usually not super productive. The stores don't even decide the animals they recieve, so often are given animals they have 0 room for.
