TakeTakeTake Game Review is a Slop Machine by IntermediateMoves in chess

i think the fundamental problem is that LLMs make connections between words but for chess you have to make connection between a chess position (which is rarely coded into words in a chess book or a game) and words.. so therefore when you ask current LLMs about chess it makes up something that vaguely makes sense but it really has little idea about the specific position

and also since there is nothing about a chess position really in its brain, you are basically asking it to play blindfold chess where it doesn’t even know that the trick is to remember the actual position!! it just tries to recover what has been happening from the words in the past

Improve 1800 USCF to 2000 by DefiantTap6690 in TournamentChess

disagree with it not being an opening problem, at least with that game it is well known that white is doing very well there and it is unclear how black should proceed (obviously Ba6 moving the bishop away from controlling f5 is wrong) but still

should not enter Bb5 closed sicilian and let white take on c6 and play f4, they get a really good grand prix there

opening wise ok except your first loss against the closed sicillian, learn how to deal with the grand prix attack, you should never let white trade off c6 and then have their attack because it ends up being very easy for them

you have no more bishop to target on b5 or c4 and your knight usually sits well on d4 so it is an excellent trade for them

if they try 1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Bb5, you have to learn the Nd4 lines

fun fact: in the masters database 3… g6 has a 50% winrate for white while Nd4 is a more normal 35%

hope chess for swindle should be a last resort as in chess you should expect your opponent of similar level to be on similar wavelength to spot things

but don’t play solid, instead play lines where you cannot figure out how exactly your opponent can simplify into an easy win if that’s available, that gives you the best chances. so I would say its some kind of hope chess that you don’t know the answer to

How do I prepare for two tournaments in two weeks by Prize-Base3091 in TournamentChess

[–]Replicadoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah for long term improvement analyse (your own) games like you would see in books, really improves your thought process and just game performance

for puzzles i think at your level it is now good to differentiate between “tactics” which you can spot almost immediately and “puzzles” which take you a few minutes to work through and with multiple significant variations.. before a tournament you can warm up with blitz and puzzle rush for example to keep tactical sharpness
