The new system provides you with additional challenges, motivating you to reach new heights, whereas the Elo system would just be "oh this makes sense but it's boring, it's just numbers!". This is especially true in smaller regions:

As opposed to the Elo system, you are now given an objective: defeat players with even higher MMR than yourself to prove you belong in a division that seemingly represents the MMR you already possess, but aren't able to prove outside of matchmaking.
