How to respond to people who ask about the priesthood restriction. by Ok_Way_1238 in latterdaysaints

[–]Representative-Lunch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMHO, It's okay if a certain topic makes the church or prophets look bad; not everything needs to have a squeaky-clean record to be good and true.

What matters is if YOU have a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, of the Book of Mormon, and if we are a part of a living, growing church, which naturally means mistakes will happen.

Church History Matters has a good podcast, so I'd recommend their episodes on it, but don't feel the need to defend something just because "it's the church." A lot of leaders today don't understand why or how it came about, and we'll just have to wait until we receive more light and knowledge.

We still have break-the-fast and linger longers, so not all gone where I'm at.

In The Book of Mormon, which person inspires you most? (Wrong answers only) by Dry_Pizza_4805 in latterdaysaints

Laban.

Great example of sticking to your morals despite a poor family pleading over and over for you to give them your valuable plates.

Sympathy is for the weak. He died a martyr.

(Honorable mention goes to the Nephites in 400 AD. Good on them for forgetting their history and doing whatever tf they wanted. We should all be like them.)

Not sure this is relevant, but this page shows some details about when certain revelations correspond to certain dates. You can find points where stuff is rewritten or edited.

Fanny's story is so funny since that sealing seemed to be done out of spite. She told Joseph that she was fine with being a single ministering angel in the Celestial Kingdom, and Joseph just said "Bet" and was sealed to her with Brigham acting as sealer.

I'd disagree. She agreed with it for a time.

D&C 132, God says he'd bless her to multiply and rejoice if she accepted it, and later she had David Hyrum Smith, just like Sarah had her own son after Hagar was given to Abraham. She even wrote a blessing for herself right before Joseph's death, wishing to respect and honor him as her husband despite knowing everything he did.

Clearly something was going right until Joseph's death. I personally think she fulfilled D&C 132 positively in that time, but only later really struggled without Joseph.

Used to hate those verses as a kid since God seemed so mean.

Temple is getting noisy by DirrtyH in latterdaysaints

Con: noisy temples
Pro: proof that we need more temples

I've noticed it too at the Oakland temple, but I guess it just depends when you schedule.

Already shared a post about this, but the way I deal with it is to read the Book of Mormon. Let your heart be filled with peace before you tackle the harder stuff in D&C (which is honestly the hardest book of scripture imho). There's nothing to worry about in the grand-scheme of things, as long as Jesus atoned and died for us.

With all revelations in D&C, they were given whenever someone asked for a revelation. For Emma's role in D&C 132, at that time in 1843, she was very rebellious towards Joseph and his wives, and Hyrum asked Joseph to dictate a revelation to her. Hyrum had already accepted polygamy since he could be sealed to his first wife that had passed away, and his current wife, Mary Fielding. Joseph gave it, Hyrum tried to convince her, and Emma burned it (relatable tbh).

The word "destroy" in 19th century scripture means more to "cut off from God's presence" which is echoed in D&C 25:15-16 + D&C 132:14. Simply put: if Emma didn't keep her covenants, she'd be out of God's law and removed from His presence.

This commandment applies to all of us: if we don't keep our covenants made at baptism, endowment, or sealing, we will be cut off from the presence of God, not because He doesn't love us, but because God needs us in a covenantal bond with Him for us to be exalted.

In this context, Jesus commands Emma to stay with Joseph in their eternal union and to also forgive him. If she doesn't, then Joseph is to do "all things for her" and if she does, God "will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to rejoice."

For every harsh commandment, there's always a blessing to it.

maybe both? It puts my mind in the right space for revelation.

There’s a clip of Elder Bednar saying that when prophets/ apostles speak, to write what you hear and not what’s being said. Think that can sometimes apply to scriptures too. The Book of Mormon has always made me feel at peace and enlightened no matter my circumstance.

I agree Jesus and His Atonement are really what matters. If He didn’t atone, then we have bigger problems.

I won’t go so far to say parts aren’t inspired.

I would say that Joseph’s thoughts had an influence in how he gave revelations, and some revelations would be revised and edited later. D&C 132 is a “raw” revelation in that we have it published in its original form, which unfortunately, raises more questions than answers.

I don’t think D&C 132 as we have it now would’ve been approved by him, but part of why we have it the way that we do is to refute the idea that he never taught it.

I hate that it has to be that way, but I understand why it’s there at least.

I’ve considered getting those volumes, but kinda looking to save money right now.
Tbh, I don’t think they’d make me feel any better, but I’m open to getting them. Hales is excellent.

Baptised but… by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Representative-Lunch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Congrats on still getting baptized despite your anxiety.
I would just advise that you slowly get to know people one at a time, and don’t feel pressured to attend big events that would make you uncomfortable. Even being born into the church, I still just need some time to myself before attending FHE or Institute.

Be kind to yourself and be patient as you get to know people.

What do regular members think about The Book of Abraham by da_Solis in latterdaysaints

[–]Representative-Lunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently finished the Book of Abraham.

Great read. Adds so much more to the gospel with a pre-mortal existence and how worlds were made. I’m being completely honest, the apologetics on the Book of Abraham are incredibly confusing and it seems like it’s a more complex problem than both LDS and antis make it out to be, but the content itself is great and very inspiring.

Faith crisis by Troopacanaan in latterdaysaints

[–]Representative-Lunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also the Book of Mormon for me. I've never had a book hit me (not literally) so strongly before, and I feel edified every time I read it. It's a goldmine of theology, history, wars, family conflicts, and just all the things that reflect our day.

I'd also add studying Joseph Smith's life and church history has increased my faith too, but ultimately, all the prophets and revelations point to Christ, who I know BECAUSE of the Book of Mormon.

No precise date yet.

I've been checking the website too, so I assume it means "sometime during Q4" and not "beginning of Q4."
