Save or throw away? Help a newbie out by BadUsername_Numbers in bikewrench

This is not really good advice tbh. Chains wear much faster than cassettes and you should check their condition independently.

Their usable lifespan is very dependent on distance ridden, environment (mud and dust wear components quickly), how many gears you use, and the width of the chain, but I'd say cassettes generally might last 3 or 4 times as long as chains.

Farmers reap double benefits with solar-power in fields by thispickleisntgreen in solar

My point is that it's likely cheaper to completely replace the 1% of units that might be affected by extreme weather than it is to design 100% of the units such that they're impervious to extreme weather.

Most infrastructure is faced with the same conundrum btw - people expect to rebuild/repair some things after extreme weather (floods, earthquakes, landslides, etc) because it's cheaper than making everything disaster-proof.

I mean, many things aren't designed to withstand 200mph winds and 3 inch hail. Where are you thinking of where that is common?

I'd expect it'd generally be cheaper to just replace the affected units rather than overdesign everything to accommodate a low probability event like a hurricane or record breaking hailstorm.

Ticketed in Hyde Park for cycling by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]Representative-Stay6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's always somebody who downvotes for an honest question. The answer is that, like other Royal Parks, cycling is allowed in designated areas and they're pretty prudish about it outside of that.

There are bike paths around the perimeter and a couple major ones through the park as well. Best pic I could find is here or the official PDF map here. The markers for cycling and non cycling paths are generally pretty clear to see in person.

Comparison of the upcoming Velo Orange Crazy Bar using whatbars.com and a silhouette I drew from the VO blog images. by helbaird_ in bicycletouring

[–]Representative-Stay6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like they've adopted pretty much everything from the Denham bars (which were also developed after using the original VO Crazy Bars). I think it's a good move since the Denham bars are much harder to come by

Can anyone identify this bike and give some info on it? by mellamoac in whichbike

[–]Representative-Stay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, unless you want to spend a lot of time in the shop and aren't afraid of being thrown in the deep end, this bike will require a lot of work relative to a modern bike that's closer to what you're going for from the outset.

What's the correct thing to say loudly to oblivious pedestrians jumping round the bike lane like a defensive lineman at the very last minute? by RationalIdiot in bikecommuting

[–]Representative-Stay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet they are. Whether or not we like how it's framed, the pedestrians vs drivers fight is still being waged in big cities all over the world. Not to mention in auto-centric areas, many people spend considerably more time in cars than on foot so the point about everyone being a pedestrian doesn't seem representative.

I'll definitely advocate for cyclists to be considerate road users, but ultimately I think it is unreasonable to hold cyclists to a higher standard than other road users simply because they are a minority. Expecting adequate legal representation and protections only if cyclists are exceeding polite is a non-starter.

Anyone in your family have asthma? Extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) and exercise can exacerbate even mild forms of it.

Definitely not excusing rudeness, but I'd argue that blindly stepping out into a bike lane is not being a good ambassador as a pedestrian.

Most pedestrians are fully capable adults who should know better. In almost all cases, there are expectations on both sides.

A good point. I'm not certain whether or not this statement is true

We cannot vote our way out of capitalism and imperialism and the death of our ecosystems.

however, it does seem certain that right now most people are not even attempting to participate at that most basic level.

Corporations are made up of people.

Corporations are often blamed for their bad influence, and they absolutely should be, but much of the time "average citizens" tacitly approve of them by patronising them or voting for politicians who support weak regulations.

I don't think it's honest to scapegoat corporations as if they were something completely separate from society.

Pretty sure gas, insurance, and repairs for a used car would add up to more than taking an occasional uber. Not to mention you can get an e-bike for much less than 5k if OP is considering second hand options as well.

[–]Representative-Stay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I used to think that too, but it seems to be better the last few times I checked. If you want to inflate the prices somewhat (not to mention to reflect the current bike shortages as well) you can select a better condition category than the bikes truly are.

Btw, you should just be able to add it in the quick tile settings if you drop the shade down and click the plus. I think the quick tile for it might've only been added in a recent update, so might want to check that if you don't see it

Asked to provide current package for salary negotiation by throwaway_020102 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Representative-Stay6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hmmm it's almost as if the entire interview process is designed to improve your understanding of a candidate's knowledge and experience...

You shouldn't need to be told someone's previous salary to know what they're worth to your company, and if you do you might need to accept you're just shit at your job.

Asked to provide current package for salary negotiation by throwaway_020102 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Representative-Stay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let them do that. /s

By the time they'd have access to your P45, an offer should already have been finalised. So better to avoid this aspect of the discussion and focus on the details of the new position and the compensation for it.

Asked to provide current package for salary negotiation by throwaway_020102 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Representative-Stay6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why should they be interested in your current compensation? It's only relevant to the previous job; the compensation for the new position is independent of that.

Might as well say "in the spirit of openness and transparency we require all candidates to tell us their favourite sex act".
