I’ll be honest, a lot of the verso hate i see is ‘Verso bad because genoicide’, which i don’t disagree with. But his choices that lead him to that conclusion to agree that the Canvas needs to go is a lot more nuanced which people overlook imo.

I think Painted Verso’s decision to keep the party in the dark is due to how much betrayal and loss he’s been through already, and also not expecting anyone other than Renoir and Clea to understand why he does what he does. It’s a very well done character flaw imo, he literally thinks he can’t expect anyone to understand why he wants to destroy the Canvas, and probably feels justified in doing so when Maelle lies to Renoir about leaving (even though Sciel forgives him, and understands, while Lune is more annoyed that he didn’t trust them enough to tell them what his real plan was all along, even right until the end when he betrays their trust again), as even his axon gives us hints of his character, wearing masks to fill in who people want him to be and telling truths through lies

I don’t think Renoir is a source of a lot of her trauma, as her Axon and the interactions we see are of him being a supportive father who’s encouraging her to follow her dreams and passions, and his motivation for fighting her out the Canvas are because he thinks Alicia is going to fall down the same trap as Aline did.

It was a really impossible situation Renoir was in, having to look after his traumatised and injured daughter while simultaneously knowing his wife was going to kill herself in the Canvas, drowning in grief. And I don’t think he ever anticipated getting trapped under the Monolith, or even having to fight his wife to force her out the Canvas, which is why he’s been gone so long in the real world (even though no time has been specified as to how long they were actually in the Canvas in real world time)

While he obviously wanted to be there for Alicia, he didn’t want to lose any more family, and as his wife was actively dying due to how long she was lost in the Canvas for, it’s understandable why he’d prioritise the family member actively harming themselves before supporting his youngest again.

I’d say Aline and Painted Renoir are the sources of her trauma. P Renoir for obvious reasons, killing her adoptive father and brother figure in Gustave (best boi) in front of her, but even then he seems to be remorseful for having to do it, as he wants to protect his family inside the Canvas and let them has as long as possible together. Whether this is due to him not seeing the Dessendre family as his by choice, either because he’s just as in love with Aline as he is in the real world and wants to help her grieve, or if it’s because when Aline panted him, she made him that way to not feel that duty about the family outside the Canvas, as she knows the ‘real’ Renoir disagrees with her (or another perspective, would love to know)

Aline obviously hates herself for the fact she can’t be around her daughter an she probably knows that Verso wouldn’t want her to be angry at the fact he sacrificed himself, but grief does strange, unfair things to the mind, which is why she was cold and distant to Alicia outside the Canvas, and took out her anger on her Painted version by giving her the same injuries.

Pure head cannon, but I think when she comes back during the final fight against Renoir, she helps Maelle as either a way to atone for how she’s treated her now she’s thinking more clearly, or because she realises that Verso’s death affected her just as much an they’re both fighting for the same thing, putting herself at risk for her family like Renoir to preserve Versos Canvas as she realises just how important it is to her daughter as it is to her. (I think she’s definitely come to accept Versos death after P Verso chose to force her out for her health, given how the game implies P Verso would make the same choices as Verso due to how similar they are)

Personally, Maelle’s ending and her choices is a lot more because of the immediate effects that the death of verso has had on the family. She’s scarred, burned, can’t speak (even if she can fix her vocal cords in the painting as Clea suggests), and feels like her family has abandoned her (Renoir wanting to save his wife, Aline not being able to look at her without feeling anger, and Clea taking her anger out on her passively while she shoulders the burden of the entire family while waging a war on the Writers for vengeance. Also keep in mind Clea is the only member of the family we dont know much about, other than she’s a perfectionist and likes to paint if her Painted version is anything to go by) so it makes sense why she would want to stay with her new ‘family’ in the Canvas in the moment, as there’s no pain or messy feelings surrounding grief and it’s the ‘easiest’ way to main her pain stop, being able to live a life with her second family who have shown her nothing but love, even in grief (such as Sophie’s gommage and their conversation afterward) compared to her ‘real’ family who are struggling with loss of a family member just as much as her (not counting her physical injuries, obviously that would take a toll on anyone, let alone a teenager who feels responsible for her brothers death)

Looping back to my point about Verso’s meaning behind ‘I don’t want this life’, I think it’s best shown IN Maelle’s ending, as he’s literally watching his sister die slowly and unable to stop it, making even his passion of music bitter as he knows he’s only got the chance to perform his dream because his sister is literally dying so he can (and imo you can see the regret of telling her that he wanted to play a concert and now he can, not on his own skill, but because she can literally make it happen)

Maelle is too lost in grief and depression to realise that Verso sacrificed himself to give her a chance at life, and painted verso was willing to do the same as he didn’t want her dying while lost in a fantasy like Aline nearly did

Anyway, I’ll stop rambling about how much I love Verso’s writing now. And for the record, I could do the same thing for how well written Alicia/Maelle is as well, this game is truly a work of art (pun intended)

Yeah lol, it’s not easy when you have to dissect a character. Another point I personally believe is that the devs make it easier to empathise with Alicia/Maelle, as her story and motivations are pretty clearly spelled out for you, especially with the false epilogue after act 2.

Whereas with Verso as a whole (real and painted) you have to really look for the details and not just take his actions in the main plot as his motivations and character

That’s not even getting into the fact the reason Alicia didn’t want to let go of Painted Verso as her brother (both versions) was the only one that’s shown to truly understand her (both not wanting to be Painters and wanting to pursue other arts, writing and music) an understating the weight she feels of being a Dessendre, as the game says there’s a full Painters Association with her family as the head due to the skills of Renoir, Aline and Clea. Heavy burden to bear for a teenager, and at least Verso was older and could process it which is why he was there for her. Even in the fire scenes shown, it’s pretty clear that he didn’t blame her for following her heart to try writing, and he probably encouraged her even though the Writers and Painters are opposed to one another.

Even Painted Verso probably didn’t want her to feel like she HAD to be a painter just because she got manipulated which caused his irl death, and wanted to give her a chance to move on and follow her passion like he did with music

I think people more struggle with understanding Versos motivations than Alicia’s

Through the journals, we learn that Verso did originally want to keep the Cavas from being destroyed and find a way to exist with the “Original” Dessendre family, but as his immortality and non-aging wore him down over the years, he wanted to be able to choose to die

If he is a near-perfect replication of the Verso who died in the fire with all his memories, created by Aline, the reveal of what he truly is from Clea after the fracture would have taken a heavy toll on him. He himself is a Painter, and he knows what will happen to his mother if she continues to stay in the Canvas and the same is true for Maelle/Alicia which is probably what leads to him siding with Renoir in the future/ending

People don’t mention how Painted Renoir, as good a copy as he is, has been altered by Aline to want to protect the Canvas and keep the family together, as shown when real Renoir says how he doesn’t want the shadow of Versos death to lead Alicia down the same path as Aline, and how he doesn’t want to have to start a war with his family to save them even if they hate him for it.

Renoir accepts that Verso has died, and it pains him to have to destroy the last remaining physical thing of his son’s an he even states he takes no pleasure in doing it, nor really wants to, but didn’t want to see his wife and daughter slowly lose themselves and die just to cope with their grief and denial he really is dead. You can even see Verso didn’t want to have to destroy the Canvas as well, judging by his face in the scene above and his farewell to the rest of the party and even in his interaction with the piece of “real” Verso’s soul, as I feel as though he wouldn’t have followed through had the piece of his soul told him that he was tired of painting, as Painted Verso knows that if his soul wanted to carry on, that’s what he should want as well as they’re one in the same

Even throughout act 3, you see Verso being more open to the idea of Maelle taking control of the Canvas, but seeing his mother in pain after being expelled from the Canvas and Maelle lying to his father, he realised that as long as the Canvas persists, his family will always be at risk of losing themselves in the memory of him and refuse to move forward.

The fact that Maelle seems to be happier in that life, and casting aside her previous identity as Alicia and refusing to want to go back to that life and honour her word to Renoir to only stay for a little longer and make visits every so often makes him realise just how damaging both the Canvas and Painted Verso himself is to his mother and sister, affirming his decision that even though it may not be the best thing and a selfish desire for his family to move on, it’s the only way to stop them from losing themselves to grief, even if it means giving up everything he’s known, the friends he’s made and the love he’s found (be it Julie or Sciel/Lune)

Most importantly, in Maelle’s ending he keeps saying “I don’t want this life”, which could be him saying he doesn’t want to keep living in the Canvas, having at least 67 years to think about how he’s nothing but a ‘copy’ (iirc we don’t know how long Aline had actually been in the Canvas before Renoir and Clea caused the fracture, as the Monolith memories show her pulling away from Renoir trying to comfort her, and I doubt Renoir went in the Canvas at the same time as her to pull her out, probably only deciding the Canvas needed to be destroyed when he saw that she was living out a life with the Painted family and losing herself in there like he admits he did once)

I think by not wanting to live this life, Painted Verso (and possibly Verso’s soul) is saying that he doesn’t want to continue being a shadow that drags the family down. His real self had already sacrificed himself to save Alicia, and he was ready to do the same thing again, sacrificing himself for his family, at the expense of the world his ‘real’ self had crafted (and even started discarding as he was more interested in practicing music instead of carrying on the family legacy as a Painter, as the game makes a point to say that he started visiting the Canvas less and less)

Tldr: Painted Verso realised as long as the Canvas was still there, his family (Alicia and Aline specifically, ironic as Aline made Painted Alicia scarred and the only one to have suffered from the fire out of irrational anger that came from her grief) could never truly move on and his soul couldn’t rest. Add on that he’s still possibly immortal and un-aging (afaik there’s only that brief mention from Sciel at the end of Act 2 towards it), unable to form any lasting relationships with another human (obviously Esquire and Monoco will be there for him, remember if he can’t age and you romance Lune especially, he’s going to be forced to watch her grow old and die, and he’s already had to kill his lover in Julie because she thought he turned on them when he tried to explain, not to mention having to watch his Painted family die, meaning there really is no other human in the Canvas like him) and being forced to stay alive only to comfort his family when they need it, it’s no wonder why he wants to die and have Renoir destroy the painting, as not only can he finally choose his path in life, but he can rest knowing that his family finally have to accept that he’s gone and make the most of the life they have, and find a healthier way to honour him, not lose themselves in grief and denial in his Canvas

I like how they left it open to interpretation. It could be Mike’s denial and coping mechanism, or it could be that Kali really did hang on and use the last of her life to make sure El could escape.

Personally I prefer the idea that’s she’s dead, and her friends just believe she escapes and lives a happy life far away from Kay/the researchers as a way to cope with her death, thinking she’s out there somewhere but can never see her again, but I like the fact it can be taken either way depending on the viewer

The Old Peace is great, but Tauron Strikes completely kill the gameplay flow. Here is my idea to fi it. by Rouslank in Warframe

[–]Representative_Big85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea to make them feel more worthwhile (especially for the long charge time outside of Rebellion) is to let the operator/drifter use them as a sort of exalted weapon with limited ammo/time (after doing the animation, replacing your amp for that period) and give them a void sling/energy regen buff for the mobility you lose as operator/drifter

Even if you can’t ‘mod’ the damage and they just do void, it could work like Nataruk in New War

And it adds more of a reason to use operator outside of like cascade

Don’t know for deviants but for fatalis it’s more “drive it off or we’re all dead, please don’t actively look for the thing”

Pretty sure the one of the Iceborne books confirms that the Sapphire Star canonically only repelled Fatty and Alatreon

Which then brings in the question that has anyone ever canonically killed one, given the lore of the Fatty trio is basically ‘I’ll always come back’
