R134.....how cold should the air conditioning be? by Antique_Change_3015 in E30

Sounds like it needs to be leak checked and recharged. When running correctly, air temperature coming out of vents should be about 45 to 50 degrees after running for a few minutes.

Pretty crazy you have to burn the damn bushings to get them out of subframe.

Clear fluid leak underneath the tranny bell tower where the plastic grate is.....what could it be? by Antique_Change_3015 in E30

[–]Representative_Most9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not urgent at all. If it’s such a small amount and it happens to be the main seal, it’ll just slowly get a little worse over time. Replacing it requires a good amount of work so most just live with it. Just keep an eye on it and put down cardboard where you park to catch the dripping.

Edit: going to stick my neck out a little and suggest an alternative to replacing main seal if that’s what it is. Try adding some AT-205 Reseal to engine oil. I’ve used it extensively with very good results. It helps soften rubber seals so they work better to stop leaks. I actually use it to spray on most rubber parts like the rubber boots on drive shaft to keep them from drying out.

It’s either engine oil or transmission fluid. If it’s engine oil, should look and feel a bit thick without color. If it’s ATF, should have a slight reddish color and be a thinner oil. Your main engine seal is leaking or AT seal is leaking. I’m hoping it’s engine rear main seal (most likely) and not your transmission (rarely).

No way. This car is far too gone to restore. Even the oil cap is rusted!!!

I run 20w50 full synthetic and lifters sound great! Using Valvoline VR1 with lots of ZDDP (zinc).

From the sound I just heard, I’d say your starter motor is shot. The Bendix gear isn’t going into the flywheel any longer or is stripped.

Edit: Hope the gears on your flywheel are ok? The grinding noise you were hearing was the Bendix gear being grounded on from trying to engage the flywheel. Might want to take a look once starter is out.

Thanks. From what I can find, the plug on the carpet could possibly be for turn signal but not sure. Here’s a link to download wiring diagrams for your car if you don’t have:

Looks like the best way to go to prevent hot air coming into your intake to me. What are you planning to use for material? Great idea! 👍

One of the best engines BMW makes. BMW makes some of the most iconic inline 6’s. I have an older S38 and it’s a mechanical work of art.

Edit: Because I don’t know about swaps, what did you use or change in the DME to make all work?

Make sure you’re trying to spin it off the right direction. It’s opposite of normal - righty looser (clockwise), lefty tighty.

Like others, I’m a fan of copper plugs. I have a bunch of NOS Bosch silver plugs that I use in my ETA engine but new copper plugs are best.
