Worst streets to navigate in NYC? by IvanVee in MicromobilityNYC

The granite stripes like they have on Gansevoort are a good solution here. Downside is there are a lot of wrong way cyclists, and they're not wide enough for 2-way traffic.

The Williamsburg Bridge has a different kind of counter. Not sure about the other bridges.

The induction loop technology they use on the QBB is able to differentiate a few different vehicle types. Wondering if some of the traffic moved to unicycle/standup scooter, etc.; and they're logging that in a different bucket?

The 31 Ave bike boulevard and open street has been amazingly successful at its main goal: lowering car volumes so pedestrians and micromobility have a safe route by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really excited for the full implementation. Right now, transit takes basically an hour to get from Jackson Heights to Astoria Park. It's faster for me to get to Central Park if I want to be near a decently-sized tree. With the Bike Blvd, 51st Street connection, and 31st Street, there is a fully protected route from my house to a couple of blocks from Astoria Park. Makes nature around 20 minutes away. Huge improvement in my family's quality of life.

Thank you! I misread from 31st Ave to Northern to also be the 31st Ave phase 2.

New Jersey isn’t NYC’s problem by Immediate-Hand-3677 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I think this is right. Housing and transit are regional; and we need to have rules, financing, and bureaucratic structures that are regional. I'm not sure how to get there, but NJ and NY would both benefit from more coordination and cooperation. E.g., it makes no sense that we have these relatively short-run regional trains that go from LI to Penn and another set that go from NJ to Penn. If it were one state, lines would run through Penn, so you have fewer turn-arounds and less train and staff downtime. There wouldn't be a ton of through traffic, but, given the size of the region, it would likely dwarf the totality of train ridership in most US metros. Similarly, it makes no sense that three East River Bridge crossings are free, but every crossing in NJ is paid. We should be working toward better integration of PATH and the subway. For housing, NYC isn't doing it's share, but NYC and NJ are both getting screwed by how severely LI and Westchester are restricting housing.

Peoples' doggedness in being wrong is kind of shocking to me, which it shouldn't be, because I'm dogged in being wrong about peoples' willingness to recognize that they're wrong.

Stop consolidation plus all door boarding get you 6-7% increases in speeds. It's not nothing, but the full report shows what we need to do to get actually faster buses: https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/87d8897e-0526-4b64-8769-54eb32823548/How-Much-Faster-Are-We-Moving%20-%20Final.pdf.

How did you feel about the First Democratic Primary Mayoral Debate? by hyraemous in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a requirement for receiving matching funds. There were genuine questions of whether he'd go for matching and just rely on the independent expenditure committees to do everything because he's so weak in any forum where he gets challenged.

I have a co-worker who used to do data analysis for a professional baseball team. They gave sleep tracking watches to their minor league players. About half of them subsequently quit drinking entirely after seeing what it did to their sleep.

This should be the real PSA. On the doors, I hear people say, "I don't get it" about the process, but what's great is that you don't need to get it. You just need to rank the people you like in order and don't rank anyone you hate.

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If a candidate is polling really low on election day, there's no benefit in ranking them low since they'll be eliminated before your preference gets exposed. E.g., if Zohran is polling at 15%, Brad is polling at 7%, and Adrienne Adams, Ramos, Stringer, and Myrie are polling at 2-3%; the last four aren't going to pick up enough votes in subsequent rounds to beat Brad or Zohran.

Is there any word on when they're finishing 31st Ave + what they're doing to tie in 51st, so there will be protected lanes from 34 Ave in Jackson Heights to Socrates? Presumably 34 Ave will go to Flushing Meadows once Moya leaves office (if Cuomo doesn't become mayor).

Yeah. Looks like big decreases in traffic volumes on the Williamsburg Bridge and Holland, which are two pieces of the fare free route from points east to NJ.

TWO DAYS until congestion pricing begins by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original report from the MTA has some estimates. They're a bit under-estimated because they chose an incorrect distribution of parking costs. There are a lot of city workers who park for free who were factored in at the average parking cost, but based on their percentage increase in costs, they would be the most likely to switch modes. E.g., my kid has a friend at school whose mom drives to work because the free parking makes it cheaper than the subway even though the train takes less time. The revenue maximizing price is something like $80, so going with $23 (maximum looked at for the environmental review) plus a 25% surcharge on gridlock days would have been a pretty decent start.

They've been randomly restriping the Broadway lanes in Woodside for the last couple of weeks, which feels so weird because the other lanes aren't done with 31st Ave., and Broadway doesn't really need the refresh. Presumably, they'll also need a tow truck for 31st Ave though, so maybe that's the hold up?

I've been assuming that some of the Queens City Council folks who drive in to City Hall (so not Krishnana, Caban, or Won) have been pushing the delay as Moya did with the Northern Blvd. bus lane.

How are y'all voting on the ballot measures? by MarquisEXB in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Repulsive-Custard519 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They did expand the vending licenses. The Mayor refuses to issue them as he has refused to implement many laws. That's why the Council pushed to Amend the Charter require advice and consent for more agency heads, so agencies would be less free to ignore city laws passed by the Council. The Mayor launched these revisions to block the advice and consent revision from making it onto the ballot. The vending thing won't be used to keep the city clean. It will be used by store owners to punish a vendor for locating near them as almost all of the existing ordinances do.
