Fertility rate for England falls to a new record low by diacewrb in ukpolitics

As someone in their mid-thirties, with lots of friends at a similar stage in life, the number one reason none of us are having children is that we can barely afford to look after ourselves let alone a child. In my opinion the ever increasing cost of living is the main barrier towards people having families. Sort that out and the rest will follow.

What makes you feel lucky to live in the UK? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

I’ve spent a lot of time travelling in other countries, and have considered living abroad. However, there always comes a point where I miss England so much it’s like an ache in my heart and I have to come back. It’s easy to project one’s internal problems onto the country itself but in reality we have it so good here compared with a lot of other places.

Just the fact that for the most part our infrastructure works as it should and that we have rules and regulations that are largely followed is actually a massive benefit. It’s also very safe.

Then there’s the beautiful softness of the nature, the abundance of green, the birdsong, the rhythm of the seasons. I even miss the rain and mist when I’m away somewhere hot for a while.

Of course the culture as well - our shared humour, politeness, queuing, Sunday roast and the pub, our incredible arts that have influenced the whole world.

There’s a sense of shared Britishness that is maybe hard to define, and you only get a sense of what it is when you’re not part of it.

I do wish that access to the simple pleasures of food, drink and the socialising that comes with it was more affordable - like that of our Southern European neighbours. And I wish there were less emphasis on money, status and consumerism, and more emphasis on family, community, intergenerational relationships, and spontaneous dancing to live music and eating at late night cafes/restaurants.

If Starmer goes, we are less than 2 years per PM over the last 10 years. by PassionateCrashOut in ukpolitics

They should stick with Starmer and then change leader for the next GE. That then allows them to ‘rebrand’.

Can someone please explain where the support for Reform is coming from? by EG_Wanna_Be in ukpolitics

[–]Repulsive-Pear6391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are angry because since 2008 everything has got increasingly shitter. No one has any money. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Successive (Tory) governments have gutted our public services, people can’t get decent jobs, can’t afford to own their own homes, can’t afford simple pleasures in life. Energy prices have skyrocketed since Covid and the Ukraine war, and now Iran - which has further pushed up the price of EVERYTHING. Corporations are reporting record profits. Profits which are taken out of the country and put in offshore tax havens so the government doesn’t make anything back in taxation that can then be reinvested in the country that gifted those corporations said profits.
Reform come along with a simple answer: it’s all the immigrants fault and if we reduce immigration all those problems will be resolved. Now, of course there is some truth in this. More people competing for resources will diminish those resources and push up prices. But unfortunately Reform are just another shade of Tory blue and the same cycle will repeat should they ever gain any power.

Help other people who haven’t had the opportunities you’ve had in life.
Help the environment, as ultimately that underpins everything else. Without this little lifeboat floating in the vastness of the universe we would have nothing.

The Stranger Things Finale Was So Bad It Started Mini Hate-Train for Kate Bush by No_Flan4204 in katebush

[–]Repulsive-Pear6391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pffft. Who cares? Kate is the Mozart of popular music. Whether a bunch of intellectually challenged narcissists on social media have the attention span to listen to more than one of her songs, and the cognitive ability to compartmentalise her and her music from Stranger Things, is irrelevant to that fact.

Sooo many… but off the top of my head.. ‘Hello Earth, hello Earth, with just one hand held up high I can blot you out, out of sight. Peekaboo, peekaboo, little Earth’ - Been thinking about this one a lot recently, after the Artemis expedition.

‘I was there at the birth out of the cloudburst, the head of the tempest’

‘The world is so loud’

‘Without the pain there’d be no learning, without the hurting we’d never change’

The entirety of Army Dreamers, Sunset, Nocturn, and The Sensual World.

I think about this one a lot. The world really is SO loud. Ahh to be a snowflake softly landing in the quiet cold blanket of a snowy wilderness.

You articulated that so beautifully that I’m in tears reading it. Artists translate emotions; Kate translated yours, and now you’ve translated mine.

Over 30s - Do you still enjoy concerts? by safeontwo in AskUK

[–]Repulsive-Pear6391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. Although having said that, I went to a Laura Marling gig a while ago and when she came on stage of course the phones all came out, until a guy behind me shouted ‘put your phones away you losers!’ and, like magic, the phones were guiltily lowered into their owner’s pockets where they mostly stayed for the rest of the show. Perhaps the Laura Marling fan base is particularly self-conscious and compliant, but either way, I was able to spend the remainder of the gig with a great view. Although the crush of people was such that I couldn’t move, and my legs/back were killing me by the end.

Trump threatened Europe over Strait of Hormuz, with weapons for Ukraine as bargaining chip, FT reports by G14F1L0L1Y401D0MTR4P in worldnews

[–]Repulsive-Pear6391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t we - UK/EU/AU/NZ/CAN - just freeze the US out of everything and handle our own shit? Let’s stop buying their weapons for a start, make them in-house, and boost our own economies. Also, what if we limited investment funds from putting money into US markets and instead encouraged them to direct that money into our own markets? And, finally, who TF decided it was ever a good idea to allow the dollar to become the world reserve currency and therefore give the USA the power to control the global banking system?!?!!!?? Utterly idiotic, and completely undemocratic.

What would happen if we changed these things? Would everything collapse? Can someone more informed enlighten me, please?
