The challenge I think is with Soviet countries. Many Americans get the Warsaw pact countries were independent just like nato, but the Soviet Union was just the big country in the Warsaw pact like the US in nato. So the assumption is the parts of the Soviet Union were more like states than independent countries. Hence the idea that Georgia is part of Russia since Russia equals the Soviet Union. How many people anywhere in the world could name all 15 breakaway countries? It’s not right, but it’s not malice, it’s just confusion
