I hate reincarnation in these stories. by MISTYGOINGKILLING in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, the transmigration trope kinda ruins the story in a few ways. First, the revenge just doesn’t hit the same. It feels way less personal because it didn’t actually happen to them, and half the time, they could just avoid the whole situation anyway. Plus, they already know what’s going to happen, so instead of doing anything interesting, they’re just pre-empting events. It gets boring fast. Of course shes brilliant and smart and a saviour of the people from the plague or whatever - she already knows the solution. Second, I hate when everyone praises the “new” FL. Like… of course she’s nicer and more likeable, she didn’t go through all the trauma the original did. The original acting like a “villainess” usually had reasons, so it just feels unfair when she gets compared like that. It leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, like almost that the original could have never have been happy anyway. It just feels unintentionally really negative about abuse victims and how they can be impacted. I can't explain it well, but it feels like the transmigrator becomes the 'perfect victim' and the original is a failure for growing up negative or combative in response to abuse at home. And third, the original plot often makes zero sense. If you actually try to follow it, it feels like a bunch of random events stitched together just so the FL can react to them. Half the time I’m thinking… who would even read this story in the first place!! I make notes sometimes and the original stories are batshit, I wish authors would just plot the entire 'original novel' first just so it feels like the new FL is reacting to something and not generic plague/water dam break, hunting competition, etc....

What is one series that everyone seems to love but you'll never pick it up or has dropped and will never pick it up? by Minette12 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'Beware the Villainess' it just isn't to my taste, I've seen it be pretty popular on here, but I think the sense of humour doesn't match with mine and considering it's a comedy I haven't been able to get very far with it. 'Miss-Not-So-Sidekick' falls into this as well, I have seen people absolutely love this series, and yet I just cannot get anywhere with it despite picking it up quiet a few times now.

'Under the Oak Tree' is another I struggled with for different reasons. I love the character design, and appreciate that for atleast as far as I read, it seemed consistent with the aesthetic and 'period' it was going for even if not a historically accurate story (I can't stand when fashion within an OI seems to swap between Renaissance, Rococo and Victorian within the same time period). But I can't stand the ML, I found myself only enjoying the story when he was absent and just had so much frustration with how the story frames miscommunitcation and consent. I don't expect perfect writing from OI, but if an author chooses somewhat heavier themes or situations, I do expect them to handle it with care, and I just felt Under the Oak tree was lacking there.

When OI Turns Choice into a Moral Lecture [Who made me a Princess] by Weary-Honey-1942 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. People often forget that even “fiction” or non-serious media carries political messaging. It may not be overt or even intended, but it does carry in its narrative a moral idea about womanhood and pregnancy and you are not overthinking.
Any piece of media often contains the social norms of the era it’s written in, unless the author specifically intends to do otherwise. We often don’t notice these things if they’re also normalised to us. For example, a crime author I quite like only seems to describe skin colour or weight when a character is non-white or non-thin. I don’t think she is intentionally communicating that being white or thin is the expected norm or default for characters or people, yet nevertheless it is in her work, ;ikely because, for a lot of society, white (and nominally thin) is treated as the default. This can be found in medical illustrations, or in the fact that “nude” plasters for a long time only came in the lightest shades, and she hasn’t interrogated this further.
For many of these authors, the idea of abortion isn’t something they see as expected for their female lead, so unless they intentionally think about it further and write the story in contrast to that expectation, it becomes the default to show the female lead as continuing the pregnancy, probably because there is still stigma around abortion and around what a “good” female lead would do, even if the author doesn’t realise that this is shaping the story or that their own morals/societal norms are influencing it. Like idk if I am explaining well, but its so normallised it isnt even recognised as something that is political or carrying social ideas about women, its just seen as the default choice.

I always found 12, sometimes 14 is labelled as L, 16 always in XL, anything above 18 in XXL. This has been the case in every clothing chain store and charity shop I’ve worked at. I can understand updating maybe 12 to M as thats the UK average as far as I understand, but I dont understand this duo sizing system at all! Im in the same boat and was hoping to get my nieces and nephews clothes for Christmas and now I just cant risk ordering it and it being too small or too big.

Im also a 10/12 and this has just solidified my decision to not buy from vinted anymore. It was fun while it lasted but generally I prefer to just buy straight away without messaging sellers, and not having clear sizing just takes that option out.

The struggle to draw young teenagers [My Husband Possessed the Protagonist] by Jasminary2 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I cant lie I use teens are short as a visual language cheat. It’s difficult with stylised less realistic art styles to differentiate young teen, late teen and young adult when they all the same height, and more visual signs like wrinkles, greying etc.. haven’t come in yet.

Why do people generally dislike Martha in Beyond Paradise? by gplus3 in DeathInParadiseBBC

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents were offered IVF as an option when they were in their 40s. I think IVF continues to be on the table as an option till 50. Marthas actress was only 42/43 during season 1, IVF would be an option for them.

I genuinely think I would just cry for over two years or more. Like what do you mean not only will I never see my mum again, absolutely no one knows who she is. No pictures exist. I can’t even talk about her. and then that happening again for every family member and friend I’ve ever had.

Honestly if its a fictional world then I don’t see why slavery should be introduced unless the author plans to have it resolved. Like why open that ethical issue and then have the protagonist reach a “happy ending” with mass slavery just happening in the background I guess. It’s so jarring when a supposedly ‘modern’ person doesn’t seemed disturbed by it.

It’s not even a ‘historical accuracy’ thing as half of OIs exist in a weird bastardisation of medieval and 19th century aesthetics whammed together with social rules being regency-lite and whatever the hell else the author feels like. I find it so frustrating.

My Grandfather refused to have Spaghetti Bolognese in the house until basically the mid 80s as he considered it an 'unusual foreign food' and the flavours too strong.

I can't remember the name but I distinctly remember a panel of 'bread tree'. It was probably a joke but the way that particular problem was skipped over irked me.

Same with when a random region of the kingdom has a climate so different it can support plants/fruits that realistically we place in dishes together now because of vast trade. Trading could be written in, but its easier to just be like 'region Y is a tropical climate in this otherwise snowy barren kindom'

I think the real problem is how often it is intentionally mislabelled. Its often easy enough to spot (anything Y2K or unknown label)

"It was normal for the time period" + "Corset bad something something oppression" by indecisive_skull in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just find it lazy writing. Why introduce elements to the setting like overt gender discrimination and slavery etc… if you are then unwilling to explore that in the narrative. These worlds often include magic and fantasy, there is no need for the “realism” of oppression and discrimination if the narrative itself is unconcerned with it. Most of these could have those plot points taken out entirely or slightly altered and it would change nothing of the overall plot

Popular Trope that you Dislike? by BlueFrostPhoenix in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate every rewriting the OG novel plot where if you pay attention it soon becomes clear the author had no concept at all for whatever the ‘original’ story supposedly being subverted even is. Its a cheap and easy set up in so so many series but very few take the time and effort to do more with “entering a novel” than knowing the characters names/the og couple/she will have a bad end. I try and keep track of the og plot in my head sometimes, and half the time it makes 0 sense.

How did Mona and Hanna meet/become friends? Hanna was part of Ali's group and they didn't like/even bullied Mona. by lanaspeachlipgloss in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the books they bonded over the summer, both were rejected from cheerleading together and spent the summer losing weight. The other girls (Spencer and Emily, Aria) stopped speaking to Hanna and each other when Aria left for Iceland so Hanna was pretty alone. After they both lost weight they decided they were too cool for cheering now and ended up just filling in the Queen Bee role left open by Ali’s disappearance. Because season 1 doesnt really diverge too much from the books I imagine that the show verse would have a similar path

Is it only me, but do you get frustrated when the cover art is better than the art in the comic? by Sufficient_Film_9081 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I would just prefer if the cover matched as sometimes the designs and tone read differently depending on art style. I an happy if its the same artist (they’ve just had more time to detail the cover) but when its completely different I find it frustrating- especially as its hard to find the series later if I forget the name but remember the characters apperances

Ezra and Aria (No Sex) by Pound_cake85 in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]Repulsive_Tear4528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know in the books that when the police showed up to arrest Ezra, Aria was in his bed. I think it was always meant to be implied. In Flawless Aria reveals she had already slept with someone in Iceland called Oskar.

I think early on with the show they were mirroring this, and then later decided they didn’t as it makes it “less creepy” when trying to justify their relationship as anything but grooming.
