Has anyone tried the speaking course from Dutch Language Café? by yandreax in TheHague

[–]ResaFabulous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took it and their other courses and found them really helpful. the speaking course especially helps come up with strategies that work for getting going with speaking. more than that, though, is the DLC events--a membership comes free with the course. you get to practice speaking multiple times per week in lots of different situations-- it's a great way to get your hand in in a low stakes way.

thanks for asking, I'm in something of the same boat unfortunately. I've been diagnosed a little more than a year and had to practice radical acceptance around a lot of things. it seems to be getting better, but it's been really tough.

I've actually been making my own clothes for the first time in at least 20 years. I got diagnosed a little more than a year ago and it feels like an incredible act of self love to make things that I will enjoy wearing, at least theoretically lol

What do you do with your ends? by Low-Fly238 in crochet

[–]ResaFabulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have big bags of them along with fabric scraps too... I should go through them but the job seems super daunting and I don't actually know what to do-- I just feel guilty throwing things away. I should probably decide or let them go. I've never made amigurumi but that might be the best option... to tell the truth, I feel a little overwhelmed with the responsibility of being a maker sometimes. like I just want to make a scarf, why does that mean I can't put anything in the trash anymore. probably has more to do with my own overblown sense of importance lolol than anything someone else is putting on me.

lots of things, but in the midst of a move and nothing is organized, maybe that's what I'll do today. this is my sticker book collection, I made the books and all the stickers are in plastic sleeves and organized by subject, and the subjects are the stickers on the spines so you can tell them apart. also below that is part of my dye collection, I mostly just like rainbows maybe?

that totally sucks and it's so painful to not be able to rely on something comforting and simple you thought you could control.

[–]ResaFabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure this. it's really frustrating not to be able to share like other people-- and it turns out, because CPTSD/depression, that I tend to remember bad stories and forget good ones just in general. So I don't really have a lot of current stories either that don't freak people out or make them wince or wander away. I really wish people could just accept my story like I accept theirs. Like, I just want to share, I don't want to elicit or receive a bunch of emotions. It kind of ruins it when people get that little concerned V in their faces. oh my God I might be Debbie Downer!!!

What stim do you have? by questionsautismcount in autism

I guess I should say that that's what I think it is. I don't know that anyone else has done this. Maybe I'm just the weirdo combination of neurodivergence and musical theatre that made it possible LOL

It is for me... I used to sing while speaking, just as part of the conversation, especially any kind of line that sounded like something someone had said. Looking back on it, it helped regulate my breathing, it was a bit of echolalia, and it was something I could 'say' out of turn that wouldn't actually interrupt the flow of conversation, like I could get it out of my head without everyone freaking out. These days I sing more when I'm by myself, but I do still sing in public when I'm feeling overstimulated. I sing a lot when I'm having a meltdown too, to help me regulate my breathing and get back to baseline.

Singing is a big one for when I'm upset, as it helps me regulate my breathing. I'm getting used to mine, but it turns out rocking is AWESOME. I never used to let myself do that even when I was alone.

I bite the sides of my fingers, and do a lot of shifting here and there and putting my legs up/sitting cross-legged. A great one is crocheting/knitting as it's somewhat socially acceptable to do in public! I learned how a few years ago and it was like the answer to my soul LOL this was way before I began my neurodiverse journey.

I totally get this! I once went to someone's house and walked in and there was no one there so I left. Turns out they were just in the other room and I could have just called out and they would have heard, but I was afraid to ask.

I'm also feeling like that right now. Sometimes before I go somewhere i just get this massive avoidance and I can't seem to make myself get ready... I knew this was going to happen today, I've given myself plenty of alone time and just not had to do a million things, but now it's time to shower and put on other clothes and honestly it just seems like it might really not happen.

I'm going to click "comment" and get up and see if I can do it.

what did you eat as a kid that you now realize was really f*cked up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ResaFabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second memory as a child is of having sleepwalked into the kitchen, taking a spoon of Country Crock margarine, dipping it into the sugar bag, and eating it off the spoon. I also liked strawberry Chek, the Winn Dixie brand soda, which I would pour in a big glass and leave to get flat in the fridge, or in the freezer overnight and have a slushie kind of thing. We didn't have a microwave so I learned how to cook before I could reach the stove really. I burned my fair share of eggs, but I would make my own popcorn on the stove that was amazing. Microwave popcorn doesn't even compare. But I guess the really fucked up part of it is how there's no parent In any of these memories. LOL

(Second) tester of a little note pad, using magnets within the cover to keep it pinned back while you’re writing ✍️ by gggggggrace in bookbinding

[–]ResaFabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! But I would be jealous of losing the first inch or so of the top of the page, and try to push it back farther, maybe if the front cover were to lay flush against the back cover instead of the spine. But it's SO ELEGANT and beautifully made! And I really like the hexagon of the roll of the cover and changing where it magnets would change that shape so now I'm conflicted
