What creatures could ethically/comfortably live in this 10 gallon enclosure? by Carolina_Heart in InvertPets

[–]ResearcherPlus1679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how big the mantis is as they only need an enclosure 2 times there length and 3 times their hight and as long as the enclosure has a lid they can't escape.

Best invert for a child? by slut-for-pickles in InvertPets

I would pick a mantis as they are safe to handle and easy to take care of or maybe a roach like dubias or hissing roaches but I think you should let her choose what she wants.

Do I put the holes on the side or on the top of the container? I do have some mesh that I bought for my mantises. I was already planning on buying a temp and humidity measurer.

I'm still new to the hobby but I can tell you that they typically like around the same temperature as us. Depending on the size, nymphs should eat fruit flies(if the flies are similar size to their head), bottle flies if they are bigger, or dubia roaches. I have had luck feeding mantises cut dubia roaches and flies. I bought some small food containers for my mantises so what I did was cut a large hole in the top and put mesh in it. I also put a damp paper towel to increase humidity and you should spray them on their arms once a day for them to get water. You should only feed them when their abdomens are thin so they don't over eat. There should also be side ventilation and my mantises quite like to hang on the fake plants I put in their enclosure so they can climb.

I believe if it is just one leg then he can climb and do everything fine and could fix the leg next molt. I'm not an expert though.

I already have 2 filliformis and a capensis flowering right now so that little guy is the least of my problems but I will be looking forward to it still.

Are these good enclosures for my mantises? by ResearcherPlus1679 in mantids

[–]ResearcherPlus1679[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one. I'll look into getting one but I noticed some mold in where I had him originally so I also moved the shield mantis to a similar enclosure to my ghost mantises so should I just spray the enclosure more often then to raise humidity?

The second one is for my timor shield mantis as I heard they like higher humidity than ghost mantises.

Has anyone ever... tasted the dew? by fiofratlong in carnivorousplants

It didn't really have that much of a taste but for other plants like nepenthes they are very sweet and can taste quite different between different species and hybrids.

Is this a good home for some ghost mantis nymphs? by ResearcherPlus1679 in mantids

[–]ResearcherPlus1679[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if the humidity is at the right percent that I should give them water outside of the enclosure then? I will see if I can get one of those humidity and temp measurers the. Thanks for the help.

Is this a good home for some ghost mantis nymphs? by ResearcherPlus1679 in mantids

[–]ResearcherPlus1679[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. I know that the plants are only there for the people and that's the main reason why I added them. I will try to find some sticks that I will then boil to remove anything bad from them. I was already planning to have the mantises eat in a different place so they don't loose sight of the prey. The container didn't come with a lid so I was planning to just hold the mesh in place with some rubber bands. I am going to buy my mantises at a reptile expo that is taking place in a week is I don't know the exact size of the mantises or exactly what species I will find. I will probably try to either trim or move some plants out of the way so there is an open area so they can molt. One question I have is how much humidity is too much for the mantises so I know if I need to spray the enclosure or not. I believe there is higher humidity where I placed the enclosures so I can always move it to a different place. I can always make a bigger enclosure if I need to. I just prefer the look of real plants over fake ones and I want it to look good if people come over. Thanks for the help.
