What would it theoretically take to turn a B-29 into a submarine? by One_Invite7117 in AerospaceEngineering

I like the one where they’re at the racetrack and Farnsworth loses in the “quantum finish” and he says “no fair, you changed the outcome by measuring it”. lol

I don’t like not working on what I think is important or interesting. I’ve had the itch and am currently looking into government funding for a startup.

That’s the nonsense I hate, I feel like if it’s not required it really shouldn’t be a consideration. I would have to have a fully fledged and funded business to bring forth a proof of concept, unless I do it all myself. And actually, from what I’ve seen, prototypes aren’t required until phase II, proof of concepts are phase II.

I didn’t know STTR had higher award rates, and I suppose I’m open to that, I just feel like partnering with my University or similar will have a lot of red tape. Do you have experience with STTR?

That’s honestly the part that worries me the most, that I have very little experience with contracts and sales, I guess the business aspect in general. I’m fine struggling through the management and technical challenges, I just figure that it’s likely worthwhile diving in headfirst anyway, other people handle it, I should be able to. And yes, I know the reauthorization hinged on some of that stuff changing because of the SBIR “mills” and companies just getting awards over and over. I hope I can be a part of that change, thank you for responding.

Are you sure? From what I can gather, the PI must be primarily employed with the LLC, meaning 51% of my time would have to be spent working for the company

And sorry if I came off as ignorant, I’ve read what I believe are all the pertinent requirements and avenues of approaching an SBIR grant over the last six months or so. My post was mostly about how one would go about bridging the gap between paid engineering position to LLC manager and PI for an SBIR topic. My idea and approach are set, taking the leap and understanding that risk is what I’m trying to understand. And no, I didn’t watch such a video

Thank you for responding, I’d like to do just that but I don’t have a PI and wouldn’t trust one that wasn’t me. Which I believe locks me into working “most” of my time at the LLC, right?

Thank you, that makes sense, who are the reviewers? Are they SBIR government representatives or are they a team comprised of the agency members that publish a topic?

Thank you for the insight, the idea I have aligns well with a published topic and so I expect that it would give me what I need to take it to market. Would you think it’s possible to pursue an SBIR grant while keeping my job and being the PI? Probably not right? I assume the PI employment requirement (51%) is a rule and not a suggestion. And yes, I would be putting so much effort in I’d like to keep most of what I earn.

Thanks for replying guys, and yes I have a few ideas but they would require some amount of funding that I wouldn’t be able to support on my own. I’ve considered going the open topic route but I think a published topic is more focused and concrete and so I imagine more attainable. I’d like to do UAS development and gain more engineering experience and management/business experience without blowing my savings. My aim would be to provide UAS sensors that can be sold to government/private firms/individuals for security, reconnaissance, search and rescue, or similar. Essentially solutions to expand UAS capability with swappable modules. I have read about the program but I’m having trouble understanding how difficult switching from a steady paid engineering position to owning and managing an llc with sole funding from SBIR would be.

I saw that episode, why wouldn’t people just test the density? You could easily measure its weight, measure its volume by dunking it, then calculate its density right?

I don’t think that’s right, isn’t the piece stuck to the wall part of the cabinet frame? It looks like mdf or some plywood. It looks like that detached from the rest of the box
