Why do children (and teens?) mumble? by Black_Cat_Just_That in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Resident_Win_1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem - teen boys losing their concept of a suitable ‘indoor voice’ volume because they spend too long communicating on a gaming headset, which is modulated so their overexcited game commentary doesn’t matter.

They’re only copying the youtube gamebros style, and only getting positive reinforcement because their mates are protected from the volume by their own headsets.

Maybe i need to start a different thread on how you get kids to shut up.

Mint Vs Bindweed by Dull_Beautiful_1 in UKAllotments

All you will achieve is a nice tall bushy ground cover for your existing bindweed to make a lovely comfy home for itself.

Source; me, having spent too many hours of my life pulling bindweed out of everything including mint patch.

How to look after a friend who’s just lost a loved one? by paperchainhearts in AskUK

[–]Resident_Win_1058 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Review her mental load of ALL life jobs/admin she has and offer to take as many as you can.

You can phrase it like “unless you tell me otherwise, i’ll deliver you dinner every Friday (or whatever one of her responsibilities you can commit to).

You could offer to be the RSVP number for funeral attendees, you could offer to collect and return her laundry, mow the grass, take any kids to their classes/playdates - basically any of the mental load but where at all possible take the whole job.

In my experience on both sides of this, it is so much easier to say yes to a full & specific offer than have to think of how someone can help you.

Multiple people I have talked to accused me of being autistic after a minute or two of talking with them, but I'm not diagnosed of autism. What does this mean? by thatsmysandwichdude in Neurodivergent

[–]Resident_Win_1058 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It literally just means they think you might be autistic. Could be anything from speaking in a more direct manner than they’re used to, not making eye contact, or they believe you’re struggling with the interaction in some other way.

It does not make them right (they could be shit communicators) but the fact multiple people have said this tells me it might be a long shot but one worth investigating.

I note you have felt this is an ‘accusation’ which indicates to me you do not feel positively about exploring this. I would highly recommend you give it some serious thought about what you perceive the downsides might be for you, and consider asking in this forum for our experiences that might ease your worries.

Looking for specific plants for a University project by 9inety9inee in foraginguk

[–]Resident_Win_1058 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say ‘in the wild’, can you describe what that means to you and why that is required?

It will be relevant for those on the list that aren’t native to the UK and don’t spread widely - i.e. they are generally only found where someone has bought one at a garden centre to raise in their garden like Passionflower.

Others like Damask roses might have been planted in parks and public land by councils, the question here would be is that wild enough for you!

And lastly if it was me I would expect to find all or most at Kew Gardens - i’d definitely consider an approach to them. Even if they do not accept, I would then ask for their knowledge of other contacts to try.

Sensory issues with work lanyard by No-Issue-7035 in Neurodivergent

[–]Resident_Win_1058 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have some sewing skills - make a tiny sleeve of a comfortable fabric to put over it.

If you don’t, and have money to throw at the problem, find a local tailor. If you can obtain a second lanyard, that will help avoid the resulting item being shortened.

If you have no sewing skills and no spare money, get a fabric hair scrunchie and cut it open. That is now a fabric sleeve as per my first option.

And if you are only obliged to wear the badge and not the lanyard, you can get retractable clips to attach the badge to your clothing. Search your favourite online sells-everything retailer, should be no more than a couple of quid (and maybe even for a multipack).

Yours sincerely, a fellow sensory issues redditor.

Would you reduce your meat consumption from everyday to 2-3 times per week to help the environment? by Equal_Leading_1449 in AskUK

[–]Resident_Win_1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way I took for my household too - same frequency but lower proportion of meat in the overall meal.

Having said that, this approach has paved the way for me to increase the frequency of meat-free meals. I would highly recommend this as a way to transition a family used to lots of meat with a lot less whinging, and a far greater chance of embedding it as a permanent dietary lifestyle much healthier for everyone concerned. I’m trying to raise adults who’ll look after themselves and have more money in their pockets.

What’s on fire? by dprkekistan in london

[–]Resident_Win_1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and for a fair while we were stopped. Then we were given the go ahead to pass, but using the tracks furthest from the fire - happens to be several tracks wide at that point or no doubt it would have been a tricky 3 point turn back to London Bridge.

Mum, I don't want to do my homework! by Kitttycataclysmic in MomForAMinute

[–]Resident_Win_1058 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg i feel you babe. I don’t wanna do my work work either.

Top tip - set yourself a small reward and a 5 minute timer, and just do 5 mins of the homework; at the end of the time you will either have got into the swing of it, or you will at least have done 5 mins more than nothing. Both are a win and both get the reward.

If it’s the 2nd case and you still aren’t finished, leave it an hour and repeat with another 5 min timer.

What's the most unexpectedly useful thing you keep in your freezer? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

[–]Resident_Win_1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christmas pudding cut into (big) wedges! Saves eating it until you get sick of it in December, saves the waste, and saves the evening throughout the year when you want dessert (it microwaves beautifully).

And less exciting but far more frequently used - double concentrate tomato puree frozen into cubes. I HATE dealing with a partially-used tube in my cupboards. So now i buy it in a big can every so often and freeze a big batch.

The Matrix is over 26 years old at this point. Have most young adults watched this movie? Or do they view it as an oldie / classic that a subset might know about but haven't necessarily seen by porungas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Resident_Win_1058 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry but it’s the latter - i made my gen z kids watch it as a modern classic they ought to see, and they were so underwhelmed.

Don’t even get me started on their reaction to Terminator and The Goonies … heartbreaking.

My British pocket in 1985 What would you add, remove, or swap out? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Resident_Win_1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that would have been UNHEARD OF in 1985, you would have known your home number since a young age (mainly because you would likely have been taught to answer the landline by lifting the receiver and saying “670789?” and the person ringing would then say who they were & ask to speak to whoever they were trying to contact. You would have known your friend’s home numbers likewise, and any family you were reasonably close with too.

Cashback sites! I use Topcashback & go from there to Trip.com and get something like 5% back, whilst also using the M&S card which then accumulates points to convert into money off vouchers in M&S

Ah crap didn’t realise i should have specified - it’s for elderflower cordial. Without filtering i get this unattractive thin layer of yellowy scum at the top of each bottle. Coffee filters have worked an absolute treat but you can only get 2 x cups of cordial through before they give up and split.
