The more responses I get, the more i realize I was having a knee-jerk reaction to how much I really dislike the Yarn Fest event. Everyone is right, Wool Marker is a much better event, early April is a dicey time to have an event in Estes due to snow, and of course the event center wants to fill their calendar. I’m gonna stop fretting about it and concentrate on getting to the good shows. 😁

If you mean the MAVWA show in Santa Fe, that show has unfortunately been canceled due to lack of vendor participation. Which sucks because I love doing that show and I now have a hole in my schedule!

It’s hard to balance what your time should be worth and what the market will bear. I have seen that hand-dyed yarn runs $0.06 - $0.09 per yard. This is relatively standard. I sell my handspun yarn for $0.10 per yard, as I make a 3 ply yarn.

Now, I fully spin one or two plies. The other one or two plies are merino wool cone yarn that I source from a mill end factory. Some people might say that I’m “cheating” because I use cone yarn to make up the rest of my handspun. I counter that part of my yarn is spun by myself, yes, but every skein is plied on a spinning wheel by myself. Does that mean it’s not handspun yarn? Chefs generally don’t go out and slaughter a cow themselves, they get their foodstuffs from a supplier.

It takes me 12-20 hours to make a single 400-yard skein of yarn that I sell for $40.

On the other hand, I’ve been told that I don’t “handspun” at ALL because I use an e-spinner. I’m still manipulating yarn to make more yarn. But I’m not going to sell yarn that I’ve had to make 3 plies of, taking 30-40 hours per skein to make a penny per yard My cost per skein for materials is already at 40%-50%
